The Union’s Power Comes From Members On The Floor Recently we meet with CAW Local 200’s bargaining committee to compile our amendments for our negotiations with Voith. Both locations are 100 per cent in support of moving forward to bring back the best collective agreement we can to the membership of Voith. On August 24, 2011 we will begin our local discussions with Oakville’s management along with discussions on our outstanding list of grievances. The strike mandate vote will be held on September 18th after the regularly scheduled membership meeting. With Bargaining Units #1 CBA up almost a year from now this could be the toughest round of negotiations we have ever seen. With the UAW negotiations ramping up, and another possible downturn in the U.S. economy lurking around the corner, and our dollar being so high, it could be the sequel to the movie Perfect Storm. Going forward we will have to pull all our resources together from the active workers, to the retired workers, and all our members who will be on layoff from the plant closure in St. Thomas to take on the Ford Motor Company. Profits and bonuses are flowing among the corporate wealthy, and workers are asked to be happy with what they have received, or asked to give concessions to help out corporate America. If it isn’t enough that workers are fighting just to maintain what we currently have, we are under the threat of globalization of the world’s economy breathing down our neck. Companies are trying to push the wages of the workers down, to create Vice-President’s Report By ron Balazs more wealth for the companies they work for, with the threat of moving jobs to market’s that will pay less per hour and disregard the safety of its workers. In my first term of being a Union Steward, I had a superintendent in my area that wrote up everyone for everything, the majority of the time without any pre-investigation at all. His favorite saying was “discipline would prevail!” The members of chassis stood together and took this person of management on. It was a heck of a fight, and took some time, but in the end he was sent packing back to the good ol US of A. If we band together with one common goal and take on management we can do wonders. Make sure we complete our jobs, if we aren’t able to, then make sure we use the proper channels to challenge the company by using your union representation e.g. Committeeperson, Time Standards, Ergo. The Union’s power comes from members on the shop floor, we as representative’s can tell the company to go pound salt so many times, but without the backing of the membership we are doomed. The old saying the “U in the Union is you” couldn’t say it better.
