Career Studies In Home Bases
on pg 2)
High school, college, and future career plans are all being
introduced and discussed during our home base/advisory period
first hour during January and February. The purpose of these career
lessons is to motivate and engage students in taking control of their
own lives by being informed about what to expect during their
future educational years. To start off, all students will be exploring
different areas:
“Who Am I?”---6th grade
“Where Am I Going?”---7th grade
“How Do I Get There?”---8th grade
Most of these lessons will be done during home base/advisory first
hour throughout the next couple months. By the time you read this,
every student will have taken a career inventory and explored
possible future careers using the computer lab. This was completed
through all social studies classes allowing us more time to focus on
this part of the program. By 8th Thishoices on
Thank you, Mrs.
Site Council Thanks Bernier, for Don being Regole
Site Council has been busy this year. They approved a marketing
campaign created by Don Regole of Regole Design Inc who generously
donated his time to design a new logo and promotional material for our
school. He is the husband of Mrs. Regole who has been a seventh and
eighth grade language arts teacher here for eleven years. There will be
four different flyers getting the word out promoting Secrist Middle
School. Thank you, Mr. & Mrs. Regole! Mr. Regole also recommended the
phrase: Secrist-The SMART Choice to help identify out school. His
professional work is a welcome change. Watch your mail box to see the
new promotional campaign and make sure to tell your friends what
Secrist offers students and families.
Also, Site Council approved to pay for another track coach. Track is one
sport that everyone can participate in (as long as grades and citizenship
are passing); the practices and meets can get very hectic so another
adult will assist. Our next meeting is scheduled for Wed., Feb. 18th such a great home
This includes not only specific classes, but also, clubs, sports, &
volunteer activities. All of these help students figure out what exactly
they are interested in, and may lead them to a more enjoyable future.
Tuesday, January 20 th , in conjunction with the Secrist PTA, all TUSD high
schools were invited to share what they have to offer at each of their
individual schools. Because TUSD is a large district, there are many
choices on where and what our students will learn. All students must
complete specific high school graduation requirements, but when it
comes to choosing electives, there are many choices offered; our
students need to know what’s available to meet their needs best.
Thank you, Mrs. Bernier, for being such a great home base/advisory
leader and getting all of the career lessons on-line. Thank you, social
Check Out Daughters of the Night Series
Think you’ve read every book on Earth? You probably haven’t read this very unique series by
Lynne Ewing. Four girls who all possess a supernatural power: Vanessa can become invisible,
Catty can travel back in time, Serena can read your mind, and Jimena gets premonitions. What do
these young teenagers do when they find out they’re really goddesses of the moon and have to
protect the world from the evil Atrox and its followers? These books are great for those readers
interested in fantasy and supernatural. All the books in the series are: Goddess of the Night, Into
the Cold Fire, Night Shade , The Secret Scroll, The Sacrifice, The Lost One, Moon Demon,
Possession, The Choice, The Talisman, The Prophecy, The Becoming and The Last Eclipse.
The boys’ volleyball team this year was phenomenal. The roster for the team was: Matt Fridley, Matt
Rogers, Michael Para, Miguel Thomas, Ryan Perez, Ryan Shalaty, Nick Shalaty, Bennet Shulkin, Sam
Huber, Emilio Guiterrez, Richie Foitik, Ramon, Billy Markowski, Johnny Power, Kyle Varley, Nate, Triston
Lightener and Zack Tumes. The boys’ volleyball teams’ record for the season was 4-3 4 wins and 3 losses.
But they lost their first playoff game and ended their season. The coach who is greatly appreciated for
this is Mr. Noirot, a technology teacher here at Secrist. You wouldn’t think that a technology teacher
would teach volleyball but because of Mr. Noirot, Secrist had an excellent season. Thank you Mr. Noirot!
Creative Mrs. Wiggins
If you don’t know her, Mrs. Wiggins is
Secrists’ Art teacher. We authors of this
article were in her class in sixth grade;
we both agree that she is an amazing
teacher and artist. She teaches Secrist
students a lot of interesting things
about art such as: the basics of drawing
figures, art composition and color
combination.
We wanted to know what students are
learning in her class so that students
who are interested in art will know what
lies ahead. Her class would be a good
class if you’re a beginner. For 6th
graders, Mrs. Wiggin’s class is an
opportunity to learn basic art, and for
7th and 8th it is an opportunity to learn
more skills and produce more art.
Did you know Mrs. Wiggins has had
Twilight
Movie,
Suspenseful
Don’t know what
Twilight is? Ask a
teenager and we
guarantee they’ll
know everything
about it. The muchanticipated
movie
was based on
Stephanie Meyer’s
2005 novel. This
thrilling story is
about a young 17year
old girl named
Bella who moves to
the town of Forks,
expecting to hate it
several art exhibits at the U of A and
designed the first mascot for Catalina
Foothills High School? Regarding her
personal life, she once met Stevie
Wonder, which she said was an exciting
experience.
In class, she and her students produced
artwork for our school’s drama class
productions. Mrs. Wiggins hopes to get
Secrist art work exhibited in the Miller-
Golf Links Library. She wants to give her
classes new experiences every year and
appreciates her students’ hard work,
dedication and commitment to her
class.. She said, “Our young students
are good, hard working students that
stay focused. Who knows, someone
from Secrist may one day have their art
work in a museum or art book.”
by Marcus Holt & James Maki
as soon as she
arrives. She does
hate it until she
meets the very
beautiful and
alluring Edward
Cullen who just
happens to be a
vampire!
The movie arrived
in theaters this past
November, making
well past its
expectations in the
opening weekend.
Despite the fact
that the movie is
not entirely the
same as the book,
it is still filled with
suspense, heartthrobbing
action,
and romance. This
movie is rated PG-
13 and is great for
all the vampire
loving teenage girls
and guys out there.
So hurry to the
theaters and see
this very exciting
movie! Or catch
soon.
So Long, Mr. Ketcham
Mr. Ketcham has been a student teacher for Mrs. Richards since
the beginning of the year. He finished his time at Secrist so now
he is only substituting. After being exposed to Mrs. Richards’
teaching style, he is now looking forward to teaching middle
school. After subbing for Gridley and Secrist, he really wants to
teach at a school where there are the same type of students as
Secrist enrolls. Mr. Ketcham really likes the staff and
administration here. Just by student teaching with Mrs. Richards,
he has learned a lot from her; she is very inspirational to him.
Besides teaching, Mr. Ketcham enjoys teaching girls’ soccer. He is
the JV soccer coach for Sabino, plus he coaches the Tanque Verde
Soccer Club. His favorite foods include: lasagna, Italian food,
steak, and Mexican food. Mr. Ketcham will be a great teacher.
Xerox Helps Americans Say Thanks
Girls’ Basketball
This years in girls’ basketball proved that all of the team
members had perseverance and determination in giving their
hardest in this season. In almost every game the team gave
100% of their heart and showed their enjoyment of the game.
Mr. Jensen, their basketball coach, knew all along that the girls
could make a team because of their willingness to learn and
listen how to make a better team.
Mr. Freed, the assistant coach, gave the team confidence and a
reason to keep playing. He always acknowledged when
members did the right things and had a great way of
correcting the team when needed. Overall, the end of the
season turned out to have more losses than wins, and some of
the players felt they had failed the season, but they also had a
sense of accomplishment that they finished the whole season
without giving up. -–by Sierra
If you g o t o www.LetsSayThanks.com you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier
who is serving over seas You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services.
How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!! This is a great site. Please send a card. It is FREE
and it only takes a second. There are many different designs to choose from. Some of our students already sent their card and
thanks in their Home Base classes. Won’t you join us and do the same?
Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these? Our guys and gals over there need to know we are behind
them... –Thank you for this submission, Kendra Cranwell
Out-of- this- world P. E. Outdoors
Mr. Rojas is overjoyed with the new, stupendous P.E. Outdoors class.
They do everything from hiking Marshall Gulch to Rocks and Ropes;
sometimes they even go bike riding! The students have a great time
learning about camping, backpacking, rock climbing, and how to be
prepared as a backpacker or hiker. At Rocks and Ropes they climbed
for three hours and Marshall Gulch was a two hour activity. The
beauty of nature and physical exercise make the new P.E. Outdoors
an outstanding, enjoyable class. Thanks, Mr. Rojas. --Ashleigh Ishikawa
