Sister Kathleen Klarich, Principal, reports year-end accomplishments The Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools visited Little Flower from March 9 through 12. This state required process is necessary every seven years to renew accreditation and educational certification. We are pleased to report that the oral report recommended reaccreditation. It was very positive and highlighted our spirited community and family atmosphere. The written report which will follow will contain recommendations and commendations. The team gave approval to the newly identified Student Performance Objectives and Action Plans. They include: 1. improved confidence and competence in numeracy 2. develop ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate results of their use of in-depth research skills in both written and oral presentations 3. develop life-skills in finance, banking, credit cards, budgets, taxes, study and test-taking skills, time management, household management, car maintenance, cooking, conflict resolution, social etiquette, job interviews. Academics: Our graduating class of 155 has received scholarships worth over $7,134,452. Over 37% of our graduates received scholarship money; 90% of our graduates are pursuing post-secondary education. VIP (Very Impressive Performers Program), a new program in Philadelphia initiated by Mayor Nutter, offers various challenges quarterly to all students in Philadelphia schools, both public and private. Recognition and prizes are awarded. There were 500 elementary and secondary students who achieved “Excellence.” Little Flower is proud of our 13 students who achieved that level. That is 2.5% of the entire group of achievers throughout the city came from LF! The students won a ticket to a Phillies game for the Mayor’s Box. Congratulations to all of our Excellent Students! Third Quarter: Most Improved in attendance, discipline and grades: These students will be nominated by their teachers. Honors Night was held on May 6, and 150 students who received 1st Honors and 181 students who received 2nd Honors through the first three quarters of the school year were invited along with their parents. Little Flower is proud to announce that it will be offering two sections of Chinese as a language offering starting in the fall. Athletics: LF has won the Catholic League Bowling Championship for the third year straight. We also have students who have achieved All Catholic status in soccer, field hockey, bowling, swimming, basketball and volleyball. Our spring sports: lacrosse, softball, and track and field wrapped up a good year, and our track and field team participated in the Penn Relays. Congratulations to all our athletes! Arts: Our talented young women have performed in our Spring Concert and our artists have showcased their projects at our annual Art Exhibit. We are very proud of our creative and artistic students. Father Joseph McCaffrey, School Minister, shares the spirituality and service activities for the year Liturgy and Prayer: The 70th Anniversary Mass for our students was celebrated on Monday, September 14. The opening included a procession of all of our LF students, in alphabetical order, into the building. This symbolic event was a reenactment of the Little Flower’s original opening day in September 1939. The students were quite moved by the significance of the procession. Our annual St. Therese Feast Day Mass was celebrated on October 1 by Bishop McFadden. Our Annual Mass of Thanksgiving was held at the Carmelite Monastery on Old York Road on April 13. The Mass was attended by faculty, administration, students and alumnae. Our Choral ensemble led us in song. The faculty and administration updated our Mission and Belief Statements in preparation for the Middle States Evaluation team visit. These were blessed at our annual Thanksgiving Liturgy and placed in all classrooms and offices. Morning Mass is held each school day and Eucharistic prayer services are celebrated daily at the beginning of each lunch period. The Blessed Sacrament is exposed every Friday. The Sacrament of Penance was offered daily on a rotating schedule. Penance Services were held for two days during the Advent and Lenten Season. Many priests from neighboring parishes generously participated. Stations of the Cross were conducted with the entire school community during Holy Week. A Marian Prayer Service with the Crowning of Mary was celebrated on May 20. Students who participate in the Marian Prayer Service are nominated by the faculty because of their consistent presentation of qualities that are associated with Our Lady. LF Retreat Programs provide a valuable opportunity for personal growth. The Senior Retreat theme was “Leaving footprints on your heart.” The students were asked to reflect on where they have left their footprints in our community and to appreciate the people who have left footprints on their hearts. Save the Date Installation Classes of 1950, 1960, and 1985 Mark your calendars for Annual Installation of Student Government Officers and Club Presidents on Friday, September 24. Individual invitations to this Homecoming will be sent in August. The Junior Retreat was held at St. Bartholomew Parish, and the theme was vocations. The retreat project featured a wooden cross and a wooden heart. The students were asked to join their heart to the heart of Jesus and the forgiveness of the Father’s love and to reflect on the virtues they hold in their hearts. The Sophomore and Freshman Retreat was held at school. The theme was nurturing a relationship with our Patroness, St. Therese. The students participated in a variety of activities that deepened their understanding of St. Therese. A guest speaker who volunteered for a year of service in South Africa spoke about her experiences and deepened the students’ appreciation of St. Therese as co-patron of the Universal Missions. The Community Service Corps (CSC) conducted a great variety of service activities. A ‘Hearts for Haiti’ campaign worked with Catholic Relief Services to provide for earthquake relief in Haiti. The ‘Give a Goat’ campaign ran in April. It collected funds that would purchase goats for families in developing countries. Our original goal was to purchase four goats, but enough money was raised for six goats to be purchased. March Madness activities collected baby necessities: formula, diapers, blankets and clothing. The May ‘Queens of Clean’ campaign collected toiletry items for local shelters. CSC Earth Day Clean-Ups in Hunting Park were held in September and April. Other events benefited Alex’s Lemonade Stand and St. Francis Inn. Our CSC moderator and Librarian, Ms. Brooke Hauer, was honored by the Archdiocese at the annual CSC Commissioning Mass for her innovative and creative service programs and opportunities. Members of the Junior Class met with Cardinal Rigali and vocation directors in January that focused on religious life and the role of women in the Church. Guidance Department By Ms. Marla Stalone On, March 19th, Career Day was held at Little Flower for all Freshmen and Sophomore students. During homeroom period the entire school gathered to hear Sister Mary Scullion speak about her effort to help the homeless through Project H.O.M.E. Students then attended two presentations of their choice. We offered a wide variety of careers to the students so that they could explore their interests. We are grateful for alumnae Wendy Moore McNicholas ’91, Sue New Galiczynski ’84, Carolyn Stankiewicz ’68, along with LF faculty member, Sharon Corwall, for speaking to the students.
