Appointments
• Akash Alexander will join the
faculty in the department of pharmacy
in fall 2008 as an assistant
professor.
• Gretchen M. Brophy has been
appointed to the Distinguished
Investigator Committee (2008
–2011) of the American College
of Critical Care Medicine and has
also been appointed to the Neurocritical
Care Society Clinical
Guidelines Steering Committee
(2008).
• Bonny L. Bukaveckas has been
appointed to serve on the National
Advisory Council for Intermountain
Healthcare Clinical
Genetics Institute.
• Annie Cheang was appointed to
the American College of Clinical
Pharmacy Research Institute as
an ad hoc grant reviewer to serve
a three-year term.
• Leticia “Tish” Moczygemba will
join the VCU faculty in the Department
of Pharmacy in summer
2008 as an assistant professor.
• Evan Sisson was appointed to
chair the Strategic Planning and
Development Committee of the
American Association of Diabetes
Educators Board of Directors.
• Patty Slattum was appointed to
the editorial board of Clinical

• Benjamin van Tassell will join
the faculty in the Department of
Pharmacy in the summer of 2008
as an assistant professor.
Awards
• Kimberly A. Cappuzzo was
awarded the 2008 AFPE-RPS
Pharmacy Faculty Development
Fellowship in Geriatric Pharmacy/Geriatric
Pharmaceutical
Science. The stipend of $25,000
is matched by VCU to support
a minimum six-month faculty
development fellowship.
• Patty Slattum is the first pharmacist
to receive the William
B. Abrams Award in Geriatric
Clinical Pharmacology at the
2008 ASCPT Annual meeting
on April 2 in Orlando. She was
also recognized as the School of
Pharmacy Alumni Star during
commencement weekend and at a
private reception for Alumni Stars
on May 17, 2008.
• Amy L. Whitaker received the
2008 Pharmacy Alumni Service
Award from the MCV Alumni Association
on April 12.

• Bonny L. Bukaveckas received the
third and final year of funding for
the SmartWarf project, "Personalized
Medicine, Anticoagulation
Treatment," Gustavus and Louise
Pfeiffer Research Foundation,
$75,000, July 1, 2008.
• Sallie D. Mayer, Evan Sisson
and Brigitte L. Sicat have been
awarded a $17,000 grant from the
VCU Council for Community Engagement,
June 2008. The project
title is “Education and Care of
Patients with Hypertension and
Diabetes in a Free Clinic: Collaboration
between VCU School
of Pharmacy and Richmond Area
High Blood Pressure Center.”
• The Geriatric Pharmacotherapy
Program has received a grant for
$12,744 from the Virginia Center
on Aging to produce and deliver
to pharmacists located in rural
areas of Virginia a continuing
education program titled "Medication
Therapy Management in
Older Persons.”
• Edwin van den Oord is the principal
investigator on a new RO1
award from NHGRI, "Design and
analysis of adaptive multistage
genetic association studies,"
Period: April 2008–April 2011.
Total award amount: $900,000.
• James Zhang is a sub-recipient
on a CDC grant to study disparity
in ectopic pregnancy outcomes
($16,602).
• James Zhang is a sub-recipient
on a CDC grant to study healthrelated
quality of life of patients
with sickle cell diseases ($7,339).
Recognition
• Donald F. Brophy received
the VCU School of Pharmacy
Teacher of the Year Award.
• William R. Garnett had his
contributions to the understanding
of epilepsy highlighted at a
celebration on April 25 at the
Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens
in Richmond, Va.
• Gary R. Matzke and Donald F.
Brophy have been named Fellows
of the American Society of Nephrology
(FASN).
• Gary R. Matzke is serving as
president of ACCP through their
2008 annual meeting. In addition,
he has been elected chair
of the Council of Faculties of
the AACP and will assume this
responsibility at the July 2008
Annual Meeting of AACP.
• The APhA Foundation has recognized
the Ukrop's (Grocery)
Pharmacy Immunization initiative
in Richmond, Va. by awarding
the program a 2008 Pinnacle
Awards in the Group Practice
Category. The program was
spearheaded by Dr. Kelly Goode,
professor of pharmacy.

• The West Virginia University School of Pharmacy Relay for Life
team was named “Top Fundraiser” at the WVU Relay for Life event.
The students raised $7,579 and had 84 School of Pharmacy participants
at the event. This is the fourth year the school has been the
top fundraiser for the event.
