<strong>Learner</strong> <strong>Approved</strong> <strong>Motorcycle</strong> Scheme (<strong>LAMS</strong>)<br />
There are two categories of <strong>LAMS</strong> motorcycles: <strong>LAMS</strong>-approved and <strong>LAMS</strong>-prohibited motorcycles.<br />
<strong>LAMS</strong>-approved motorcycles are determined by two factors:<br />
• a maximum power-to-weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne (the power is that specified by the<br />
manufacturer and the weight is the weight specified by the manufacturer plus 90kgs for the rider and<br />
riding gear); and<br />
• an upper engine capacity limit of 660cc.<br />
<strong>Motorcycle</strong>s and scooters with an engine capacity of 250cc or under will automatically be <strong>LAMS</strong>-approved,<br />
with the exception of a small group of 250cc motorcycles that will not be <strong>LAMS</strong>-approved for learner and<br />
restricted riders after 01 October 2012 due to their high performance capabilities.<br />
<strong>Learner</strong> or restricted licence holders who currently ride one of these 250cc motorcycles will have the<br />
option to apply to the <strong>NZ</strong>TA for an exemption, which may enable them to continue to legally ride this<br />
vehicle after 1 October 2012.<br />
Please note<br />
Any motorcycle modified in a way that increases its power-to-weight ratio is no longer <strong>LAMS</strong>-compliant,<br />
regardless of whether it appears on the list. Failure to comply with the new rules may result in fines and<br />
demerit points.<br />

<strong>LAMS</strong>- approved motorcycles list (between 251cc and 660cc)<br />
<strong>LAMS</strong>-approved motorcycles include:<br />
• All motorcycles with engine capacities of 250cc and under, except for those on the <strong>LAMS</strong>prohibited<br />
list above.<br />
• Fully electric powered motorcycles with a power-to-weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne<br />
and under (this includes all fully electric powered motorcycles registered on New Zealand's<br />
Motor Vehicle Register as of 1 June 2012).<br />
• All motorcycles manufactured prior to 1960 with an engine capacity of 660cc and under.<br />
• The following list of motorcycles with engine capacities between 251cc and 660cc - these<br />
motorcycles must be in standard form as produced by the manufacturer. They cannot be<br />
modified in any way to increase the power-to-weight ratio.<br />
Please note: The following list currently displays the more current models available in the<br />
New Zealand market. It will be updated as other models, both old and new, are approved by<br />
the <strong>NZ</strong> <strong>Transport</strong> <strong>Agency</strong>.<br />
Please ensure you pay close attention the degree of specification in the list - for example, a<br />
Suzuki GSX650FU model is specified in the list, therefore is a <strong>LAMS</strong>-approved motorcycle. A<br />
Suzuki GSX650F is not on the list and is therefore not <strong>LAMS</strong>-approved.<br />
