UNC Professor
Appointed to FDA
Risk Communication
Advisory Committee
Utilizing her more than 15 years of experience in studying
communication between healthcare providers and patients, Dr.
Betsy Sleath, associate professor at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has been
appointed to serve on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
Risk Communication Advisory Committee. The group provides
advice to the FDA about how best to communicate to the public
the risks and benefits of FDA-regulated products to ensure their
optimal use.
The 2006 report “The Future of Drug Safety: Promoting and
Protecting the Health of the Public” issued by the Institute of
Medicine (IOM) called for the development a cohesive risk communication
plan. Comprised of 15 voting members that represent
independent experts and public members, the committee's
responsibilities include helping the FDA better understand
the public’s communication needs and priorities; advising the
agency on the development of strategic plans to communicate
product risks and benefits; and making recommendations,
based on current research, on how to craft and deliver risk-andbenefit
messages to audiences.
The committee’s first agenda topic was addressing ways in
which the agency can better communicate information to the
public about product recalls. They looked at a sample FDAissued
press release, for example, and discussed ways to make
the release more understandable for consumers. Should the
agency use a template? Will the message be distributed in multiple
languages? These questions and more were discussed by
the committee, which then makes recommendations to the FDA
on its findings.
Sleath says the broad range in experts’ backgrounds provides
a necessary diversity of knowledge and opinions. Her own
background includes studies of rheumatologist-patient communication
as well as studies of communication at pediatric asthma
clinics and how this impacts the child’s adherence to his/her
medications.
