14 n SME /Franchising One of the recommendations in the ’Commission for Africa Report’ in having a sustainable growth programme was to "unleash the strong entrepreneurial spirit of African people". One of the practical ways of implementing this recommendation, it is argued, is through the development of the SME sector by creating an enabling environment for them to thrive. One of the main issues facing this sector today is a lack of funds. The advent of franchising as an option has seen the survival rate of these kind of businesses increased and in fact expanding. W orkshop Purpose: Participants will engage with experts from the industry and policy makers on policies which work; Success stories on existing businesses will be heard as well as best practices shared; Franchising as an alternative source of funding will be explored; How can the Diaspora bridge the gap as a source of finance; The outcomes of this workshop will be used to inform policy makers and other stakeholders who provided credit to SME’s on one level or another. n Real Estate Investment in real estate is one of the most common routes of remittances from the Diaspora and will continue to be so. Whilst there has been a sustained flow from the Diaspora, there needs to be a new way of thinking if these inflows are to be maintained. Accountability and quick transfer of ownership are examples of some of the challenges facing the sector from foreign investors. W orkshop Purpose: Issues such as land registration and other proprietary matters will be addressed; Delegates should expect to be informed of practical ways of financing these investments in Africa; Options such as mortgages will also be looked at. n Expected Outputs The workshops were planned in a fashion to enable the following outputs: A clear understanding of the main obstacles to investment Solutions and recommendations on how to overcome the barriers How to share best practices in a flexible manner Policies that can be easily implemented Active participation of the Diaspora A wareness of the various investment opportunities and matching investors with investments Conclusion This forum which is in its second year has brought about changes in the investment climate of Africa, and has provided Africa Diaspora Investment Forum
a platform for the sharing of information on opportunities, of interest to the Diaspora. Objectives on the way forward have been identified in key business areas, by policy-makers and government officials and some of these policies are currently being implemented.
