Meiissa McKnight knows vhere she
will be on Oct. 2at the polling
stationWhether her classmates will be
oining her there this upcoming provin-
cial election day isn’t so clear. At least,
McKnight isn’t counting on company.
"In their view, they don’t have the
time," McKnight said of many fellow
/oung adults. She is disappointed to
admit it.
"We’re in a democratic society," she
said. "We have a privilege to vote."
McKnight also believes that few young
people vote due to a lack of interest stem-
ming from a lack of education. She feels
that the government does not do enough
"o encourage young people to vote.
Sheila Bell agrees.
Bell, a teaclier of Political Science at
Durham College, believes it all goes back
to the .education system, where not
enough time is spent in elementary and
>econdary schools to promote political
interest.
Like McKnight, Bell feels-it is impor-
tant for young people to take advantage
of the power available to them.
"We all have a responsibility to exer-
cise our right to vote," said Bell. "If we
don’t we are hurting ourselves."
NDP candidate Dan Edwards hopes his
campaign for MPP of the Whitby/Ajax
riding will renew some much-needed
attention from youth. Edwards, 20, a Law
and Security Administration student, is
confident that drawing from his own
experiences to build his campaign platform
will make him more identifiable
with voters, especially those his age who
can share similar stories of high school
without a football team and classrooms
packed with students.
"I want education to be better because
I’ve lived through an education system
that was going down the tubes," he says.
Edwards hopes that connecting to
the political process and young people."
Since its inception 10 years ago, Rock
the Vote has recruited over three million
new young voters, mostly using youth-
led street teams to enlist voters at con-
certs, campuses and coffee sliops.
Pendergast encourages Canada to.fol
low suit.
"If politics is something that is outside
of their culture, chances are they won’t
engage in it," she says.
"Show them the relevance in theii
own world."
But even without one-on-one voter
recruitment for young people, voting is
young people like himself may give them still easy to do. Donald Davidson hopes
a newfound interest in politics. He wants
young people to realize that, "politics are
affecting them directly."
That is what Elections Ontario is trying
to do, following a slogan of, "When you
don’t vote, you let others speak for you."
Their advertisements, which aim to ignite
voter interest, have been appearing as
posters and television
commercials. However,
their campaign is aimed
at the general public, not
specifically at young peo-
ple.
In the U.S., a non-prof-
it, non-partisan organiza-
tion called Rock the Vote
is determined to engage
young people in the polit-
ical process. They incor-
porate youth culture such
’as actors, musicians and
athletes and focus in on
youth-related issues of free speech, envi-
ronment and education. And it’s work-
ing.
"We play on the field where young
people are and using a medium that
attracts them/’ Heidi Pendergast, voter
registration co-ordinator, said in an inter-
view, "Politics isn’t looked at as some-
thing that is cool, but politics affects the
air we breathe, the music we buy, and
what we are and are not allowed to say.
Rock the Vote bridges that gap between
We have a
responsibility to
exercise our right
to vote. If we don’t
we are hurting our-
selves
young people realize just how easy it is,
"People get the government they
deserve," says Davidson, Returning
Officer for the Oshawa constituency.
"They have no right to complain about a
government if they didn’t vote in the
election."
, With advance polls set up at conve-
nient locations like the
Oshawa Centre, anc
hours running from 9
a.m. to 8 p.jn., voting
could not be simpler.
Eligible voters (those
18 years of age or oldei
who are a Canadian citi-
zen and resident of an
Ontario electoral district)
should receive a Notice ofj
______ mail informing them of
Sheila Bell the polling station in
their area. The next step is
to bring the card to the polling station on
Oct. 2 or to an advance poll.
Those living away from home can vote
by proxy, designating another to vote on
their behalf. If an eligible voter does not
