A view of the past, a glimpse of the future.
Beijing<br />
One of the worlds greatest cities, Beijing serves as the<br />
capital for the peoples republic of China and is<br />
known for its opulent palaces, temples and huge<br />
stone walls and gates.<br />
This photo journal documents the progression<br />
through China from West to East and from<br />
Confucianism to Taoism.<br />
The photos enclosed capture the rich tradition and<br />
history of the chinese people, the governance of china<br />
and the cultural and archite<strong>ct</strong>ural relics that span<br />
nearly 600 years.<br />
From Beijing’s Forbidden City of the Ming and Qing<br />
dynasties, to the modern reformation of Shanghai in<br />
the 1990’s and the development of Pudong into the<br />
major economic and archite<strong>ct</strong>ural center it is today.

The square lies between two ancient, massive gates: the Tian’anmen to the north and the Qianmen to the<br />

The Palace of Heavenly Purity<br />
The palace of heavenly purity is the largest of the three halls in the inner court at the northern end of the<br />
city and was the residence of the emperor during the Ming dynasty.
Details of mortise & tenon constru<strong>ct</strong>ion, the traditional chinese archite<strong>ct</strong>ure of articulation and bilateral<br />
symmetry, the use of cardinal dire<strong>ct</strong>ions, numbers and certain colors which refle<strong>ct</strong> a belief in a type<br />
immanence, where the nature of a thing could be wholly contained in its own form.

at left) on occasion a modern building (such as the CCTV at right) has a chance to dominate the skyline.

Built in 514 BCE Suzhou is well known for its many<br />
gardens and canals such as the grand canal which<br />
stretches from Beijing to Hangzhou and is the longest<br />
artificial river in the world.
