LEXINGT ON
A spectacular large oil painting of a Russian team of four horses in a snowstorm, by HTA’s
star Polish painter Zenon Aniszewski, brought a bid of $10,000 from a Dutch patron and
topped the Silver Anniversary art auction that HTA uses to fund its college scholarship
fund. The painting, which did not arrive in time for inclusion in the printed catalogue but
was carried on HTA’s Web site, drew immediate and enthusiastic attention at the Red Mile.
Done with an entirely different approach than Aniszewski’s customary and hugely popular
action watercolors and oils of harness racing action, the painting had a Renaissance master’s
touch, and the four horse’s heads and bodies were painted classically and beautifully. The
winning bidder, in a spirited auction, was D. Post of Holland.
Aniszewski again dominated the painting section of the show, a second oil of harness action
bringing $4,000, two others selling for $2,700 and $2,500, and all ten of his paintings bringing
more than $1,000. HTA’s brilliant woodcarver, Wyoming cowboy John Kittelson, was,
as usual, the king of other media, his three superb woodcarvings of horses, drivers and
sulkies bringing $7,500, $5,000 and $4,500.
In all, 136 works of art were sold for $135,675, an average of $997.61.
Judging of this year’s competition produced a different view of the work than popular
response. First prize winner in the painting category was a beautiful oil by the Montreal
artist Alyson Champ, a popular regular contributor to the HTA show. Awarded the Best in
Show painting, it brought $900 at auction. In Sculpture and Other Media, a large and
impressive bronze by sculptress Catherine Wagner of a trotter in full flight was judged Best
in Show, and it sold for $2,700.
Other winners in the painting category, all of which received Awards of Special Excellence,
were:
