President’s Report
2009-10 has been another great season for Suthie, with an increase in both Morning and Afternoon Competition
teams.
Morning Comp
It is great to see the Morning Competition grow again this year, junior players are an important part of the
Club both development and sustainment. In my travels around the grounds I see lots of kids enjoying themselves,
playing a sport that relies heavily on teamwork, sportsmanship, and discipline. The fun element is the most
important part of any sport, and skill development plays a large part of the fun. So I have to say a big thank you
to all the coaches:
Puppies 6 (Jack Russells) – Felicitie Vaccaro
Puppies 5 (Fox Terriers) – Victoria Mengelkamp
Puppies 4 (Corgis) – Rachel Dunn
Puppies 3 (Daschunds) – Kylie Robinson
Puppies 2 (Poodles) – Amanda Hanks (with a fair bit of help)
Puppies 1 (Beagles) – Margo Bain and Bridget “Barty” Corver
Suthie 7 – Vanessa Smith
Suthie 6 – Lindsay White
Suthie 5 – Amanda Hanks (with a fair bit of help)
Suthie 4 – Matt Morrissey
Suthie 3 – Jane Robbins
Suthie 2 – Alan Wishewan
Suthie 1 – Kirsten Galafassi
To all the managers, scorers and parents, thank you for your part in developing our future softballers. Your time,
effort and endless hard work is greatly appreciated and without you the Suthie family wouldn't exist.
Any club is only as successful as the behind the scene support it can gather. A huge thank you to Sharee Thomas
for stepping in as Morning Competition Registrar, I know this is not an easy job particularly with so many teams.
Your effort in organising the morning competition has been invaluable and we hope to see you next year.
Afternoon Comp
A great showing the Afternoon Competition with 5 out of the 6 teams in the finals, an outstanding effort for such
a small club!
The Club has actively attempted to grow softball in the district and it was great to see the introduction of the Boys
U14 Team for Sutherland. This is a welcome addition to the club, potentially the start of growth and hopefully we
will see boys wearing the red and blue for many years to come.
As always, a huge thank you to Margo and Alan for your tireless work with Divs 1, 2 and 3 and U16s and a special
thank you to Brad Vance for stepping up with our U14 Boys this season.
Playing in front of parents, friends and family makes our games special and I would personally like to thank all
the supporters. In all the Suthie games I’ve seen, there’s been a well patronised sideline. This reflects well on the
Club and reinforces Suthie's values of family and community.
Good luck to everyone in the finals. Play well, do your best, do yourselves and us proud!
President’s Report
At the representative level, Sutherland has again done well with a number of players selected in all levels of
representation teams. Congratulations to all the Suthie Players who made:
WVSA Teams for the Junior Championships;
Canberra Teams;
State Teams;
Australian U 19 Squad; and
Special mention to Aimee Murch, CONGRATULATIONS on being selected in the 2010 Australian “Aussie Spirit”
team.
I mentioned the importance of volunteers to the success of any sporting club. I would like to thank everyone for
their contribution to the club this year, with special thanks going to the Committee Members. Without the hard
work of these volunteers the season couldn't have run as smoothly as it did. We were fortunate to gain some
new members join the Committee this season, bringing new ideas and views. Remember that there are always
vacant positions and new blood is always welcome, lots of volunteers reduce the workload of all! Join us and do
your bit to help this club grow and achieve its goals. As an example I would like to single out the volunteers who
helped out at the BBQs and Cake Stalls. These activities are the only fundraising activities conducted by the Club
and your contribution has helped the club raise over $1500 used towards purchasing new equipment (and
consequently keeping our Club fees low).
The Club has been fortunate to have had assistance from the following sponsors:
Vickers Lodge
Ricoh
One Steel
Formach
Queanbeyan West Rotary Club
Support them as they support our Club and softball in our region.
See you all next season.
MORNING
Puppies 6 (Jack Russell’s)
The Jack Russell’s entered the competition purely to have fun and gain skills along the way. I am happy to say that
the team managed to do both.
As only two of our players had any experience with Diamond Ball, and the majority was under school age, it was
always going to be interesting. The first couple of sessions were spent getting to know each other and working
out which direction would lead us to first base!
To the team’s credit, everyone quickly learnt the basics and started to focus on their batting and throwing
abilities. We can now proudly say that throwing the ball forwards and in a straight line is one of our
accomplishments.
Whilst the definite preference was batting, everyone fielded without fuss and worked together as a team. We
rotated positions and everyone knew what area to cover. This stopped the whole team running for each ball,
leaving no-one on the field - a common occurrence early in the season.
We worked hard to be good sports both with our fellow team mates and also our competitors. I am pleased that
this was something that came easily to everyone on the team.
Thank you to the parents who turned up each week to provide encouragement. In particular, a special mention to
Belinda, who coached the team when I was unavailable.
Well done team – it was a great season that you should feel proud of. You improved in all areas of the game
and tried your very best, every time.
I hope to see you all again next season!
Puppies 4 & 5 (Corgis & Fox Terriers)
What a fantastic team of feisty little Fox Terriers and Corgis we had this year! Although it didn’t seem possible,
each week the teams came along more enthusiastic than the week before. The teams played with such great
spirit and tenacity all season and should be very proud of their efforts. The enjoyment of the teams on and off the
field made for a great experience for the coach’s family and friends.
Sophie M
Sophie’s determination to learn & practice every aspect of diamond ball has paid off with her skills improving by
leaps and bounds this season. A great asset to the team. You should be proud Sophie!!
Scott
Scott’s blistering speed between bases and batting skill were impressive to say the least. He was an active and
versatile team player who was always very focused during the game. Congratulations Scott!!
Mitchell
Mitchell’s enthusiasm for the game has led him to improve his skills immensely throughout the season. The smile
on his face after he hit the ball would light up the diamond. Fantastic work Mitchell!!
Bronte
Bronte has had a solid first season of diamond ball, growing in confidence with her efforts on the field. Her bat
and ball skills and enthusiasm for the game have improved greatly throughout the year. Wonderful effort
Bronte!!
Curtis
An enthusiastic member of the team. Curtis was always involved in the action. He has a powerful hit once he gets
his eye on the ball. A great effort for your first season Curtis!!
Alyssia
With her always smiling face and her keen to be involved attitude, she has really improved her all of her skills this
year. Awesome effort Alyssia!!
Mackenzie
Always keen and happy, and has developed some great skills this season. Her can do attitude has attributed to
her developing some great physical skills. Well done Mackenzie!!
Jacqueline
What a batting star, look to the outfield there goes the ball! We love your great attitude and determination.
Fantastic effort all season Jacqueline.
Patrick
Our speed star! Your base running and fielding has been brilliant all season. We love your enthusiasm and team
attitude, well done Patrick.
Sophie K
One of our big improvers! All aspects of your game have improved out of sight this season Miss Sophie, especially
your fielding. Great job.
Lachlan
One of our big left-handed hitters! We love how you always want to field next to your sister and help her out!
Great first season Lachie.
Riley
Our biggest improver! We love your enthusiasm to field the ball and to throw straight. Once the tee was raised
your batting improved out of sight, well done Riley.
Cade
Our most experienced player and a great team mate. We love your accurate throwing, great fielding and all
round knowledge and attitude. Way to go Cade.
The Corgis and Fox Terriers enjoyed the season greatly. With both coaches and the vast majority of players new
to the game we all took a few weeks to find our feet. We had fun rotating players and positions throughout both
teams and having a joint training day after school. All players have shown fantastic improvement in skills over the
season. We have appreciated your enthusiasm and team spirit, and you should all be really proud of your
achievements. A big thanks to all the parents who helped every week with things such as getting helmets on,
providing fruit for the players, and standing in the outfield to help with concentration! See you all next season for
tee-ball!
Puppies 3 (Daschunds)
What a fun season we have had. This is the first time all of us have had a go at Diamond Ball. We have learned
how to throw a ball, hit the ball, run around the bases. Work together as a team, taking turns in different
positions. And to have a GO!! The girls were wonderful listeners and a pleasure to coach. Thank you for the
support of the wonderful parents who watched, cheered and helped out every week.
Lily Davis – Oh How fast you run to first base!! You love to hit the ball and practice throwing that ball. Well done
Lily!!
Bethany Robertson - our crazy fast sprinter. One day she will always be the last batter because she can hit the
ball for miles and run as fast as the wind. Awesome Benny!!
Olivia Farmer – A brilliant batter who is always watchful and keen to try hard. She has a lovely rapport with her
team mates. Well done Olivia.
Jessica Burrows – When Jess keeps her eye on that ball, she can belt it out there for miles. Jess always has an
anecdote about why she missed the first one and then bam…. She can blast it out there.
Charlotte Stimson – the girl with her glove to the ground and her best listening ears on. Nothing passes Charlotte
– Good Work!!
Charlotte Kyneston- Can do girl. Charlotte loves to bat and field. She understood the concept and had a really fun
time. Well done Charlotte.
Sofie Nielsen – Our gorgeous Sofie who can hit that ball for a six. She can run like a demon and pounce on that
ball. Great work Sof!!!
Puppies 2 (Poodles)
Chelsea Atherton (WVSA Rep Player) – You wouldn’t know this was Chelsea’s first year on the diamond. A natural
t-baller. Thanks Chelsea and well done.
Ben Craven – A real little gentlemen and smile on the dial was a pleasure to see. A great understanding of the
game both at bat and on the field. Congratulations Ben.
Kyle de la Rue – Not always awake on Saturday mornings but a confident and reliable player taking some great
catches in the field and always backing up. Well done Kyle.
Joel Dodds (WVSA Rep Player) – Thank goodness for hats with names on them!! A little keen bean ready to chase
the ball down, wherever gets hit and a speedy base runner. Thanks Joel.
Will Dodds (WVSA Rep Player) – Another magnet to the ball with infectious enthusiasm for t-ball and leader of
the cheers on the bench. Awesome season Will.
Hayden Hamilton (WVSA Rep Player) – A little powerhouse with the bat and a speedy runner to boot. Always
reliable to get the runners home. Great job Hay-face.
Zak Harding – A new player who improved a lot throughout the season developing strong fielding and batting
skills. Thanks Zak.
Meg McGovern – Pretty in pink. Both Meg’s throwing and batting improved out of sight this season. We couldn’t
be prouder. Well done Meg.
Jeremy Morrissey – Another enthusiastic player who clearly loved the game. His throwing and catching came in
leaps and bounds over the season and a pleasure to coach. Thanks Jeremy.
Cameron Williams (WVSA Rep Player) – A quiet achiever and a batting powerhouse. Reliable in any fielding
position and made last batter his own. Congratulations Cameron.
Layla Wilson – A little shy but that didn’t stop her improving her all-round game throughout the season. A safe
batter and consistent base runner. Excellent season Layla.
Abby Wood – Don’t let Abby’s size fool you – once she got going, she was unstoppable. She proved that girls
really do rule, just like her pink bat says!! Great season Abby.
We would like to thank all the parents for getting the kids to training and games on time. A special thank you to
Annie and Penny (when she could drag herself out of bed) for scoring each and every week – we really appreciate
it.
To all the t-ballers, thanks so much for making this season a joyous one. We had a great time and hope to see you
all next season.
Amanda and Beth.
Puppies 1 (Beagles)
Suthie Beagles are a team with personality plus. Margo’s dog must have plenty of personality because that’s who
we are named after. Some of us are playing for the very first season and actually we’re quite a young team for
Teeball 1.
A special thanks to the parents who each week support our team and assist in many ways. A special thanks to Liz
our scorer, Wendy and Kate our bench organisers and motivators.
Margo is magnificent – mostly we do listen to her and some of us even made rep teams so something is going
right! Bridget our assistant coach is helping us as well and wears very cool shoes.
We can’t wait til next year! Maybe some older Beagles will hang up their Puppies shirts for modball.
Introducing the Suthie Beagle Puppies Team
Michael – our newest player but definitely not new to Teeball! Michael certainly has a keen sense about the
game and it has been terrific to have him join us.
Mason – is a very experienced and keen member of our team whose skills have shown marked improvement this
year especially in his batting technique. Mason has the game sense to play most positions.
Mae – is a quietly skilled player whose enthusiasm is always shown on her smiling face. Mae has shown great
development in both her fielding and batting this year.
Karrii – another player who has come through the diamond ball and tball program and this shows in her skill level.
A very accomplished fielder with a great sense about using her glove to catch and field. Her batting is strengthing
with each hit she makes.
Bronte – a quiet and thinking little player who has shown great improvements since the start of the season. Her
throwing and catching have become awesome this season.
Maddie – is our pocket rocket. Maddie has all the skill levels packed into a little small package. She is a great
listener and applies what she is taught at both training and during the games.
Owen – first year introduction to tball but has shown his natural sporting ability this season. Very talented with
the bat and his speed around the bases has been impressive.
Cameron – is our calmest player. From our first training Cameron has worked hard at learning to properly throw
the ball and improve his batting technique. All season though he has shown his very strong glove skills.
Alan – Alan is the big boy of our team. This has been displayed in his powerful hitting. And with each game his
fielding is improving with confidence and improvement in his throwing skills.
Joseph – Although it’s his first season, Joseph has taken enthusiastically to teeball and is a key player already.
Joseph too has worked hard at improving his skills and this has shown through with better throwing and glove
skills from the start of the season.
Chloe – Chloe is our bouncing bubble. A very talented player, when concentrating, who has great speed around
the bases and has worked hard at remaining tall in the batting box. A terrific throw that is strong and to the
target.
Nicholas – A young member of our team that is working hard at developing his skills. Shows great talent potential
in teeball and with some further experience will develop strongly.
In closing I would like to thank all the kids for their positive support through out the season and hope they have
enjoyed it as much as I have. Each player has their own special talents personality and from this they have been
keen to learn and succeed in giving their very best.
A very special thanks to Barty my assistant coach and I hope she too has learnt from the experience and will
continue to give her support and guidance to up and coming softball players so that they may one day enjoy this
sport at the top level as she does. I have appreciated her support and companionship at both training and on
game day.
I hope everyone can see and enjoy the improvements each player has made through the season and continue to
support their children whichever sporting endeavours they choose.
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of coaching your children.
Margo Bain
Suthie 7 (Modball)
Anneliese Brenner proved to be a consistent batter and great catcher. Anneliese made the WVSA Rep modball
team and the Canberra under 12 team.
Jade Kuru showed signs of being a good pitcher and was also great at catcher. Jade made the WVSA Rep modball
team.
Emily Phillips proved to be a pitcher in the making and was a consistent batter throughout the season. Emily
made WVSA Rep t-ball team.
Micaela Tuohy was a consistent batter and a great pitcher, getting many strike-outs. Micaela made the WVSA
Rep t-ball team.
Tara Williamson had many great games at first base and it was great to see her batting improve over the season.
Tara made the WVSA Rep modball team
Rosemary Schweizer pitched great in every game she played and batted consistently throughout the
season. Rosemary made WVSA Rep modball team and the Canberra under 12 team.
Casey Williamson proved to be a great all-rounder, fielding well in any position and batting consistently. Casey
made the WVSA Rep t-ball team.
Caroline DeWan continued to improve her skills throughout the season and was hitting the ball well. Caroline
was a great listener and was always willing to learn.
Natasha Robinson had many great games at 2nd base and was always quick to get the ball in from the outfield.
Natasha was also quick at running around the bases.
Lucy Grimes was a consistent batter and fielder, playing well in every position that she was put into. Lucy made
the WVSA Rep modball team.
Tandia Collins had many great games at 1st base and made several outs from short-stop. Tandia was also a
consistent batter throughout the season.
Shannon Pritchard had many great games at catcher and in the outfield and it was great to see her batting
become more consistent over the season.
Suthie 7 were a pleasure to coach and all of the girls improved immensely over the season. I hope to see you all
back next season.
Vanessa
Suthie 6 (Modball)
It was appropriate that our team was Sutherland Six. We had six girls and six boys. We had six new modballers and six
returning modballers. The Sixers come from six different schools. When we lost two of the first three games I thought we'd
finish at least sixth. The Sixers then won six games in a row, and we finished in the top few.
The awards for the Sixers are below (with those from Telopea Primary also having theirs in French).
Most versatile - Emily McNaught. Emily is a delight to coach. Emily played in every position during the year, and was always
smiling. Schmem swings the bat beautifully, and did some great throws over to first base.
Great batting- Excellent frappe - Balthus Vial. Balthus a une coordination visuelle remarquable, et il frappe la balle presque a
chaque fois qu'il essaie. Balthus a une grande surete de main et beaucoup d'autres atouts pour jouer en interieur.
Great batting - Balthus Vial. Balthus has wonderful hand-eye co-ordination, and he hit the ball almost every time he swung at it. Balthus also has fast hands
and a lot of skill in the in-field.
Most ready for softball 2 (boys) - Lachlan McGovern. Following a couple of tweaks to his pitching action early in the season,
Lach rapidly developed into one of the best pitchers in modball. He hit a lot of home runs too! The Sixers voted Lach as
captain, and he was a fine leader.
Biggest improvement at batting - Monique White. Monique’s batting improved a lot after her now cash-strapped parents
purchased a new bat for her. Monique is fantastic at running around the bases. Squeak is also a very good pivot, and her
glove work took a big step forward this year.
Best in-fielder - Claudia DeGrave-Nott. Claudia took some wonderful catches at full stretch at first base this year. Claudia is
also a fast runner, and is steadily getting more confident at bat.
Best team-mate - Madelyn Ferguson. Madelyn was a great source of encouragement to the other Sixers. Madelyn's pitching
came a long way this year, and she was wonderful at covering second base. Madelyn also did some wonderful hits.
Best all-rounder - Alex McDonald. Alex was the 'Shane Watson' of the Sixers. Alex is very reliable as a batter, good in the
field, and got a lot of batters out with his accurate pitching.
Great base running - Jake Collins. Just like Dash in the movie "the Incredibles", Jake disappears from one base and arrives at the next. He probably runs
between the two bases, but it happens so fast that it is difficult to tell whether he is running or flying. Jake played some good softball at shortstop, and took a
very nice catch.
Coaches award - Choix de l'entraineur - Benjamin Irwin. Benjamin est un remarquable petit gars, tout le temps heureux et
a l'oreille fine. Ben a ameliore de maniere certaine son travail avec le gant, et Ben a marque beaucoup de runs pour les
Sixers.
Coaches award - Benjamin Irwin. Benjamin is a lovely young chap, very happy and a good listener. Ben's glove work improved considerably during the year,
and Ben scored many runs for the Sixers.
Best left handed pitcher - Katherine Halikoitis. Kath has a wonderful, natural pitching action and with further practice could
develop into a very good pitcher. Kath has a great eye and is also a good batter.
Most promising - Le plus prometteur - Hamish Jeffrey.
Hamish a ete elu vicecapitaine
des sixers.
Most promising - Hamish Jeffrey. Hamish's glove skills, speed, size and personality suggest (at least to this coach) that he could develop into a fantastic
catcher or third base if he chooses to. Hamish was the 'salt' of the team. His brave hitting and zooming around the bases were a real highlight. The Sixers
voted Hamish to be one of their vice captains.
Most ready for softball 2 (girls) - Jessica Leitch. Jess is one of the best catchers in modball, a handy pitcher, and a reliable and
very powerful batter. Jess is a determined leader, and was a great vice captain of the Sixers. Jess is always a treat to coach,
and has a fabulous positive attitude to sport.
The Sixers received much warm support from a lot of folks. Thank you to Andre, Ken, and Mark for a lot of assistance with
coaching. Thank you to Annie, Julie and Caroline for managing the Sixers. Thank you to Fiona, Jeannette, Amanda and Mel for
scoring. Thank you to Christophe for translating from English to French. And thank you to the parents for your cheering and
having your Sixer at the playing fields usually on time.
Sixers - I look forward to seeing most or all of you playing softball or modball next season. . Well done guys, really good job.
Lindsay White (coach).
Suthie 5 (Softball 2)
Molly Atherton – Our rookie this season, Molly’s enthusiasm made her a joy to coach, even though one of us
tried to kill her... (no names...Beth!). Her skills and confidence grew and she held her own with the more
experienced players. All those first year nerves were gone after a few weeks. Thanks Molly – see you next year
for another awesome season.
Tara Brown (WVSA Rep Player) – Ahhh Tara... Always with a smile on the face and a bounce in her step. Two
things – don’t flick your glove and throw it like you mean it!!! And one more thing... you can probably stop
growing now so at least one of the coaches is taller than you (no names... Amanda). Good on ya, Tara (awesome)
Damien Gates (WVSA Rep Player) – Damien and his bestie amongst all the girls...and lovin’ it!! Damien’s all round
game has improved out of sight this season making it very easy for us as coaches. Coming in as a clean-up batter
really helped the team out in the tight games and, by the way, there are two coaches and we’re not both named
Amanda. Thanks Dami-anna... totally awesome
Maarni Johnstone (WVSA Rep Player) – Another player who’s outgrown one coach...in height at least. Maarni’s
power with the bat lead to more than one home run this season and at least one grand slam – AWESOME. Our
constant pleas for them to talk on the field never made past training for Maarni but there’s always next season.
You’re awesome.
Georgia Keen (WVSA Rep Player) – The cheekiest on the diamond!! Gee just loves to play. Her versatility on the
field gave us confidence to put her anywhere. Her speedy base running left others in her dust. Thanks for a great
season Gee, you’re awesome too.
Eleni Metallinos – A social butterfly with a bubbly personality but always a reliable player. Eleni filled the holes
and made the outs and for that we’re thankful. Consistent with the bat and ensured the RBI’s. Thanks again Eleni
– you’re awesome as well.
Catherine Penhale – Catherine may lack the killer instinct for truly competitive sport but it was clear she
thoroughly enjoys playing softball and always had a smile her face. While hesitant to swing the bat in the first half
of the season, she was a different batter after the Christmas break. Thanks Catherine, awesome season.
Jilli Scott (WVSA Rep Player) – Jilli, what can we say about Jilli... A cheeky grinner who’s come out of her shell big
time this season. Jilli is a play maker with a safe glove and a reliable throw. She’s a very clever base runner with
the ultimate determination. Maybe she’ll slide for her Bestie, one day. Jilli = Awesome.
Amelia Turner (WVSA Rep Player) – A base running whippet!! The early timeslot did nothing for Amelia, while
always there in body, sometimes the brain just hadn’t quite woken up, yet. However, once the first innings was
over, Amelia’s potential and game play was evident. Thanks for yet another season Amelia. Awesomeness!
Kim Van Kooten – Kim, Kim, Kim... if only there was an off switch so early in the morning. Kim was a solid player
who took some great catches at centre field. Her enthusiasm was infectious and always gave the rest the team a
boost. There’s no chance of Kim fading into the scenery, if she wasn’t talking, she was singing... All the single
ladies!!! Awesome voice Kim!!
Benjamin Vance (WVSA Rep Player) – Ben and his bestie amongst all the girls...and lovin’ it!! Ben made pitching
his priority and didn’t disappoint, however his all-round ability made him a great utility player. Taking the leap to
afternoon has really reflected his skill level. Awesome job Benjamin-a.
A MASSIVE thank you to our manager, Leisa, and our scorer, Kerri – you make our job easy. We would like to
thank every single parent for getting the kids to training and games every week and just for being the best
parents we, as coaches, could ask for.
To Suthie 5 players – congratulations on an awesome season...There’s nothing more to say... YOU KNOW WE
LOVE YOU!!!!
Amanda and Beth
Suthie 4 (Softball 2)
Several players from Suthie 4 had never played softball before the commencement of the 2009/10 season which
caused a few minor challenges, but it certainly has been great watching the players develop their skills
throughout the year.
Due to unforseen circumstances, our team numbers dwindled toward the end of the season, but we managed to
battle on with the help of various substitute players each week and I would like to thank those players for their
efforts – we certainly appreciated your help!
Congratulations to Eilish and Olivia who were both selected in representative teams. You both certainly deserved
your selection!
It has been a pleasure coaching the team and I wish all of the players the very best of luck for the next season.
Tristan Hamilton –
Tristan achieved a couple of strike-outs on the pitching mound and managed to bring the team home on more
than one occasion with his home-run hitting ability! When his confidence levels are high, Tristan certainly is a
player to watch. Well done!
Johanna De Vries
Having never played before, Johanna is a prominent fielder with good catching skills and a strong throw. This
assisted in some good base plays throughout the season. Johanna worked hard with her batting and is
developing into a good player. Great job and good luck next season!
Eilish Tuohy –
Eilish is a very committed player who has consistently proven her ability to field in any position. Eilish always
shows skill with both bat and ball always encourages her team mates in the field. Great season!
Hannah O’Brien –
Hannah is a great team member who always has a smile on her face and encourages others in the field. Hannah
enjoyed success on the pitchers mound as well as her time as catcher. Hannah worked on improving her batting
skills and managed to get around the bases on most occasions. Good luck next year!
Liam Pratt –
On the times that Liam was able to play he showed good skills in the field as well as on the pitchers mound and at
the batter’s plate. Liam has the ability to play well in all positions and the skills to be a great player next season.
Alix Brill-Jamieson –
Alix is a very strong fielder who plays well on any of the bases and is able to take sharp catches which almost lead
to some double-plays throughout the season. Changing to a longer bat helped Alix with her batting skills and she
is starting to develop as a softball all-rounder. Well done!
Olivia Friel –
Olivia is an enthusiastic competitor who has a natural ability to read the game which has assisted her greatly in
her role as catcher. Olivia always encourages team mates and worked well with our pitchers throughout the
season in securing some strong ‘outs’. Olivia also performed well with the bat, getting around the bases on most
occasions. Great job and good luck next season!
Phoebe Morrissey –
Phoebe is a committed player who has grown in confidence throughout the season. Good fielding abilities meant
that she was valuable in the outfield as well as in close. Phoebe managed to get on to a few solid hits and is
developing skills that will make her a more consistent and successful player in the future. Good luck next season!
Caitlin Gwynn-Jones –
In the time that she had with Suthie 4, Caitlin was developing into a strong player. Her flair on the pitchers
mound, batting ability and fast base running made her a very strong team player. Caitlin’s strong fielding skills
meant that she could be placed anywhere in the field with confidence. Well done!
Nathan Lucas –
On the times that he played, Nathan showed good skills in the field and in the batter’s box. Nathan showed
ability for the game that could see him develop into a great player next season.
Matt Morrissey - Coach
Suthie 3 (Softball 2)
Ryan Borg Caruana – As a representative of the of the Under 14’s WVSA team, Ryan provided developed skills and
a strong knowledge of the game. He was always keen to get out onto the diamond and give 100% to every game
and training session. Ryan was one of the main pitchers in the team and did a great job on the mound.
Jessica Cristallo – Jess was always very committed to the team and was keen at trainings to try her best and learn
more each week to further develop her game. Jess was able to play at any position in the field. A very valuable
all round player and a great person to coach.
Mollee Marsh – This season was Mollee’s first season at playing softball. She had a very strong throw even at the
first training session and grew with confidence throughout the season. She has developed her knowledge and
skills of the game greatly and we hope to see her back for a second season.
Nick Marshall – Nick has been a consistent player throughout the season, putting in hits when needed and having
a strong glove in the field. He has been very committed to the game and he has improved even further on his
batting this season.
Jack McDonald – Jack has been a really enjoyable character within the side, always bringing enthusiasm to every
game and training session. Whether it is singing songs or cheering on his team mates, Jack and, his partner in
crime, Anastasia have made the season very enjoyable. Jack has also been a strong player, from hitting some of
the biggest hits of the season to taking the pressure of pitching.
Anastasia Metallinos – As another very strong character within the side, Anastasia has brought many smiles,
laughs and fun to the team this season. We have finally discovered that we step before we swing and which way
the glove goes when catching a ball, making Anastasia a strong and consistent player and taking some lovely
catches throughout the season.
Laura Penhale – Laura was a very enjoyable player to coach. She was at every training and game with a smile on
her face and willing to give everything her best. She batted at no.1 all season and does a fake bunt pushing the
catcher back perfectly. Laura was a very consistent player with the bat and in the field, even having a pitch. Hope
to see you next season Laura!
Daniel Ray – Daniel was the back bone of the team providing such great knowledge and skills to every game. As a
WVSA and Canberra representative he made many outs at shortstop and always wanted to try different things
with the bat. I have enjoyed coaching Daniel for several seasons now and hope that there are many more still to
come.
Mikayla Robinson – Mikayla was a very quiet achiever and really enjoyed getting out onto the diamond every
weekend and giving everything a go. She was consistent in the field making many outs playing at 2 nd base and
even had a go at pitching. Mikayla was very committed and a great asset to our team.
Vivienne Schweizer – As the main catcher, Vivienne played a very dominant role within the team. She provided
great skills and athleticism to every game. Vivienne was a pleasure to coach and brought great commitment and
enthusiasm to the team. She is great little player and very strong with the bat and ball.
Jake Waller – Jake showed great commitment and dedication to his game, and particularly to his pitching. He did
a great job as one of the team’s main pitchers, constantly making the batters swing. Jake was a very versatile
player adapting to any field position and keen to bunt the ball given the opportunity.
I would like to say a special thank you to Chris Ray for scoring every weekend and Janice Borg Caruana for when
Chris was away. Also, too Mark McDonald for helping out with training sessions and Jerome for filling in on some
umpiring duties. I look forward to seeing everyone back next season.
Jane
Suthie 2 (Softball 1)
Suthie fielded two teams this year in Div 1 Softball. We (luckily) had some very experienced team members to
show us the way but for many of the Suthie 2 players, even wearing the Suthie uniform and having a proper coach
for the first time was highly exciting. It was only a year or so since Teeball...
A massive thanks to our very special and wise coach Alan Wishewan – and our wonderful trio of scorers (Jeanette,
Chris, Fiona) one of which would magically appear each week...And to Wendy who has somehow managed to
manage things.
Special mention too to the all the Suthie 2 players who also contribute to the game as junior umpires. There we
really do punch above our weight – well done.
Michael Spitzowski – “the platinum flash” - magic in the field and lightning around the bases. Excellent leader in
the infield.
Zak Collins – the calm outside hides a pretty big hit that gets those runners home
Eli Daniels – our main catcher – very safe hands and a mighty hard worker week in week out! Fantastic rd 12 sky
catch.
Nick Dewan – our lefty – Nicky always gets to first, gets out of trouble and gets behind the team.
Alex Jobson – Strong all round player who continues to improve and is always right in the action. Didn’t know he
could play outfield til he held those two catches in rd 12...
Angus Jeffery – Our youngest Suthie 2 player. Gets home – Angus loves to slide. No fear. Watch out in future!
Matthew Irwin – Our youngest Suthie 2 players best mate, irrepressibly willing and positive and a very big
improver this season. Cant wait til next year!
Natalee Wishewan – Did a great job as our main pitcher, Suthie 2’s on and off field leader. Great job Nat!
Kieryn Vance - enthusiastic pitcher and infielder. Plays with skill and great spirit (and a loud family cheer squad).
Well done!
Andrew Ray – unleashes a deadly drive through second and a versatile infielder. Enthusiastic supporter of the
team and his teammates on and off field
Harvey Keown – Deadly serious softballer and a versatile utility player. Put him anywhere or give him a bat and
he couldn’t be happier.
Jess Borg – Calm and capable particularly at first and short stop.we really missed Jess when she left us mid season
for work.
Suthie 1 (Softball 1)
The 09/10 season got off to an interesting start with a group of boys from last year’s Suthie 2 team deciding it was
time to step it up and have a crack at the big time. They joined together with the older and wiser girls already
playing Softball 1 and were graciously accepted into the fold.
There was some initial shyness from the boys but the outgoing female energy soon brought them out of their
shells. Once the ice had been broken the group found themselves part of a great team who were always
laughing, joking and towards the end, playing some pretty decent softball.
Whilst the results of the season were mixed, we finished strongly and there were definitely some fantastic
highlights with each player having some outstanding moments.
Amy pitched the vast majority of the season and did a great job making sure the opposition were made to work.
A memorable moment with the bat was her determination to score a home run off a hit to the pitcher – never
give up and just keep running (no matter what the coach says...!)
Tess was head cheerleader, spurring the team on to new heights with her enthusiasm, energy and very loud
encouragement. She played consistently well at first base, showed good skills with the bat and always managed
to bring out the best in everyone.
David had a great season with the bat, working his way up to several home runs – even though he waited until the
end of the season to realise he can run really fast. He was great in the outfield and took some spectacular
catches.
Josh was the most experienced player and each time he came up to bat the opposition outfielders moved back so
far they ended up standing in the games behind them. More often than not he still managed to hit over their
heads and a couple of times he could have run the bases twice before the ball made it back in. He is a natural
talent who will go far in the game.
Alex improved a great deal this season both with the bat and in the field. He had a stream of safe hits and his
throw from the outfield can be deadly accurate. He is not one of the loudest team members but always works
hard and can be counted on to give his best every week.
Caleb played his first season of softball this year and by the end of it looked like he had been playing for years. He
took some great catches in the outfield and as our only left hander kept the pitchers on their toes by mixing it up
in the batters box. By the last couple of games he was getting a safe hit almost every time at bat.
Jacob would play softball every day if he could – if only it were a winter sport too…! He spent most of the season
as catcher which he played really well but was always keen to get out into the field if he could. At bat he
managed to score himself some home runs as well as a grand slam. Jacob also took on all the umpiring
commitments this year so a big thanks to him for that.
Zoe was the quiet achiever who played second base with grace and confidence. She was able to read the game
well and could be counted on to cover the bases when necessary. Zoe was committed to her training and always
one of the first to arrive before the game – usually the only one who wasn’t late.
Bree had some spectacular moments and brought lots of youthful fun to the game. She is a natural athlete who is
skilled in any position and was often seeing flying though the air in her determination to get the ball. Bree had
some big hits throughout the season but was also keen to put down a bunt to get the runners around.
Zak was undoubtedly the most improved player this season, building up his skills until he was scoring a couple of
home runs a game. He was always willing to play wherever he was put, even those positions he was not familiar
with. He played equally well at pitcher, catcher, second base or outfield and was a gracious and well liked team
player.
Well done team – it was a pleasure to coach you all and I hope everyone is back to play again next year.
AFTERNOON
Under 14 Boys
It took a bit of work to get going but from the start the new U14 boys Suthie team 2009-10 was a terrific
experience for all players! So many people need our biggest thanks but two most of all - Our mentor coach Alan
Baines runs challenging and fun training sessions each Tuesday. We like our coaches with character and ours was
the remarkable and hardworking Brad Vance.
Against much more experienced sides, Suthie U14 Boys won loads of support and respect. The “L plate” parent
team pulled together and had fun. After game 1 (against an ACT team) the motto was “no mercy rule for Suthie
and the only way was up! As the season went on calm and reliable scorer Mel Collins added more and more runs
to our side. On the score card by finals time there were 123 runs and our precious one run win against Storm. The
players earned them all.
Alex Ashton - Batted at number 1, with a sound left field drive. Our left fielder - the first of our hardworking
outfield, he caught them and stopped them – look forward to next season Alex!
David Varley – The happiest centrefield who caught those balls and foiled those home runs from the big names.
No slouch with the bat either.
Zak Collins “Z with a K” got a new bat and hit bigger as the season went on. The last of our busy outfield team –
once the right field has done his job well they leave him be and try somewhere else!
Zac Eldridge “Z with a C” – An excellent, cheeky base runner – gets down in the dirt at home base no worries.
Good driving batter.
Jake Galafassi. Without fail Jake gave everything, every single game for the team. Ripping throws, catches and
third base play. Our best show at a home run....a few solid three basers.
Jordan Mulach An true infield leader, Jordan really lifts the team and is always thinking about the game. Great
position play at second.
Harvey Keown. Versatile, committed player – short stop or first or wherever you want him. Some great infield
combos with Jake and Zak E to get outs. Keeping count of his second base hits.
Damian Gates. Our beaming pitcher who just got better and better. Damian has two more years in U14 which is
great news for Suthie. By the end of the season he was notching up some pretty big scalps
Benjamin Vance. Another youngster who’s a deadly pitcher in the making (when he’s not catching). Plenty of
ticker as they say – another great left field drive with the bat. Another 2 great years in U14.
Chris Williams. A calm influence, Chris deserves special mention for his outstanding catching for top U14 ACT
pitchers that had a little turn on our side from time to time....excellent work Chris.
Under 16 Girls
Again I have had the pleasure of being the coach of spectacular group of young girls enthusiastic about their
passion for softball. We have had a great season with some very spectacular highlights. The most memorable
being a triple play in one of our afternoon games – tagged the runner forced to second, played first for the out
and then home to tag the runner trying to score. It is always a challenge with teenagers to maintain their focus
but their desire for fun is always upmost to us all. Thanks for a fun and enjoyable season.
Emily Cameron
Emily has had a mixed season breaking her wrist in the very early start of the season and then with forfeits she
has not seen the diamond as much as she would have desired. Despite this Emily has shown a that with more
game time and training she has a great skill level that will only grow and highlight her true strengths. Thanks Emily
for your contribution this season.
Nat Wishewan
Nat has a very keen spirit for her softball applying herself with dedication and vigor at both training and in every
game. Keen to play as much has she can has shown great improvements in her game. Thanks Nat for your support
and commitment.
Sarah Greenwood
Sarah is very talented pitcher in our team. This season we have seen her develop this talent with rewards coming
from her dedication to further developing and training. At the resumption of the season in Feb this year we as a
team were impressed with the improvements. A very focused and talented young softballer who will be rewarded
for her dedication. Thanks Sarah for your commitment.
Isa Ruiz
Isa as always just a little dynamo, with energy to burn. Has again impressed us with her speed and sneaky
strength in batting. A very versatile player that can be utilised in either the infield or outfield and has served us
well in both this season. Thanks squeaker for your magnetic smile and the effort to continue and improve.
Chelsea Lolesio
Chelsea is a powerhouse. A very accomplished and dynamic batter who with what seems little effort pounds the
ball. Rewarding herself and the team with some blistering home runs. She also serves us well with a sure glove at
first base and is very accommodating by playing other positions with the same dedication. Thanks Chels for your
companionship, dedication and most of all your happy green smile.
Marissa Eldridge
Oh dear our little miss keen this seaon has unfortunately suffered a minor injury that we have had to encompass
so that she could make the National Championships. Even so as only we would expect her strengths in the game
are always impressive. Marissa like all Eldridges has a high expectation of her performance and as such puts 100%
at all times. A very impressive player that adds great depth and strength to our team. Thanks Bulger for all the can
I play requests. And that is still a no to pitcher.
Alice Palmer
Alice is another greatly talented player within our team. A very accomplished pitcher with the great ability to
perform to a high standard in most positions. A very strong and penetrating batter who seeks high rewards from
her performance and shows great distress when this is not achieved. Thanks for joining Suthie this year Alice you
are a great companion and team member.
Jen Ruiz
Jen has had a troubled season through which she has worked hard to regain her brilliant and powerful batting
ability. From her dedication she has been rewarded with the return of her true ability in this area. Another very
strong and talented fielder who provides great depth in our fielding plus a very positive, supportive and
considerate member of our bench. Thanks Jen for your persistence and belief in yourself.
Brianna Williams
It was not long into the season when Brianna was nicknamed “Rocket”. A true testimony to her application to the
game. A very focused, keen and aggressive player who provides a positive dimension to the diamond. A look
when she throws that would intimidate the best. Rocket is a player that listens and focuses at both training and
on the diamond, a true quality that rewards any coach. Thanks Rocket for your determination.
Kieryn Vance
Kieryn has had a spectacular season as our rookie. A very focused player that does the very best of her ability and
has shown from this her passion to improve her softball skills. Has impressed us all with some very breath taking
catches and getting bat on ball to score RBI’s. A very good season Kieryn thank you for joining our team.
Brie McGovern
A player that has great strength and potential which will prevail along with the belief of this herself. Brie is a very
focused player who can display impressive skill levels in both fielding and batting. Our main catcher who delivers
a very strong base to our team and strong support to our pitchers from behind the plate. The continuation of her
passion to play will serve her well in strengthening her game sense plus patience and trust in the abilities and
strengths of her team members and herself. Thanks for sharing a cream egg Brie, I hope we get to share many
more.
To all the players and parents that go to make this team a big thank you.
To those that have assisted with coaching and scoring also I thank because it is all the little things that make it
easier.
I hope everyone has enjoyed their season of softball with Suthie and continue to play in seasons to come.
I look forward to seeing you all next season with new challenges to embrace.
Have a great winter.
Margo
We like to think of this as our “development” year.
Pennant B
At the start of the season, the Suthie Pen B team looked a little worse for wear. Thankfully, after a quick email
out to other members of the club, we had a fantastic bunch of people come together to play. The mix of ages and
experience gave us a good foundation for a fun season.
The Pen B girls showed great commitment throughout the season and the improvement shown, particularly in
our first time players, was reflected in the score lines. Although we didn’t win too many games, we held our own
and it was normally only one innings doing the damage.
Thank you to Toni, Mandy and Sue for answering the call for players, we hope you enjoyed playing as much as we
enjoyed having you on team. See you next year.
Thank you also to Karyn and Andy for scoring for us...Legends!
Division 3 (Under 19s)
ability.
To the parents that show their support to this team and Sutherland I also say thanks.
A special thank you to Leonie, who not only scores, but provides me with much moral support.
I would also like to thank those players from our under 16’s team who played throughout the season and hoped
Division 2
This season we decided to enter a Division 2 team to allow some of our senior players the opportunity to play
softball and our younger players the opportunity to enjoy another game of softball. To that end the initiative
