Lords look sood in final stretch
By John Herron
Chronicle Staff
The Durham Lords baseball
club lost two games to the
No.l rated team in the CIBA
in a pair of non-conference
matchups on Wednesday,
Sept. 24,
The two losses to Brock
University arc meaningless in
the Ontario Conference
standings, where the Lords
hold top spot with a 10-2
record.
Although insignificant
towards conference stand-
ings, The Lords were looking
to send a message to Brock, as
well themselves, to show
they’re able to compete with
the best.
"These games are extreme-
ly important because it gives
us an idea of the type of com-
petition we’ll meet should we
make it to the nationals," said
first base coach John Carr.
The Lords got stomped In
the first game by an 8-6 score
but put up more of a fight in
the second game, before los-
ing 8-6.
Coach Carr put things into
perspective after the games by
stating that any team can
beat another on any given
"
day.
,
"We proved that we could
stay with these guys during
the second game, and things
could easily be different next
time," said Can.
Heading into the final
weekend of the season the
Lords were scheduled to play
a double-header in Ottawa
against Carteton on Saturday,
Sept. 27, and finished up at
home with another two
against Queen’s on Sunday.
Carlcton sits in the base-
ment of the Ontario confer-
ence with a 2-10 record. The
Lords had a good opportunity
to win botli games and
remain ahead of the
University of Ottawa in the
standings. Results will be
available In the next edition
of The Chronicle.
"Our thinking is that we
want to go out there this
weekend and take all four"
said third baseman Mark
Williamson.
Finishing in first place
allows tlie Lords to play at
home against the fourth-
place team, currently George
Brown College, Durham han-
dled GBC easily during their
season series, going 4-0
against them.
Should Durham drop to
second spot in the Ontario
Conference they would still
retain home-field advantage
for the semi-finals and face
the third- place team, some-
tiling that Carr believes to be
important.
"Finishing first or second is
extremely Important because
we play in our home park,"
said Carr.
"If we go to Kingston
where it’s only 200 feet to
right field anything can be a
home run and our great team
defence is taken away," added
Can.
The conference semi-finals
take place Oct. 4-5. Matchups
will be determined at the end
of regular season play.
The Lords lost the two game double-header.
Baseball coach important member of team
By John Herron
Chronicta Staff
He’s scouted ball-players
for the New York Yankees. He
currently scouts for the
Milwaukee Brewers. At
Durham College, he’s com-
piled an impressive record of
152 wins and 106 losses while
coaching the men’s baseball
team, the Lords.
However, Sam Dempster
will be the first to admit that
winning games and achieving
personal records takes a back
seat to coaching baseball and
being around the game he
loves.
"Just to be able to go on the
field and have an opportunity
to coach fine young men like
these guys is my greatest
accomplishment,"
The players aren’t the only
people on the team the veter-
an coach enjoys spending
time with,
"I’ve got four of the best
guys around to help coach the
team, they’re unbelievable,"
said Dempster.
He’s referring to Bob
Johnston, Greg Hannah, John
Can and Colin Dempster, the
assistant coaches for the
Lords.
Following in his father’s
footsteps, Colin pursued a
career in baseball by playing
two years of college ball in
’Alabama, and an additional
two years of university ball in
North Carolina,
"Character, being my own
person and standing up for
what I believe in are some of
the important things my dad
has taught me," said the
younger Dempster.
Dempster also teaches valu-
able lessons to his players.
LONG-TIME HEAD COACH: Sam Dempster watches along with his son Colin
Dempster as his players look for another win.
shortstop with the team said,
"Sam has taught me how to
field a ground ball really well,
so I’ve improved on that."
"I’ve also improved on my
hitting because he’s told me
to just relax and focus on the
ball and make a good swing."
Coaching a college base-
ball team also involves acting
as a part-time counselor on
road trips,
Coach Dempster is often
seen speaking with players
who may be experiencing
trouble with homesickness or
witli their studies.
Those who know Dempster
mention the coach’s incredi-
ble level of tolerance and his
uncanny sense of humour.
" Every moment with Sam
is a humorous moment
because he has a great sense of
humour and keeps everything
light on the bench, which
helps his players to relax even
when mistakes are made,"
said Assistant Coach Greg
Hannah.
During the 1999 National
Championships in St.
Catharines, Ont.,
Durham’s Athletic Director
(Ken Babcock) decided to
attend Durham’s game
against Laval. As Babcock
arrived he noticed that coach
Dempster was absent from the
dugout and positioned
behind the backstop.
The umpire officiating the
crucial contest had taken
exception to a comment
made by the usually mild-
mannered coach and. incon-
ceivably ejected Dempster
from the game.
When Babcock asked him
what happened, Dempster
told the confused Athletic
Director he had decided to
view tlie game from a differ-
ent vantage point to sec how
the umpire was doing.
All kidding aside, Babcock
believes Dempster will be a
permanent fixture with the
Lords for many seasons to
come. "Baseball at Durham
College is synonymous with
Sam Dempster," said Babcock.
"One day Sam will move on
but that is not something
we’re looking at right now."
Apart from his managerial
and coaching duties at
Durham College, the fiery
baseball guru has spent a great
deal of time and effort scout-
ing players for the New York
Yankees.
Chris Kemlo is one of the
most recent players recom-
mended to the Yankees by the
coach. He now plays A-ball for
one of their minor league
affiliates.
Kemlo, a talented young
pitcher from the Oshawa area
made a trip to the Lords home
park (Kinsman Stadium) last
year in an attempt to inspire
some of the aspiring pitchers
on the staff.
"It was really niqe to see
him come out here last year
and share some of his experi-
ences with our players and
offer them some advice," said
Dempster.
Dempster has since taken is
his knowledge of scouting
young players to the
Milwaukee Brewers.
But instead of talking about
all of his coaching success and
accomplishments, he would
much rather speak of all the
friendships he has developed
through the game, the Faith
Baptist Church he attends in
Whitby, his family and his
four (soon to be five) grand-
children.
