The Season is Here!
Knights Ready for the Season
There has been a lot of
hours spent working since our
last official game in February.
Our guys have all made
strides in improving their
skills. All of the offseason
work was laid to rest on
October 29, when 84 young
men tried out for our
basketball program. The
talent at all three levels was
impressive, and after four
days of tough decision making
by our coaching staff, we
decided on 41 young men that
we wanted to be a part of our
program.
We could not be more
pleased with the work those
41 guys have given us in their
preparation over the past
month. We know they are all
itching to get out on the court
and play some basketball.
One of the biggest changes
you will see on the court is
our physicality. We have had
K n i g h t s H o o p s R e p o r t
strength and conditioning
preseason work in the past
but this season we stepped
up our game. I decided to
hire a full time strength and
conditioning coach, Jon
Miller. Coach Miller is our
criminal justice teacher at
VHS, has his certification in
personal training, and knows
his way around a weight
room. He has done a
magnificent job with our
guys this fall. Every guy that
went through the program
has gained weight, strength,
and confidence. We are
extremely pleased to have
Coach Miller on our staff as
he is an even better person
than he is a strength coach.
We open up at home on
Friday night against crosstown
foe West Port. We
certainly hope you can come
out and support all three of
our teams as they take on
Volume 3, ISSUE 2
Basketball season
the Wolf Pack. It should be a
great night of basketball.
You will find our season
schedule later on in the
newsletter. We have a solid
schedule. Our district is going
to be just as tough as it has
always been, and our county
opponents will be licking
their chops to give the
Knights their best shot. Our
players have been practicing
extremely well and are
starting to build the right
chemistry. Our coaching staff
is pleased with the progress
we have made in the month of
November and we are looking
forward to seeing that
translate onto the court.
Again, thanks for all of your
support. We look forward to
seeing you at our games.
Go Knights!!
Vanguard Boys Basketball Mission Statement
To use the game of basketball to develop the individuals in our program into
“the complete package.”
It is our aim to teach student-athletes how to improve daily and grow as a Person, a
Student, and a Player.
We will strive to turn boys into young men, develop them into productive citizens
who we can proudly and confidently send out into the community, and to teach our
players how to have successes well beyond their high school years.

“We’ve added three guys
that are immediate
difference-makers in our
program. It’s always
nice to have great
coaches, and these guys
are certainly that. It’s an
added bonus that all
three of these coaches
are good men. I also
think it’s extremely
important that our
program has coaches
who were former players
here.” - Coach Small
K n i g h t s H o o p s R e p o r t
Coach Small adds Three New
Coaches to the Staff
Stability in a coaching staff in any sport at any level is one of the most important factors for
team success from year to year. Turnover on the staff has not been much of an issue for
Coach Small in his four years at Vanguard. This offseason, however, Coach Small needed to
find the right fit for our JV coaching vacancy and he decided to add two positions to the staff to
further the development of the program and our players. Coach Small added three great
selections to the staff by hiring a full time Strength and Conditioning Coach, a JV Head Coach,
and Post Player Development Coach. The Vanguard Basketball Family could not be more
excited to welcome these men as part of our coaching staff.
Jon Miller - Head Strength & Conditioning Coach
Coach Miller is in his third year of teaching Criminal Justice
at VHS and his first year with the Basketball Program. A life-long
weight lifter and certified personal trainer, he brings a wealth of
knowledge about strength training to our team. A majority of our
Varsity and JV players spent 9 weeks in the weight room with Mr.
Miller prior to the season. There is no doubt that he has had a huge impact on our program in a
short amount of time. Every single player saw weight and strength gains over the preseason
workout period.
A valuable member of the VHS community, Coach Miller sponsors the VHS Blue
Knights Criminal Justice Community Service Club, serves as Head Coach of our Girls Flag
Football Program, and is a member of the discipline department. Coach Miller played Football
and Soccer both collegiately and professionally, and he has coached both of those sports at the
high school level.
Eric Price - Varsity Assistant - Post Player Development
Coach Price was a standout post player for the Knights,
graduating in 2001 and attending Chattanooga State Technical
Community College. After two years of playing for CSTCC he signed a
scholarship to play at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville where
he was recently inducted into their Trojan Athletic Hall of Fame. Eric
went on to play three years of professional basketball, two in Argentina
and one in Uruguay.
Coach Price obviously brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to playing the
post position and has been a valuable asset to the Knights front line players. Currently, Price is
working as a therapist at Marion Juvenile Correctional Facility. He is married to Alicia Price,
and they have three children—Aubrey, Kingston, and Mahogany.
Kelvin Davis - JV Head Coach
Coach Davis is another former Knight on the staff. He starred
in football, basketball, and track during the early 2000’s for Vanguard,
eventually earning a scholarship to play football at Bowling Green
University. Kelvin is in his second term on the basketball staff as he
coached the freshman team in 2008-2009.
Off the court, Coach Davis works as a Corrections Officer at
Marion Juvenile Correctional Facility. He has one son K.J. - 1.

Our Seniors
– Raheem Freeman - #1, Sr. 6’2” 175
Raheem is in his third season as a varsity player. As a junior he averaged
16 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game. In 2011-
2012, he was named to the Ocala Star Banner’s All Area 1 st Team
and the FABC’s All State 3 rd Team. For his career he has appeared
in 44 games, scored 623 points (14.2/gm), pulled down 197 rebounds
(4.5/gm), accumulated 56 steals (1.3/gm), and dished out
57 assists (1.3/gm).
– Tony Tyler - #20, Sr. 6’2” 165
Tony has grown up watching his entire family go through the Vanguard
Basketball program. He is entering his second year on varsity.
Last year he was named to the Ocala Star Banner’s All Area 3 rd
team. Tony has appeared in 26 career games, scoring 255 points
(9.8/gm) and accumulating 139 rebounds (5.3/gm). Last season
Tony lead all Vanguard players with 20 charges taken in 23 games.
He also finished second in the county in best free throw percentage.
For his career, Tony is a 77% free throw shooter (63/82)
- Ashil Manohar – #22, Sr. 5’6” 135
Ashil is the perfect example of what Vanguard Basketball stands
for. During his four years in the program he has put in countless
hours to improve his game, his strength, and his athleticism. No
guy in our program gives every ounce of his being to our team like
Ashil does. As a student in the I.B. Program, his class load keeps
him up many late nights, but he continues to give us his all every
single day. A solid player, excellent student, and an even better
person, he stands for what we believe in at Vanguard. We are
blessed to have him in our program as a leader this season.
- Marcus Hart – #2, Sr. 5’10” 155
Aptly named, this young man transferred into our program and has
given us nothing but heart. Marcus is a hard worker who has improved
greatly with his off season skill development and strength
training. A wonderful student, stand up young man, and excellent
ad salesman, we are thankful for all of Marcus’ contributions thus
far and all of the accomplishments to come.
