Jeepers Creepers 2 more for the mainstream crowd By Lindsay La Fraugh Chronicle Staff The combination of high school football players and cheerleaders trapped in the middle of nowhere and blood and guts will usually fulfill till* average expecta- tions of someone watching a horror movie. An exception to tins standard is tlie recent- ly released movie from MGM, Jcepcrs Creepers 2. Jeepers Creepers 2 revolves around a monster that comes to feed on humans for 23 days every 23 years. After seeing the original movie wlicn it came out in 2001, 1 felt it was poor compared to the other movies in its genre that came out that year Tike The Others, 13 Ghosts and Sessions 9. These other movies seemed to bring a more convincing and realistic scare. The second Jeepers Creepers movie was not only just as disappointing and unsatisfying as the first, it was worse. In the second film it seemed as though the direc- tor and writers were trying to cater to the main stream audience. The sequel was less-graph- ic than the original which contained scenes where the monster, who appears to be a deformed man with large wings, licks and sews together corpses. The second film showed the monster kill only a few characters and the rest were simply flown away to leave what happens up to your imagination. The original movie con- tributed to making the second more disappointing because the movie and story was more predictable. Jeepers Creepers 2 seemed to just show what the general public wants to see instead of what the monster character in the story would actually do. Laughter ensued in the theatre more than shrieks and screams because many of the situations the charac- nights, this Battle of the Bands is going to be run through the Student Association. By the middle of this movie it wasn’t hard to notice others in the theatre making comments about its poor quality and almost everyone in the theatre got up to take a washroom break or get more snacks. This is hardly the behaviour of an audience that Is satisfied with the movie they arc watching. No one seemed to mind missing so called cru- cial parts of this film for more important things sucli as popcorn and Tdotsic Rolls. The familiar wide-open ending of the movie lets us know that there will indeed be a Jeepers Creepers 3 to look forward to in the next few years. These movies, which were not so great to begin witli, arc on a downward spiral and I am not going down with them. I will avoid them at all costs. Bands still needed for wars By Christine Amorlnl Chronicle Stall The Student Association is looking for bands to take part in its Battle of the Bands. Separate from Bandwars that’s presented on Saturday the Student Centre, and a $50 fee is charged to take care of lights and sound. Cheap chicken wings and beer By Amy Weeks Chronicle Stall Chicken wings. Everybody loves them, Everybody can afford them. Yes. Everybody. They don’t need to be expensive, if you know where to look and even more Importantly, when. With so many restaurants, pubs and bars in the Durham area to choose from, going out for wings is not only affordable, but convenient as well. On Simcoe Street you’ll so many places, you can Sass nd a deal on wings every day of the week. Monday is two pounds of wings for the price of one at Mickey Finn’s Sports Cafe located at 1050 Simcoe St. N. Tuesday through Friday The Otter & Firkin at 926 Simcoe St. N. sells wings for 40 cents each from 4 to 11, and 30 cents all day Sunday and Monday. Sunday is also a great day to buy beer since it’s only $3.75 for domestic draft’ and $3.25 for any domestic bottled beer. Wednesday, and Monday, go to Jack’s Fillin’ Station located at 948 Simcoe St. N. for half price wings, only $3.99 per pound. Thursday, as well as Wednesday, Excuses Dining Lounge at 504 Sirncoc St. S, sells the best wings dirt- cheap. The wings arc big and the honey garlic sauce rocks. The best part is they’re only $2.49 per pound. Friday, don’t forget The Otter & Firkin sclTs their wings for only 40 cents each. I’m sure you’ve noticed that Monday and Wednesday arc the hot nights for cheap chicken wings. One great place to go those days is RodMann’s located at 2080 Wentworth St. in Whitby. Wings are cheap every night of the week but they’re sold for half price on Monday and Wednesday. A smafl order is $3.47 and a large order is only $5.97. RodMann’s cook, Whitney Saint Vil, prepares all the flavours of wings and more unusual kinds like Cajun and Caribbean Jerk. Lastly, the most popular place to get cheap wings is at Don Cherry’s, which has sev- eral locations. Mondays, buy one pound of wings and get the second pound half price, Tuesday buy the first pound at regular price and get the second pound for $2.00 and Wednesday a pitcher of beer and two pounds of wings is sold as a package for only $23.00.
Rais ed Fist invad es O shawa By Rachel Birss Chronicle Staff The Swedes arc invading, and Canadian haidcore fans couldn’t be happier. Raised Fist, one of Sweden’s most talked-aboul hardcore bands, will be playing at The Dungeon on Oct. 3 with local favourites Protest the Hero. The show is part of the quin- tet’s second (our of Canada, and so far it lias been an all- out assault of hardcore metal meets punk. The tour is liitting 28 Canadian cities from Carleton, Quc. to Vancouver, B.C. in only 37 days. And unlike most bands wlio tour Canada, Raised Fist will be playing in a lot of small cities. "We want to go everywhere," said front man Alexander Hagman. The band loves touring, even though it Is relatively new to them. For the first seven years they were together Raised Fist didn’t tour at all, which has helped (hem In the long run. "We didn’t burn ourselves out in the early years," said Hagman. But in the last three years they have made up for lost time with Intense touring to bring their hard-hitting sound world wide. And the current tour is to promote the band’s most hard-hitting album to date. With 11 songs clocking in at just over 35 minutes, it is actually one of their longer albums^ "The sound is much heavier," boasted Hagman when comparing this album to previous ones. "It is darker in a way, with a little less melody." A lot of the more Intricate music on this album is the result of a new way of writing, and the addition of a new guitarist. The one now responsi- ble for the second guitar in tlic band is Marco. "We’ve known him all our lives," said Hagman. So it made sense to him to ask Marco to take over guitar. With the addition of a new guitarist came a new way of writing. "Most of the music was written for two guitars," said Hagman. On previous albums everything was written for one guitar and (lie second guitar was added in the studio. The only thing tliat may overshadow the music of Raised Fist is the lyrics. Instead of the cryptic lyrics and lay- ered metaphor put out by most artiits who share this style. Raised Fist’s lyrics arc simple but powerful. According to Hagman, "when you arc angry you write the best lyrics." Hagman’s lyrics arc charged with political and personal insight about the things tliat piss him off the most. That’s Why, the album’s shortest song, rages against corporate ideals with lines like "We cannot play this game by their rules, we cannot provide them with the powerful tools", Wliile songs like the albums title track, Dedication, speak of the commercialization of music, and praise bands that have stayed true to music over money and exhibitionism, These values are prominent among bands signed to Epitaph records, Raised Fist’s North American label. Raised Fist’s last two albums have been released on Epitaph records in combination with the Epitaph-owned Burning Heart records. It Is rare that a band on a label as large as Epitaph comes to Oshawa. So crank the volume and get ready to mosh. Raised Rst Is on the way. DC trip to Stratford By Joseph Morion Chronicle Staff The Student Association is offering a trip on Oct. 7, to see Shakespeare’s classic comedy, the Taming of the Shrew at the Stratford Festival. Jackie Borosa, the co-ordina- tor of the trip and vice-president of University/College affairs, calls it "One of Shakespeare’s funniest plays." The Stratford Festival was created in the 1950s by jour- nalist Tom Patterson who feared the economic downfall of his hometown, Stratford, Ontario, and came up with an idea of a festival celebrating the works of William Shakespeare. Since then, the festival has expanded its reper- toire to include the works of Moliere, the ancient Greeks, and other great dramatists of the past, as well as modern playwrights such as Anton Chekhov, Tennessee Williams and others. Tickets can be purchased at the tuck shop on the second floor of the Student Centre for $25 as supplies last.
