Issue No 5\Thursday 29 March 2012
On Wednesday 18 April, in the 1 st week of Term 2, our Middle School (Years 7 – 9) Parent -
Teacher interviews are scheduled in the CM Wood Centre, from 4 - 8pm. I look forward to
personally greeting all parents/guardians who attend the interviews to discuss the progress
of their Middle School daughters. I advise Middle School parents that their daughter’s
Interim Reports will become available online through the parent portal this Friday 30
March and that from then until 11am on Wednesday 18 April they can make interview
times with their daughter’s subject teachers through the same online portal. Staff will have
indicated through the interim reports whether an interview is requested, but parents may
make interview times whether an indication is given for the need of an interview or not.
Two Matters of Concern
There are two matters that I would like to alert all secondary families to:
The first of these is that I have become aware that the laws relating to the supply of
alcohol to people under the age of 18 have recently changed in Victoria, and I would
suggest that any parents who are considering hosting a party for teenagers either at home
or at any other private or public venue should consider the extent to which they could be
held responsible if alcohol is available/supplied as follows:
The Victorian Government has passed the Liquor Control Reform Amendment Act 2011.
This Act makes it an offence under the Liquor Control Reform Act 1998 for a person to
supply alcohol to a minor (a person under the age of 18 years) in a private home without
parental consent.
This will help parents feel more assured when their children are visiting friends’ houses
that they are not drinking alcoholic beverages without their knowledge. From 1 November
2011, any person who supplies alcohol to a minor without a parent’s consent could be
subject to the same penalty faced by licensees who supply alcohol to minors in licensed
venues – a maximum fine of more than $7000.
This information is available to parents through the Supplying alcohol to minors in a private
home fact sheet (PDF, 232 KB). An information sheet is attached to this newsletter.
The second matter that I wish to alert all families to is the School’s set of rules/guidelines
in relation to what are appropriate dress standards for excursions when School Uniform is
not required. The following extract is taken from our Handbooks:
“On rare occasions there may be a scheduled “free dress day” or an excursion where
parents/guardians are advised that their daughter/son may wear casual clothes. On such
days it is requested that parents pay particular attention to their daughter’s/son’s attire.
Again the principle of taking pride in one’s appearance applies. Shorts/dresses or skirts that
are too short or jeans that are low slung are not acceptable and nor are any clothes that
will expose a bare midriff or bare shoulders. Sensible footwear is always a must and thongs
are not acceptable on any occasion. If a student is deemed to be dressed inappropriately
