Monday as I was crossing the road and tried to step up on the curb on the opposite side, a gust of heavy wind caught me and I landed flat on my back and hatless on the road. Nothing seemed to hurt but as I was trying to decide how to get up, a man who had seen the accident parked his car and came to assist me. He helped me up, made sure I was not hurt and then drove off. In all the confusion, I forgot to ask his name. I want to make sure he knows how very thankful I am. It is people like him who make Greenbelt the great place it is. Barbara Likowski Nominations Open For Aging Awards Nominees are now being sought for the Governor’s Leadership in Aging Awards in four categories. The public is invited to nominate individuals, groups or organizations by no later than April 8; a panel of judges will review the nominations to select a winner in each category. The awards will be presented by the Governor and Maryland Secretary of Aging at a special ceremony in Catonsville May 10, during Older Americans Month. Categories Trailblazer – an individual, community group, business or organization that has demonstrated leadership in advocacy or developed an innovative program, research or training for seniors. Visual or Performing Arts – an individual 60 years or older or a group (members must be 55 years or older) that has demonstrated excellence in the visual or performing arts. Health and Vitality – an individual 60 years or older who has demonstrated commitment to healthy living and serves as a role model for others. The February program, organized by the Peace & Justice Coalition, is sponsored by several local grassroots groups. The Reel & Meal aims to raise public awareness about various interrelated social and environmental concerns and inspire action in response to those concerns. This 2010 Bullfrog Film is narrated by ecological economist Dave Batker who offers a humorous, edgy, factual and highly visual analysis of today’s American economy. Challenging ways economic success is measured, the film suggests alternatives to Gross Domestic Product as an adequate measure of society’s well being and is an engaging funny treatment of a serious, complicated subject. The discussion that follows is led by Dr. Brian Czech, president of CASSE, the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy, a group engaged in both academic study and citizen action. The 40-minute documentary, produced by John de Graaf (Affluenza) compares the U.S. economy with that of other industrial countries in terms of quality of life, fairness and ecological sustainability and concludes the U.S. is near the bottom in nearly every category. The discussion afterward will cover what people can do to help put the economy on a new and improved track. Czech will outline the work of CASSE and facilitate the question and answer period about issues raised in the film and alternatives. Czech is the founder and president of CASSE, a visiting professor at Virginia Tech and a conservation biologist in the national office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona, an M.S. from the University of Washington and a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin. His scientific articles have appeared in dozens of peer-reviewed journals, reflecting his work in ecological and economic sustainability. His books include Shoveling Fuel for a Runaway Train, which calls for an end to uneconomic growth and The Endangered Species Act: History, Conservation Biology and Public Policy. Meals must be reserved by 11 a.m. two days ahead so that enough food is ordered. Call 301-397-2208, ext. 4215. All meals include bread and margarine, coffee or tea and skim milk. Black Holes the Focus Of Astronomical Talk The next meeting of the Astronomical Society of Greenbelt will be held on Thursday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the H.B. Owens Science Center, 9601 Greenbelt Road in Lanham. All are welcome; there is no fee. The meeting will feature a presentation by Bernard J. Kelly, who will discuss “Black Holes and Gravitational-Wave Astronomy.” Kelly is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Astrophysics Science Division at Goddard Spaceflight Center. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from University College, Dublin, Ireland, and his Ph.D. from Penn State. His current research interest is in numerical relativity – the use of large computers to build solutions to Einstein’s equations of general relativity for astrophysical scenarios that are too complex for direct analytical work. New Deal Café Holds Annual Meeting Sun. Sunday, February 20 at 2 p.m. is the New Deal Café’s annual meeting. It will be held at the café and will include election of officers and action on a motion for a bylaw change on the amount that can be borrowed without approval of the membership. All are invited; members are encouraged to attend. Call for Green Man Entries on Gardens This year’s Green Man Festival theme will be “Gardens: Messages from Mother Earth.” The festival will include a two-month (May and June) New Deal Café exhibit of art, poetry and writing related to the theme. Organizers of the festival are seeking entries as part of outreach efforts to involve community members of all ages in creating contributions for the exhibit. The theme includes gardens as experiences through the senses or imagination . . . on windowsills, yards, dense forests, along riverbanks – anywhere the Green Man goes to celebrate Mother Earth’s animals and the green, growing world. Natural materials such as wood and stones or recycled glass and nontoxic paints, photography, pages from a nature journal, found objects and a terrarium garden are some of the possibilities mentioned. The date for submission/dropoff is May 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. An opening reception will be held May 22. Closing and retrieval of exhibited materials will take place on June 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. The Green Man Festival is a project of CHEARS (Chesapeake Education, Arts and Research Society).
