Page 4 GREENBELT NEWS REVIEW Thursday, February 17, 2011 Obituaries Hay Khun Lee, Sr. Hay Kuhn “H.K.” Lee, Sr., a popular member of the Greenbelt Aquatics and Fitness Center for more than two decades, died February 1, 2011, at the age of 89 of kidney failure. An enthusiastic swimmer at the indoor pool since he joined in 1990, Lee was fondly regarded as its social director and he considered members of “the spa” his extended family. He was born to Mong Har Lee and Gum Tuey Lim in Washington, D.C., November 10, 1921, and spent several years of his childhood in a farming village in Hoisin, China. It was there that he started swimming in the village pond. “Once you learn how to breathe it’s very easy. I used to go for long distances,” Lee had reminisced. Lee lived in Harrisburg, Pa., and Buffalo, N.Y. By his early 20s he returned to the D.C. metro area where he lived the remainder of his life. For 34 years he worked in government service, including 20 years as an employee of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, before retiring in the 1980s. Lee served in World War II as an Army chauffeur at Fort Myer, Va., where he met his future wife, Loffie “Lu” Lee, at a U.S.O. dance. They married after a few months of courtship and remained married for more than 50 years. After the war, the couple became active members of the Chinese Community Church in D.C. An expert in HVAC systems, Lee worked for the Naval Ordinance Lab and later went to Goddard Space Flight Center, where he earned a 1978 letter from Jimmy Carter for his “contribution to the improvement of government operations” for implementing energysaving and safety initiatives at Goddard’s power plant. He retired from Goddard as chief engineer of the plant in 1980 and was a consultant post-retirement. His wife Lu had also worked in federal government at the Library of Congress, was a social secretary for Merriweather Post and later became a real estate broker. Lee is survived by his two children: Hay K. Lee, Jr. and May- Lily Lee. His son, “H. K., Jr.,” former Greenbelt resident and retired Virginia developmental disabilities services administrator, resides with his wife Debbie in Virginia Beach. His daughter, May-Lily Lee, lives in Richmond and is an Emmy-winning Host/ Senior Producer for the PBS television series “Virginia Currents.” A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 26, with a reception at 11 a.m. and service at noon, at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home at 11800 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring. Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County offers two very different summer programs – Summer Day Camps and Summer Playgrounds/Summer Xtreme Teen Centers. WSSC Shows Video On Black Captains On Tuesday, February 22 at 1 p.m. in observance of Black History Month the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) will hold a program featuring a rarely-seen video about black captains. “Black Captains of the Chesapeake” is a documentary about black watermen who worked on the Chesapeake Bay. The program will be held at the Western Branch Wastewater Treatment Plant, 6600 Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro. Beltsville Garden Club February Meeting The Beltsville Garden Club will hold a general meeting on Wednesday, February 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of the James E. Duckworth School, 11201 Evans Trail in Beltsville. The guest speaker this month will be Christopher Puttock whose topic is “Hawaii Wetlands.” These wetlands include coastal lagoons, bogs and landlocked brackish pools connecting underground to both fresh and salt water. Hawaii is one of the few places worldwide where this type of wetlands is found. Puttock was born in England and lived in Australia for 34 years as a botanist and flora writer for “Flora of Australia.” In 2004 he was the director of the Pacific Center for Molecular Biodiversity and is presently a research associate at the Smithsonian Institution and chief botanist for the Monarch Sister School Program. Refreshments will be served after the meeting. Members are asked to bring a plant or plant-related material for the door prize table. The public is welcome and admission is free.
