Grand Cayman is the largest of the three Cayman Islands, situated in the middle of the calm,

GEORGE TOWN

located in the southwest corner of Grand Cayman, 

George Town is the capital of the Cayman Islands. 

It is the main centre of government, business and 

shopping on the Island. 

George Town has a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, 

of almost old world charm. A few grand colonial 

buildings still remain peppered amongst a host of 

modern developments. There are plenty of interesting 

sites to visit, most of the islands’ grand buildings and 

important facilities are to be found there including 

Fort George, the public library, The National Gallery 

and one of the few remaining nineteenth century 

structures - the old courts building. 

George Town is world famous for its duty-free and 

tax-free shopping experience in the various plazas 

and quirky boutiques - the town is the shoppingepicenter

George Town has been the capital of Cayman since 

the early 1900’s. Its predecessor was Bodden Town,

The Caribbean has a new brand 

and the only place in the world you’ll find it right 

now is here. Founded in 2009, opened in August 

of 2011, and completely developed, owned and 

managed here in Grand Cayman, this exciting 

and exclusive new company is something truly 

local and unique. 

Caribbean Canvas Company (or CCC as it’s also 

called) designs and manufactures bags, clothes 

and accessories for people who live, work and 

travel throughout the islands. 

“That’s what the concept was, really, from the 

beginning,” says CCC founder Hugh Treadwell. 

“Living, working, and traveling in 

the islands requires some solid 

common denominators: 

good basic shorts and 

shirts, one pair of 

pants, lots of great 

T-shirts, a few hats 

and a few good bags. 

Depending on the 

island you’re on, these 

things just aren’t 

available, or they’re 

cheap in quality or 

too expensive, or 

both. We thought 

we could make our 

own stuff to fit these 

needs, knowing what 

would work and do 

it at a good value 

that locals would 

appreciate and travelers 

would find just as useful or as an even better 

souvenir of their trip. We designed and made 

everything in the store exclusively, you won’t 

find it anywhere else in the world and we didn’t 

make anything we wouldn’t want, need, or use 

ourselves.“ 

The CCC “Crew Line” consists of classic men’s and 

women’s shorts, pants, tops, t-shirts (CCC makes 

9 exclusive, fits and fabrics in t-shirts for men 

and women with original designs and artwork!), 

hats and the majority of their signature canvas 

bags. The CCC “5Star” line is only for men at this 

time and features a top quality dress shirt, pant 

and short. The CCC “CrewTECH” line features

tropical watersport specific 

designs such as rash guards, 

fishing and water apparel, 

something called “The 

Extreme Cargo Short,” 

and the “TECHtotes,” 

probably the toughest, 

and in the case of their 

dive bag, most ingenious 

bags ever made. 

A lot of other thinking went into this business 

including commitments to the community and the 

environment. The “Chari-T’s” t shirt line benefits 

local charities, and there’s also a local artist series 

of t-shirts. Every hanger in the store is made of 

completely post-consumer recycled material and 

so are the tags on every item. The shopping bags 

are recycled as well, but CCC also offers every 

customer their signature “LiteWeight Canvas 

Tote” for $5 with any purchase instead. Further, 

CCC is the only company in the Caribbean to be 

part of 1% for the Planet, a global organization 

where members donate 1% of all sales to 

environmental organizations.

owen Roberts International Airport is the main international 

airport for the Cayman Islands as well as the main base for 

Cayman Airways. The airport is named after owen Roberts, 

a pioneer of commercial aviation in the country. 

owen Roberts International Airport commenced commercial 

operations in 1952 and is the major gateway linking the 

Cayman Islands to destinations worldwide and provides the 

main point of entry and exit to Grand Cayman, Cayman 

Brac and little Cayman. It is located in the capital, George

banking and financial district and the cruise ship terminal

BUYING DIAMONDS 

A diamond’s value is evaluated by four key 

characteristics – colour, clarity, cut, and 

carat - known as the Four Cs. Determined 

by nature, colour, clarity, and carat all help 

dictate a diamond’s rarity and value. Cut is the 

only characteristic controlled by man — the 

diamond cutter – and affects both the shape 

and the cut quality. 

CUT 

Shape 

Cut can refer to the outline shape of a diamond: round, oval, marquise, princess, etc. The 

most popular shape is the 58-facet round brilliant; all others are classified as fancy shapes, 

or as modified round brilliants. 

Cut quality 

Cut can also refer to the diamond’s reflective qualities - proportion, symmetry, and polish - all of which affect 

its overall performance. Cut is what determines a diamond’s brilliance. light reflects off a well-cut diamond, 

highlighting its best attributes. By contrast, a poorly cut diamond can appear smaller than it actually is, as 

weight is hidden at the base of the stone.

COLOUR 

A diamond’s colour actually refers to a lack of colour. Colour hinders a diamond’s ability to reflect light. The

Diamonds are created by nature, which leaves unique marks on each stone known as clarity characteristics.

The clarity grade ranges from Fl (flawless) to I2 (obvious inclusions). In most cases, diamonds with clarity

BUYING WATCHES

Deciding which watch to buy is a complex 

recipe of aesthetics, functionality and taste. 

Much of the decision is a reflection of yourself, 

so in this rough guide we will deal with two 

of the main functional differences between 

watches; the type of movement and water 

resistance. 

A watch will be powered by either a 

mechanical (1) or quartz (2) movement. 

Mechanical 

A mechanical watch uses the energy from a wound spring, and keeps time through the highly 

regulated release of that energy through a set of gears (the wheel train) and an escapement. 

Mechanical watches are usually self winding through an oscillating weight but can be hand 

wound also. It uses purely mechanical components to keep time and can typically run for 

about 40 hours on one full wind.

A quartz watch on the other hand features electronic circuitry that has a limited lifespan. 

Quartz 

In quartz watches, a specially designed battery activates a quartz crystal inside the movement that vibrates 

approximately 33 times per second. These vibrations are then translated into impulses by a computer chip, that 

drives an electronic motor. 

Quartz watches were not available to the public in any real quantity until the 1970’s. A quartz watch is cheaper 

and more accurate than a mechanical watch; a good mechanical watch can typically be made no more accurate 

than 2-3 seconds per day, whereas your typical inexpensive quartz is usually good to 0.5 seconds per day or better. 

Water Resistance Guide

Water Resistance 

A watch rated as Water Resistant may come in contact with water to a predetermined extent. Most watches 

have a measurement until which the depth of immersion is theoretically safe. It is important to remember that 

a water-resistant rating is based upon optimum conditions in a laboratory; real life experience and aging of the 

gaskets will effectively decrease the manufacturer’s specifications of water resistance over time. 

Most watches you intend to use for swimming should have a screw-down crown. Screw-down crowns are 

threaded and screw shut to a matching threaded tube in the case, the crown has a gasket that is compressed 

& seals the opening when the crown is tightened - thus ensuring water resistance.

Polycarbonate lenses are ultra-lightweight and virtually shatterproof providing safety and comfort.

Glass lenses provide excellent optical quality and the most scratch-resistant surface. Most premium glass

Anti-reflective coatings are specifically engineered to eliminate annoying back glare and double images. When 

you see someone on TV wearing glasses and can see the reflection from the cameras in front and glare reflecting

DON’T FORGET 

The pace of life here is a little slower and a little friendlier than most places, so take your time 

and be prepared to be greeted by staff (and local customers!) in the stores you visit. 

The currency of the Cayman Islands is the Cayman Islands Dollar, but everywhere will accept 

US dollars also and all major credit cards are accepted on island in most locations. Prices can 

be in either US$ or CI$ so check with the store, the Cayman dollar has a fixed exchange rate 

with the US dollar of CI$1 = US$1.20. 

The national language is English, and everyone who lives and works in Cayman will speak it. 

There are many other nationalities and languages spoken here also, particularly Spanish which 

is very common.
