Fellowship in Geriatric Pharmacy/Geriatric<br />

Science. The stipend of $25,000<br />
is matched by VCU to support<br />
a minimum six-month faculty<br />
development fellowship.<br />
• Patty Slattum is the first pharmacist<br />
to receive the William<br />
B. Abrams Award in Geriatric<br />
Clinical Pharmacology at the<br />
<strong>2008</strong> ASCPT Annual meeting<br />
on April 2 in Orlando. She was<br />
also recognized as the School of<br />
Pharmacy Alumni Star during<br />
commencement weekend and at a<br />

• Sallie D. Mayer, Evan Sisson<br />
and Brigitte L. Sicat have been<br />
awarded a $17,000 grant from the<br />
VCU Council for Community Engagement,<br />
June <strong>2008</strong>. The project<br />
title is “Education and Care of<br />
Patients with Hypertension and<br />
Diabetes in a Free Clinic: Collaboration<br />
between VCU School<br />
of Pharmacy and Richmond Area<br />
High Blood Pressure Center.”<br />
• The Geriatric Pharmacotherapy<br />
Program has received a grant for<br />
$12,744 from the Virginia Center<br />
on Aging to produce and deliver<br />
to pharmacists located in rural<br />
areas of Virginia a continuing<br />
education program titled "Medication<br />
Therapy Management in<br />
Older Persons.”<br />
• Edwin van den Oord is the principal<br />
investigator on a new RO1<br />
award from NHGRI, "Design and<br />
analysis of adaptive multistage<br />
genetic association studies,"<br />
Period: April <strong>2008</strong>–April 2011.<br />
Total award amount: $900,000.<br />
• James Zhang is a sub-recipient<br />
on a CDC grant to study disparity<br />
in ectopic pregnancy outcomes<br />
($16,602).<br />
• James Zhang is a sub-recipient<br />
on a CDC grant to study healthrelated<br />
quality of life of patients<br />
with sickle cell diseases ($7,339).<br />

• Gary R. Matzke is serving as<br />

of the Council of Faculties of<br />
the <strong>AACP</strong> and will assume this<br />
responsibility at the <strong>Jul</strong>y <strong>2008</strong><br />

• The APhA Foundation has recognized<br />
the Ukrop's (Grocery)<br />
Pharmacy Immunization initiative<br />
in Richmond, Va. by awarding<br />
the program a <strong>2008</strong> Pinnacle<br />
Awards in the Group Practice<br />
Category. The program was<br />
spearheaded by Dr. Kelly Goode,<br />

team was named “Top Fundraiser” at the WVU Relay for Life event.<br />

at the event. This is the fourth year the school has been the<br />
