18 African Standard South Africa s Diaspora Newspaper The African Standard newspaper is a response to the rapidly growing West African diaspora in South Africa, as well as to the increasing business interconnectedness between the West and Southern regions. The project, the first of its kind in the region, and probably the continent, is the brainchild of Eniola Fadayomi, Chairman of Nigeria s Millennium Publishers which produces the Nigerian weekly newspaper, Financial Standard. She says the idea for the publication resulted from her many visits to South Africa. I could see South Africans had limited knowledge of what was happening in other parts of Africa. And yet, at the same time, there were moves towards greater integration of South Africa into the rest of Africa through various political initiatives. With the information revolution, the world is becoming a much smaller place and what we have to consider, in terms of this, is that it is not longer a question of an Africa-Europe axis. It is a question of what we can do within Africa, between countries. There is still considerable mistrust and competitiveness between African nationals, a situation that has made life difficult for many African expatriates living there, particularly those in low income jobs or unemployed, who claim marginalisation and discrimination by South Africans. As a result they have kept to themselves and are not mentioned at all in local newspapers except where members of their societies may end up on the wrong side of the law. However, professional West Africans are increasingly making themselves felt in the mainstream media in terms of a focus on their businesses or areas of expertise. The African Standard was designed to bring news from West Africa to the diaspora in South Africa and to reflect developments in their own communities. It has become popular with many Africans from other parts of the continent who have welcomed its recognition of the diaspora communities in their adopted country and as a vehicle for positive news about themselves and their countrymen. News covered in the publication includes community activities, interviews with nationals of various countries, profiles on successful Africans, investments by South Africans in West Africa and vice versa, events involving the diaspora as well as business and political news from West Africa. It also provides a window on African communities in their country for South Africans themselves. Africa Diaspora Investment Forum
There are an estimated 100,000 Nigerians alone believed to be living and working in South Africa. The exact numbers of the community at large from African countries outside South Africa is not able to be determined in any reliable way as many people arrive on tourist visas and stay on, or have limited contact with their diplomatic missions. But it seems that nationals from many countries have their own associations, restaurants and linkages from Eritrea and Kenya through to Senegal, Cote d Ivoire, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Democratic Republic of Congo. Launched in April 2004, the monthly tabloid newspaper went fortnightly in May 2005 to cater for growing demand in South Africa. There is also increasing demand for the publication in West Africa, primarily Nigeria, and distribution in the region is slowly increasing. Africa Diaspora Investment Forum
