as student keynote speaker; McAllister (Mac) Nelson, welcome address; and Daniel Lorett, closing remarks. Susie will receive her Associate of Arts degree in human services.
Mac will receive his Associate of Arts degree in liberal arts. Daniel is graduating with an Associate of Applied Science in respiratory therapy.
Karon (Susie) Yocum spent over 25 years as an ironworker until congestive heart failure
changed her life. In 2003, following heart valve replacement surgery, she held various jobs
including working at a convenience store, frying donuts and a paper route. “I wanted to give
back to the community, I wanted to help people,” recalls Susie. That’s when she enrolled at San
Juan College and found her niche in social work.
Susie has completed her degree requirements for her Associate of Arts in human services.
She will enroll at New Mexico Highlands University this fall where she plans to earn her bachelor’s
degree in social work. Along with working as a substance abuse and life skills facilitator at <strong>Focus</strong>
Solutions Counseling, she has held a work study position in the college’s Enrollment Services
department for the last four semesters, and worked as a certified peer educator for the EDGE
program, where she mentors students who are new to campus. She also found time to help
others, serving as a note-taker for Disability Services. She is no doubt an inspiration to others,
by overcoming significant personal challenges to return to school and complete her degree. She
gives credit to the support of her family – including seven brothers and sisters, her dad and
stepmom, Don and Sue Yocum, as well as her mother, Helen Shelton, who has since passed away.
McAllister (Mac) Nelson spent his first year at San Juan College commuting back and
forth from Naschitti, driving two and one half hours every day. He is a 2009 graduate of Navajo
Preparatory School.
Mac will receive his Associate of Arts degree in liberal arts. He plans to transfer to the
University of New Mexico in the fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and eventually
a master’s degree in psychology. He wants to follow in his dad’s footsteps, working with teens as
a drug and substance abuse counselor or therapist.
Mac is currently a tutor in the Student Success Center, a SJC student ambassador, AISES club
member and a past president of the SJC Out Club. He is active in the SJC Native American Center,
helping with the Pow Wow and as a speaker for the Cultural Immersion program. He helped
organize the Spring-A-Paloosza and volunteers his time with campus events such as movie
nights, and fundraisers for various campus clubs. His parents are Mable and Leroy Nelson.
McAllister (Mac) Nelson
Before coming to San Juan College, Daniel Lorett attended New Mexico Highlands
University and was running his family’s business. He had a strong interest in health care. As a
child with asthma, he had first-hand experience with the positive impact a respiratory therapist
has with patients. He appreciates that respiratory therapy is involved in critical care and that
there are many career opportunities along that path.
He is one of the first graduates of the new Associate of Applied Science in respiratory
therapy program, where he has maintained an “A” in all his respiratory therapy courses and
has been a class ambassador for the last three semesters. He was recently approved for
membership in the Lambda Beta Honor Society for Respiratory Care.
Following graduation, he will apply to the University of Arizona and then apply for medical
school where he eventually hopes to become an anesthesiologist. Daniel is the son of Don and
Aleida Rios, BP America Vice President of Operations,
to Deliver Graduation Keynote Address
Aleida Rios, BP America Vice President of Operations,
North America Gas Region, will be the keynote speaker
at San Juan College’s graduation ceremonies. Rios was
born in Mexico and raised in Houston. She graduated
from Texas A&M University with a Chemical Engineering
degree in 1991.
As the Vice President of Operations for the North
America Gas Region, she is accountable for the safe,
reliable and efficient operations for all BP North American
gas operated assets. This includes operations in seven
states – nine operating centers and four gas plants with
over 12,000 operated wells.
BP, through its legacy companies, has a long history
of producing natural gas in the San Juan Basin, straddling
northwest New Mexico and southwest Colorado. The San
Juan Basin produces approximately 3.5 billion cubic feet
per day of natural gas from conventional sandstones and
This year’s San Juan College commencement will
see double the number of honor graduates
crossing the stage to receive their diplomas. This
is an increase from 28 in 2011 to 56 in <strong>2012</strong>.
Over the last seven years, the number of honors
program graduates has grown from one in 2005 to 56
in <strong>2012</strong>. Eight years ago, there were approximately 30
honors students enrolled in San Juan College honors
courses. Over the last three semesters, that number has
increased to an average of 300 students per semester.
“The implications of this growth are significant, not
only for honors students, but for San Juan College and
the community,” explains Dr. David Bramhall, SJC honors
program coordinator. “A graduate, who has received an
enriched education and, more importantly, has learned
that he/she is capable of achieving more than they ever
imagined, will undoubtedly be more successful in their
chosen career. In turn, their contributions play a vital role
in improving the quality of our community.”
san juan college communicator I May/June <strong>2012</strong> I www.sanjuancollege.edu
Graduation is definitely one of the greatest days of
the year. For me, each graduation provides an “Ah ha
moment.” Seeing the colorful wave of students smiling while
filing in one-by-one to their places, families and friends
waving, cheering – these expressions of joy represent the
visible evidence of success.
Commencement serves as an opportunity to celebrate
the accomplishments of our students. It’s a time to be proud
that we’ve all worked together and made a commitment
to help one of our own achieve a dream and accomplish
a milestone. It’s one more step toward building a strong
foundation for the future. That’s exactly what our new service
theme conveys – Your Dream. Your Future. Our <strong>Focus</strong>.
I’m proud to have been a part of an institution that is made
up of a dedicated faculty and staff who take this to heart,
and put our students’ success in the forefront.
As you listen to our student speakers, you’ll hear how
their stories represent the journeys all our students have
traveled to reach their own individual success. For many, this
is just the beginning – maybe the launch of a new career or
an opportunity to discover a second one. Whatever the case,
each graduate will no doubt have a positive effect on our
community and the lives they touch as they move forward in
the next step of their journey.
unconventional coal-bed methane reservoirs – enough
gas to supply approximately 3 million US households in
consumption. BP has nearly 200 people working in the
Farmington operations and is the third largest natural
gas producer in New Mexico.
Throughout her 20 year career at BP, Rios has
held numerous wide ranging roles in various leadership
capacities including previous operations and engineering
roles in both the Gulf of Mexico and North America Gas.
Rios most recently held the position of Area Operations
Manager – Eastern with North America Gas, and prior
to this role, she worked in London as the Executive
Assistant to the Head of Safety and Operational Risk.
Rios is married and has three young sons. She
enjoys everything her “boys” do, as well as yoga and
quiet time with a good book.
<strong>2012</strong> SJC Honors <strong>Graduates</strong> Double
“The San Juan College Honors Program is unique,”
adds Dr. John Burris, SJC honors program co-coordinator.
“We are building a program that could be recognized as
the model for community college honors programs.”
Two years ago, the program expanded to include
a professional track for students in the Schools of
Energy, Health Sciences and Trades and Technology. The
honors courses of study were customized to the specific
disciplines. Students are provided with an opportunity to
gain an in depth skill set and demonstrate their level of
achievement.
The growth of the honors program would not be
possible without the generosity of the Merrion Oil and Gas
Foundation. In 2011, they pledged $25,000 annually, over
the next five years through the San Juan College Foundation
to benefit the honors program. Funds will be utilized for
honors scholarships, speakers and educational trips.
“It is rare when something exceeds my expectations,
As our graduates move forward in their journey, we
continue to do the work behind the scenes that ensures
we are serving the needs of our students and community.
With our 10 strategic goals having been determined, we are
now in the process of developing our strategic plan. The
Strategic Services committee will take the input that was
received from the college and community and connect their
feedback with the 10 goals to develop the final plan.
We also recently held an open house inviting input
and feedback from both the college and community
regarding our Facility Master plan. From parking to student
housing, proposed concepts for campus building and site
improvements were presented. If you were unable to attend,
I invite you to visit our website, where you can view the plan
and give us your ideas.
Our board has selected Dr. Toni Pendergrass to serve
as your college’s next president. Please join me in welcoming
her. I know she will take as much pride as I have in serving
such a great institution. With an inclusive leadership style, a
student focused philosophy and a true passion for the local
community, I am confident she will continue guiding San Juan
College toward excellence.
and the San Juan College Honors program does,” says T.
Greg Merrion, president of Merrion Oil and Gas.
In addition to growth in numbers, the quality of the
program is increasing. Honors students who achieve
a 3.6 GPA and complete 18 hours of honors classes or
more are now recognized as Merrion Master Scholars
with their names engraved on a plaque in the Learning
Commons just outside the library. In this graduation
class, 14 honors graduates received this recognition.
“It’s awesome to have the opportunity to give back to
San Juan College, an institution that has not only made a
difference for me and my family, but has had a major impact
on the future of our community,” adds Merrion.
Students Nominated for
All-USA Academic Team
San Juan College students Jayme Wilson and Gabriel Kropf
were recognized for their nomination to the <strong>2012</strong> New
Mexico All-State and All-USA Academic Teams on Community
College Day during the recent legislative session in Santa Fe.
Aztec native, Jayme Wilson, will graduate in the spring of
2013 with an Associate of Science degree in pre-medical science.
Jayme plans to enroll at the University of New Mexico to
earn her bachelor’s degree in biology, then apply to medical
school where she hopes to become a doctor and return to
practice medicine in the Four Corners area.
Jayme Wilson
“The faculty of San Juan College have had an amazing impact
on me,” says Jayme. “Whether you are a mom, a wife, an employee,
or regardless of your circumstances, SJC faculty will help
you achieve your goals.”
A homeschool student, Gabriel Kropf earned his GED through
San Juan College before beginning his college degree program.
He will graduate from SJC in the fall of <strong>2012</strong> with three Associates
of Science degrees in mathematics, physics, as well as in
engineering. He has begun the process of applying to various
schools across the United States including various Ivy League
schools. He hopes to earn his doctorate degree in mathematics
or physics and eventually work in a research facility.
“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the dedication of
the faculty at San Juan College,” says Gabriel. “They have been
Gabriel Kropf
instrumental in helping me see how much I love to learn.”
Sponsored by USA Today and in partnership with Follet Higher Education Group, the
Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, the Coca-Cola Foundation, the American Association of Community
Colleges and Phi Theta Kappa, this program recognizes exceptional students at the
nation’s community colleges. All-USA State Academic Team members are selected from those
chosen for state honors.
Both students were nominated for the All-State and All-USA Academic Team by San Juan
College’s Office of the President. In addition to evaluating outstanding classroom achievement,
judges also consider how the students apply their academic, intellectual or leadership
skills to benefit their campus and community.
New School of Energy
Program Meets
Community Needs
Randy Pacheco, dean of San Juan College’s School of Energy (SOE), had a vision
to create a work-friendly certificate/degree program. The result is a new program
called Advanced Petroleum Production Operation, which the SOE will offer this fall.
It’s the next level of training from what was previously offered in the Natural Gas
Compression and Lease Operator programs. (The latter is now known as Fundamentals of
Petroleum Production Operations).
“This new certificate/degree is for the working employee who already has time invested
with a company and can’t afford to quit and go back to school,” explains Pacheco. “The program
is flexible but achievable for workers who want to take the next step in becoming more
informed and safer employees.”
“Making time for that next step pays off,” continues Lisa Martin, BP project coordinator
for the School of Energy. “Energy companies whose employees participate in School of
Energy programs find their workforce expands their skill base, while preparing them for the
next level.”
The energy industry is changing, and employers are looking at ways to invest, not
only in their employees, but in their companies’ future. That means partnering with colleges,
such as SJC’s School of Energy, where potential employees have been well trained, or where
current employees can receive professional development to become more promotable, knowledgeable
and safer workers.
The new program offers some of the same classes that are in the SOE’s other two
degree programs, but on a different schedule. A one half-credit class is offered every
Thursday. Those classes, along with required electives, give students flexibility to achieve their
certificate or degree in their own time frame.
People don’t have to apply and be accepted into the new program as they do for the
Natural Gas Compression and Fundamentals of Petroleum Production Operations programs.
“These programs are really catching the eye of the energy industry,” Martin says.
McNeal’s Marvelous Medicine Show is About to Begin
With a natural flair for drawing a crowd, Violet McNeal
was one of only a handful of women in business. As
“Princess Lotus Blossom” she sold an astonishing array
of cures; as Violet, hers was a dynamic voice in the
“advertising as entertainment” style of marketing that
prevails today.
Anthropologist, storyteller, magician, actor and teacher,
Diana Enright is currently researching the voice of women in
the medicine show/side show/performance art of magic field
“The on-campus studio provides students with an
opportunity to use the skills learned in the classroom in an
actual news studio setting,” explains Renner. “It gives them
real-world experience, from deadlines to production, and
helps them develop the professionalism that is needed to
pursue a career in the media field.”
Along with the news set, the green screen studio is also
used by students throughout the semester for class projects,
giving them an opportunity to create high end special effects.
Students also can utilize the studio for other class projects.
Vaughan adds that the professionalism and various levels
of experience that students gain are also advantageous
to his company. “We have the benefit of being able to recruit
interns and potential employees who have well developed
on-air and production skills.”
in the Communications graduate program at the University
of New Mexico.
The Chautauqua performances are free and sponsored by
the New Mexico Humanities Council; San Juan College School
Majestic Media publishes Majestic Living Magazine,
the weekly Tri-City Tribune Newspaper, Basin Resources
“The short stories in the seven-minute newscast lead
says. “It gives people a daily shot of breaking news that our
