Volume 67 No. 2 Summer 2010
In the early 1990s, when I
learned that my dear Alma Mater,
Little Flower Catholic High
School for Girls, was in danger
of closing, I decided it was time
for me to get involved. I had always been so proud to say,
"I went to Little Flower," and I was grateful for the education
I received there; however, that was no longer enough. I
knew I needed to be a part of the future of the school. I
began to give to the Annual Fund. Yet I felt there must be
something else I could do. That was when I decided to put
Little Flower in my Will.
Just to go back a little to my days at Little Flower, I
must confess that I tried to take the easy way out in selecting
courses for my Junior and Senior years. But, thankfully,
the dedication, discipline and determination of the sisters at
Little Flower prevented that from happening.
I clearly remember the first day of my Junior year. I was
shocked to see my roster. It did not resemble anything I had
chosen. I was given Latin, Spanish, Stenography, Typing,
and so much more. I immediately went to see Sister Mary
Daniel and explained that there must have been an error.
She checked her file and said, "Be on your way, young
lady... there is no error. They are your courses!" Thank God,
and thank you, Sister Mary Daniel! She saw my potential
long before I did.
Arlene Liberatore Petruzzo
Class of 1958
I did not have the opportunity to
continue my education due to family responsibilities.
It was necessary for me to start work full time
immediately after graduation. Fortunately I was able to
secure good secretarial positions due to my excellent steno
and typing skills that I developed at Little Flower.
As the years went by, I was able to move forward
because of my solid academic background, my business
skills and the work ethic I developed at LF. I had a very successful
career in marketing. I retired from the Sun Oil
Company after twenty-five wonderful years.
I know that my accomplishments in the corporate world
were due to the outstanding education I received at Little
Flower. My mother sacrificed so much so that I could have
this advantage going out into the world. Now it is my turn
to give back.
In today’s economy, our Catholic families are challenged
financially to provide their daughters with the very
best education. They want their daughters to have the
opportunity for academic challenge, leadership, and talent
development in a caring and safe environment. Little
Flower continues to offer this opportunity thanks to the generosity
of its alumnae. LF needs to be here in the future. It
gives me great satisfaction to know that by including LF in
my will, the LF students of tomorrow will take their places
in society, as I did, as well prepared citizens.
Dear Alumnae and Friends:
Blessings! Another fantastic
school year is completed and our
70th Anniversary Class, the Class
of 2010 now joins our 34,000+
proud graduates of Little Flower
Catholic High School for Girls.
During the Baccalaureate Mass
held at the Cathedral and the
Commencement exercises which
occurred at Holy Family
University, I ALWAYS pray for our
living and deceased graduates of
this wonderful school. I am very
mindful of all that we owe you for your financial support
which sustains our special mission of Catholic education here
at Little Flower.
I would like to take this opportunity now to thank you for
your generous response to the address label mailing—(I can’t
wait until September when the Donor Report is mailed to give
you the good news!) You sent over 1,100 gifts, most were
SECOND gifts, to help us reach our budget goal. With two
weeks left in this fiscal year and $8,000 yet needed, I am confident
that we will do it. You are amazing! God bless your
generous hearts and your willingness to help this generation
because of what you received as a student!
Our students accomplished many wonderful things during
this school year and were involved in so many worthwhile
activities. Please take the time to read what our principal,
Sister Kathleen Klarich, RSM and our school minister, Father
Joseph McCaffrey included on pages 6-7.
Since most of our Alumnae live in the state of PA, I hope
you do not mind if I use this newsletter as a means to communicate
to the PA residents a way they can become active in
contacting their representatives regarding pressing issues that
affect the parochial schools. Please visit the website:
ADVANCEMENT NOTES . . .
Sister
Joan M. Ames, IHM
Director of Advancement
Dear Alumnae and Friends
of Little Flower:
Were does the time go? Seems
like yesterday we were making
plans for the 70th Anniversary celebration,
and just last week we
closed our celebration year with a
beautiful Mass in the auditorium.
Our 155 graduates of 2010, our
70th graduating class, were inducted
into the Little Flower Alumnae
Association on June 7th, following
our Closing Liturgy.
Once again, we offered the gradu-
ating class the opportunity to support Little Flower during
their college years through the Senior Pledge Program. At
Another topic near and dear to my heart is in reference to
the EITC funding. (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) It is
very frustrating to hear that the public schools are expecting
an increase in public spending while the EITC program could
be reduced another 10 million for next year’s budget. Little
Flower students already receive over $100,000 in tuition
assistance through the EITC program. That is money I do
not have to raise through the Annual Fund, so you can see
how important this funding is to us. Please visit:
www.operationrestorepa.org.
If you, a family member or friend owns a business, instead
of paying taxes to the government, you can receive TAX
CREDIT, if you designate monies to a scholarship organization.
I will be happy to explain this in greater detail. Trust me,
it is a “win-win” situation.
At this time, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude
to Mary Anne Greene Jackson, ’65 for her outstanding work
as a volunteer Director of Marketing and Planned Giving.
Mary Anne approached these two areas as if they were her
full-time positions. Anyone who knows Mary Anne will agree
that she throws herself into a project wholeheartedly and gives
150% of herself. Because she is an Alumna of Little Flower,
she also brought her passion and love for LF to each project.
I personally have learned a lot from Mary Anne’s experience
in the corporate world and will miss her. Thank you so much,
Mary Anne!
God bless you! I hope you are able to take a little time during
the next weeks for some relaxation and fun! Have a safe
and happy summer! Your intentions are always lifted up in my
daily prayers …
Fondly,
Sister Donna Shallo, IHM
President
the Senior Pledge Assembly on May 17th the Class of ’10
pledged $20.10, for the next four years. The Class of 2010
joins the College Age Classes of 2007, 2008 and 2009 that are
supporting Little Flower through the Senior Pledge
Program. Thank you, girls for your support!
A huge “thank you” to our alumnae, parents, grandparents
and friends, who so enthusiastically supported Little Flower
this year. We know the adverse effects of our economy on so
many of you, and yet you continue to remember Little Flower
in your charitable giving. We are deeply touched! So many
Little Flower students are benefitting from your tremendous
generosity. We are very grateful to our many first-time
donors; to those who have increased their gift; to the many
who designated Memorial Donations to Little Flower; and to
those who doubled their gift through Matching Funds or
second gifts.
OFFICE OF PLANNED GIVING
Mary Anne Greene
Jackson ’65
Dear Fellow Alumnae:
Again, the school year at Little
Flower comes quickly to a close.
Seniors fly through their day, focused
on final exams, Baccalaureate Mass,
and graduation. Before they plunge
into their new lives, they complete
many “lasts”— last community project,
last special liturgy, last class, and
last bus ride home. They now appreciate
what they have been through
academically, emotionally, and spiritually
over the last four years. There
are also lots of hugs, tears, and plenty of Thank You's. The
graduates are very much aware of what their parents and our
committed alumnae have done financially to get them
through. They will be forever grateful.
The Little Flower Legacy Society members make sure this
familiar scene will play out over and over for years to come.
We have included Little Flower in our Will. The LF dream is
there for our students of the future. Because we have stepped
forward and notified Little Flower of our thoughtful planned
gifts, the school can plan long-range with confidence, so necessary
for the continued success of our Alma Mater.
For many of you who are considering including Little
Flower in your Will, think of a planned gift as ‘paying it forward’
for young women yet to come. Please take time to go to
the Planned Giving section on the Little Flower website.
There is a wealth of information available for you and your
attorney or financial advisor.
Dear Alumnae:
We have several fun events planned
for the fall.
Summer Fest, Saturday, August 14
Westy’s Irish Pub in North Wildwood
5:00 to 9:00 pm $25.00 in advance,
$30.00 at the door. Please note the
change in time from previous years.
This allows for a beach day for those
interested, and it also gives those driving
down the opportunity to avoid the
early Saturday morning traffic. We
hope this new time gives everyone more flexibility in planning
a great LF day with friends and family.
The Annual Communion Mass and Luncheon
Sunday, November 7, 2010 at St. Peter’s Church in
Merchantville, NJ. Lunch following at the Pennsauken
Country Club
3-day Bus Trip to Salem, Massachusetts
October 21, 22, and 23, 2010. We’re hoping for a big success
with this road trip, our first overnighter ever. If it is success-
We honored our Legacy Society members at our third
annual Prayer Service and Brunch on May 11 and we were
thrilled to welcome 17 new alumnae with a special gift. This
celebration has been very well received; and our members
look forward to spending some time with each other, hearing
what’s new at Little Flower, and touring this great building.
We would love to welcome you next spring.
On a personal note, I am completing my third year as
Director of Planned Giving and will “retire” in June. It has
truly been an honor to have worked as a volunteer with Sister
Donna in this capacity. Meeting committed alumnae from different
eras has been so rewarding. We share a common love
and a loyalty to Little Flower. Also, I have come to experience
first hand the amazing energy and caring spirit of our young
women students.
My husband, Charlie, and I look forward to travelling, and
in particular, spending lots more time with our three great kids,
our four beautiful grandchildren; and we eagerly await the
arrival of twin granddaughters in the fall! I am very blessed.
May St. Therese continue to watch over the entire Little
Flower community as they go about living their sacred mission.
Thank you.
Warmest personal regards,
ful, we’ll consider others. The first bus is almost full.
However, a second bus can be scheduled if needed.
The Annual Christmas Luncheon
Saturday, December 11, 2010 at the Rosewood Caterers. This
has become an annual event for so many of our alumnae and
they look forward to attending.
Please see the full announcements and Information for
these events inside this Sequel.
You, our great Alumnae, know that Little Flower is alive
and well today because of your constant loyalty and support.
No one forgets her great time and all of her great memories
here at Little Flower. The generosity of so many of you to your
Alma Mater has allowed for so many scholarships and tuition
grants for our students. With you, the legacy of Little Flower
continues to live on in each and every student and each and
every Alumna who went before.
On a different note, we are all saddened by the closure of
both Northeast Catholic High School for Boys and Cardinal
Dougherty High School. Our Alumnae have so many fond
memories of all the great times at both schools. Little Flower
Alumnae Association wishes everyone involved at North and
Dougherty the very best.
Father Joseph McCaffrey, School Minister, shares the spirituality
and service activities for the year
Liturgy and Prayer: The 70th Anniversary Mass for our students
was celebrated on Monday, September 14. The opening
included a procession of all of our LF students, in alphabetical
order, into the building. This symbolic event was a reenactment
of the Little Flower’s original opening day in
September 1939. The students were quite moved by the significance
of the procession.
Our annual St. Therese Feast Day Mass was celebrated on
October 1 by Bishop McFadden.
Our Annual Mass of Thanksgiving was held at the
Carmelite Monastery on Old York Road on April 13. The
Mass was attended by faculty, administration, students and
alumnae. Our Choral ensemble led us in song.
The faculty and administration updated our Mission and
Belief Statements in preparation for the Middle States
Evaluation team visit. These were blessed at our annual
Thanksgiving Liturgy and placed in all classrooms and
offices.
Morning Mass is held each school day and Eucharistic
prayer services are celebrated daily at the beginning of each
lunch period. The Blessed Sacrament is exposed every Friday.
The Sacrament of Penance was offered daily on a rotating
schedule. Penance Services were held for two days during the
Advent and Lenten Season. Many priests from neighboring
parishes generously participated. Stations of the Cross were
conducted with the entire school community during Holy
Week. A Marian Prayer Service with the Crowning of Mary
was celebrated on May 20. Students who participate in the
Marian Prayer Service are nominated by the faculty because
of their consistent presentation of qualities that are associated
with Our Lady.
LF Retreat Programs provide a valuable opportunity for
personal growth. The Senior Retreat theme was “Leaving
footprints on your heart.” The students were asked to reflect
on where they have left their footprints in our community and
to appreciate the people who have left footprints on their
hearts.
Installation
Classes of 1950, 1960, and 1985
Mark your calendars for Annual
Installation of Student Government
Officers and Club Presidents on Friday,
September 24.
Individual invitations to this Homecoming
will be sent in August.
The Junior Retreat was held at St. Bartholomew Parish,
and the theme was vocations. The retreat project featured a
wooden cross and a wooden heart. The students were asked to
join their heart to the heart of Jesus and the forgiveness of the
Father’s love and to reflect on the virtues they hold in their
hearts.
The Sophomore and Freshman Retreat was held at
school. The theme was nurturing a relationship with our
Patroness, St. Therese. The students participated in a variety
of activities that deepened their understanding of St. Therese.
A guest speaker who volunteered for a year of service in South
Africa spoke about her experiences and deepened the students’
appreciation of St. Therese as co-patron of the
Universal Missions.
The Community Service Corps (CSC) conducted a great
variety of service activities. A ‘Hearts for Haiti’ campaign
worked with Catholic Relief Services to provide for earthquake
relief in Haiti. The ‘Give a Goat’ campaign ran in April.
It collected funds that would purchase goats for families in
developing countries. Our original goal was to purchase four
goats, but enough money was raised for six goats to be purchased.
March Madness activities collected baby necessities:
formula, diapers, blankets and clothing. The May ‘Queens of
Clean’ campaign collected toiletry items for local shelters.
CSC Earth Day Clean-Ups in Hunting Park were held in
September and April. Other events benefited Alex’s
Lemonade Stand and St. Francis Inn.
Our CSC moderator and Librarian, Ms. Brooke Hauer, was
honored by the Archdiocese at the annual CSC
Commissioning Mass for her innovative and creative service
programs and opportunities.
Members of the Junior Class met with Cardinal Rigali and
vocation directors in January that focused on religious life and
the role of women in the Church.
On, March 19th, Career Day was held at Little Flower for
all Freshmen and Sophomore students. During homeroom
period the entire school gathered to hear Sister Mary Scullion
speak about her effort to help the homeless through Project
H.O.M.E.
Students then attended two presentations of their choice.
We offered a wide variety of careers to the students so that
they could explore their interests. We are grateful for alumnae
Wendy Moore McNicholas ’91, Sue New Galiczynski ’84,
Carolyn Stankiewicz ’68, along with LF faculty member,
Sharon Corwall, for speaking to the students. If you are interested
in volunteering to speak at our next Career Day, please
e-mail Sister Donna at: lfpres930@hotmail.com.
In other news, we are extremely proud of the class of
2010, who have been admitted to top universities and attained
scholarships totaling $7,134,452 at the time this was written.
Little Flower Students
Organize a
“Hair-Raiser”
For Cancer Patients
Touched by the cancer deaths of people close
to them, two seniors, Lindsey Holmes, (second
row, last person) and Erin Ondrejka (Third row,
second from left) organized a hair donation campaign
to provide wigs for cancer patients in treatment.
Pictured with their ponytailed and packaged
locks in plastic bags are their supportive classmates
who also “snipped away.”
“The whole things started because we both
were going to cut our hair,” Ondrejka said. “It’s
kind of the thing to do. Everyone lets her hair
grow and then cuts it off after the prom.” “There
is no point in cutting it and just throwing it away
if you can cut your hair and give it to people who
would really appreciate it,” Ondrejka said.
With the help of Community Service Corps
moderator, Brooke Hauer, the school librarian, the
duo organized a two-week drive after the Senior
Prom and encouraged other Little Flower girls to
donate their shorn hair to Pantene Beautiful
Lengths. The hair will be made into wigs for
women who suffer hair loss as a result of cancer
treatments. According to Pantene Beautiful
Lengths, it takes at least six ponytails of eight
inches to make one wig.
Once again, Little Flower students demonstrated
their generosity. More than 190 inches of
hair was collected and it surpassed Erin and
Lindsey’s goal of 165 inches.
