Appointments<br />

• Thomas Baillie has been selected as the next dean of<br />

the University of Washington School of Pharmacy.<br />

• Rodney J. Ho was appointed associate editor of the<br />

Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.<br />

• Susan Lakey was named postdoctoral fellow and<br />

received an NIH New Clinical Drug Evaluation Unit<br />

New Investigator Award.<br />

• Danny D. Shen was elected the <strong>2008</strong> Chair for Pharmaceutical<br />

Science for the American Association for<br />

the Advancement of Science.<br />

Awards<br />

• Don Downing was named Pharmacist Leader of the<br />

Year by Pharmacy Access Partnership. He also received<br />

a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition<br />

by the U.S. Congress.<br />

• John Hoekman was part of a team that took the<br />

$25,000 grand prize in the UW <strong>2008</strong> Business Plan<br />

Competition. Hoekman co-invented this technology<br />

with Rodney Ho, endowed chair of pharmaceutics,<br />

in the Ho Lab.<br />

• Sidney D. Nelson was named Outstanding Dean of<br />

the Year for 2007 by APhA-ASP.<br />

Grants<br />

• Jeannine S. McCune was awarded by the National<br />

Heart, Lung and Blood Institute a four-year R01<br />

entitled Population Pharmacokinetics/Pharmacodynamics<br />

in Nonablative Stem Cell Recipients.<br />

Recognition<br />

• The School of Pharmacy’s medicinal chemistry and<br />

pharmaceutical sciences research programs were<br />

scholarly productivity in a survey reported in The<br />

• John R. Horn presented a lecture on drug interactions<br />

with anticoagulants at Sharp HealthCare's<br />

Annual Anticoagulation Management Conference in<br />

San Diego.<br />

• John R. Horn, Shabir M. Somani, Pamela Wareham,<br />

Jacqueline Osborn and Philip D. Hansten presented<br />

a poster titled "Clinical decision support systems:<br />

Customization of a drug interaction database to<br />

avoid alert fatigue" at the American Society of<br />

Health-Systems Pharmacists summer meeting in<br />

Seattle.<br />

• Rene H. Levy gave the opening remarks at the 11th<br />

International Conference on Drug-Drug Interactions<br />

in Seattle. Carol Collins, Houda Hachad and<br />

Rodney Ho also presented at the conference.<br />

• Sidney D. Nelson gave the keynote address at the 7th<br />

International Conference on Early Toxicity Screening<br />

in Seattle.<br />

• Sean D. Sullivan published research findings that<br />

showed the antibody drug omalizumab (Xolair) is<br />

cost-effective for treating allergic asthma that has<br />

not responded fully to steroid inhalers and other<br />

medications.<br />

• Rheem A. Totah presented her work on arachidonic<br />

acid metabolism by CYP2J2 and cardiotoxicity at the<br />

Drug Metabolism Gordon Research Conference in<br />

<strong>Jul</strong>y in New Hampshire.<br />

Appointments<br />

• Roberta M. Barber has been appointed<br />

chair of pharmacy practice along with an<br />

academic appointment as clinical associate<br />

professor.<br />

• Curt Cyr has filled the position of associate<br />

dean, with an appointment as an<br />

associate professor.<br />

• Douglas H. Kay was appointed to the position<br />

of executive associate dean, having<br />

been appointed in April 2007 as special<br />

assistant to the dean.<br />

• Mark Polli joined the college in September<br />

2007 as director of experiential<br />

programs.<br />

• John V. Schloss will serve as chair of<br />

pharmaceutical sciences and is appointed<br />

as a professor.<br />

Recognition<br />

• The Maine State Board of Education<br />

has given its unconditional approval<br />

for UNE’s College of Pharmacy, and<br />

precandidate accreditation application<br />

materials were completed in May of<br />

<strong>2008</strong>. Fifty-three prepharmacy students<br />

are currently enrolled on the University’s<br />

campus in Biddeford.<br />

• Richard E. Stull, dean of the school<br />

of pharmacy and assistant provost for<br />

graduate studies at the University of<br />

Charleston in Charleston, W. Va., has<br />

accepted the college’s offer to become<br />

dean. He will lead the team that is<br />

charged with developing the first school<br />

of pharmacy in upstate South Carolina.<br />
