BAPTISM
Baptisms are celebrated every Sunday at 12:45 pm. Please call
the Parish Office to register for the Baptism. Pre-Jordan classes
required for parents and optional for godparents, are offered the
second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm in the Parish
Center unless otherwise noted in the bulletin. Baptisms are
limited to four children per Sunday. Letters of eligibility are
due at the Parish Center before a date can be given for
Baptism.
MARRIAGE
Arrangements must be made with a priest at least six months in
advance. You must speak to a priest before making
arrangements for a reception hall. Scheduling, rescheduling or
cancellation MUST be done by a priest. Pre-Cana classes are

“OUR FAITH” CORNER
Saints for May and June
May 25st– Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat – was born in France, in 1779. Thanks to her brother, Louis, eleven years older and
her Godfather at Baptism she was educated in the arts and sciences. By the age of fifteen she was well versed in the Bible, the
teachings of the Fathers of the Church and theology. She had a genuine love for all learning and she decided to become a Nun, a
teacher and eventually founded The Society of the Sacred Heart, which would focus on schools for the poor as well as boarding
schools for young women of means.
May 26th– Saint Philip Neri– was born in Italy, in 1515. Even as a child he was known for his good disposition and his cheerfulness.
As a young man he felt the desire to follow Jesus’ counsel, “Blessed are the Poor in Spirit,” not as a priest but as a lay person.
He traveled to Rome and lived as a poor man dependent upon what God would send him. He worked on his studies and
began a life of prayer and service to the sick and poor. In 1548 he helped to establish the Confraternity of the Most Holy Trinity, an
organization of lay people dedicated to the care of sick and needy pilgrims. At a time when the Protestant Reformation threatened
to destroy the Catholic Church, Philip constantly encouraged many Christians in Rome to personal holiness. He was finally ordained
a priest in 1551 and spent his remaining years working to reform the Church through gentleness, cheerfulness and friendship.
May 27th –Saint Augustine of Canterbury – The Church is unsure of the exact date of Augustine’s birth. We do know he was
one of thirty Monks who set out from Rome in 596 headed to England to preach the Gospel. After many adventures and hardships
he was appointed Bishop of England. Augustine worked hard to spread the Faith throughout England and built a church and monastery
at Canterbury.
June 1st– Saint Justin –was born in Palestine about the year 100. His origins are Greek and pagan. As a young man he
searched for truth from the many philosophies and teachers of his time, especially Plato. He began to study the teachings of Jesus
and at the age of thirty was baptized a Christian. He began writing and teaching about Christianity and influenced others who
were searching for the truth. He explained the beauty and wisdom of his faith and answered those who misrepresented or ridiculed
the Christian religion. He is considered to be the first Christian Apologist or Defender of the Faith of the second century. He
was beheaded for his faith in Jesus Christ in 165.
REGISTRATION SUNDAY
Registration Sunday will take place TODAY, May
19th. Please stop by the Parish Center between
the hours of 10am and 1pm to be officially
welcomed into the parish. No paperwork is
necessary from your previous parish. The process
will take no longer than 15 minutes.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Eucharistic Adoration will not be held on any Monday
on which there is an observance of an official
holiday. There will be no Adoration on Memorial
Day, May 27th.
SANCTUARY LIGHT
The Sanctuary Light for this week is lit in

MONTHLY HOLY HOUR
A great opportunity for stewardship!
Holy Hour gives the parish an opportunity to pray for the needs
of the church especially vocations to the priesthood and
religious life. The Holy Hour will include public prayer (Liturgy
of the Hours) and private prayer before the Blessed
Sacrament. Everyone is welcome. Holy Hour is held the
Thursday evening before First Friday at 7pm.
**CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL**
This weekend, May 18-19th is In-Pew Weekend,
please take a card home and consider how
you can transform the reality of people’s lives.
The reality is that one-third of Philadelphia's
population lives below the poverty line.
Last year, we raised $44,060 for the Catholic
Charities Appeal. Currently, we have raised $38,101 of our
$80,000 goal for the 2013 Catholic Charities Appeal. I thank
all those who have given to this great cause and I ask those
who have not yet given, to reflect on those individuals who
are the most hungry, ill, and vulnerable among us, and
prayerfully consider how you can help them by giving to the
2013 Catholic Charities Appeal.

THE LAMB FOUNDATION
Before leaving our church building each weekend, please
consider stopping by one of our poor boxes located in the
narthex, with your contributions. For the months of March,
April and May 2013, all offerings from the poor box will be
designated to The Lamb Foundation, located in North Wales,
PA. The Lamb Foundation is a private nonprofit organization
based in Montgomery County, PA. They provide affordable
housing and support services to senior citizens and adult
individuals with mental, physical, and developmental
disabilities who would otherwise be homeless. More than 200
residents call the Lamb Foundation home in North Wales and
Lansdale boroughs. In addition to fully furnished and
decorated housing, they provide social and recreational
activities, personal support services, and access and
encouragement for worship. The Foundation also serves the
community with nutritious food for those who qualify through
their food pantry. Please consider helping those that are less
fortunate ~ a little goes a long way! If donating by check,
please make payable to St. Maria Goretti. Thank you.

National Junior Honor Society Induction
Mater Dei Catholic School held its first Induction Ceremony for
the National Junior Honor Society on May 15, 2013. The National
Junior Honor Society honors students who have demonstrated
excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service,
Character and Citizenship. The 2012-2013 Inductees are:
Caroline Noti, Maggie Blosky, Lauren Holland, Cassandra Detweiler,
Craig Rosenberger, Jenna Mozi, Nicholas Muscara,
Katelyn Nitchke, & Alexandra Varallo.
In addition to the 8th grade students who were inducted, the
three founding Pastors of Mater Dei Catholic School, Msgr.
Daniel A. Murray, Msgr. Joseph A. Tracy and Fr. Andrew C.
Brownholtz were made honorary members of the National Junior
Honor Society. During this inaugural year of Mater Dei, our
pastors have exemplified these same five qualities by prayerfully

“NO PARKING ZONE ON DERSTINE ROAD”
Parishioners at St. Maria Goretti Parish located on Cowpath Road
may soon have to walk a little farther to get to Church services.
This would also affect parents and participants for sports activities
utilizing the ball fields along Derstine Road, as the Hatfield Township’s
commissioners have started talking about “NO PARKING”
zones along Derstine Road near the Church.
Aaron Bibro (Hatfield Township Manager) informed the board of
commissioners this past Wednesday night, May 8, 2013, that township
staff and police have began looking at traffic flow, parking conditions
and line of sight issues on Destine from Cowpath Road
south to Grayson Drive in response to a resident concern that, on
days when the Church hosts services or its sports activity fields
host ball games, visitors park on both sides of the street leaving
much narrower lanes of roadway to travel. One resident has told
the township that he saw a young mother place a baby on the
street as traffic was passing, and “when there was parking on both
sides, there was really nowhere else for the woman to go”, Bibro
said.
Thus a preliminary discussion from the township staff and police
that Bibro offered for discussion was that the township could ban
parking completely on the westbound lane of Derstine between
Cowpath and Grayson, and ban it on the east bound lane between Cowpath and the driveway entrance to St. Maria Goretti. “There
are a lot of variables and a lot of stakeholders we need to hear from before we move forward, but that’s what is being thrown out
there as of now”, he said.
Joseph Rydzewski, business manager for St. Maria Goretti , said he had several concerns about the proposal to ban parking, and
offered several suggestions for the township and Church to work together to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow in that area.
Church services tend to draw more parishioners than the parking lot on the church property can handle, Rydzewski said, so St.
Maria Goretti leases extra parking space across Derstine from a landscaping company, and he suggested a pedestrian crosswalk
between that gravel lot and the Church lots could help slow drivers and increase awareness of pedestrians. He inquired to the commissioners,
What do I have to do to get a painted crosswalk on Derstine, and also some signage put up that says “Pedestrian Walkway”
so motorists are cautioned to slow down?
One of the alternative solutions offered was for the people attending the sporting events at the ball field, would be to park their vehicles
on the Church’s regular parking lot and utilize the walkway from the parking lot through a small group of trees that will give them
access to the ball field, or to utilize the parking lot Across from the Church on Derstine, but that would require that a pedestrian
crosswalk be painted on the road. I would like to retain the parking along the side of the ball fields, but we also have to inform our
parishioners to utilize the Church parking lot and the leased parking area.
The Church will look at other alternatives to resolve the parking capacity problem and work closely with Hatfield Township at remedying
the safety issue and parking problem. The potential parking ban will be on the agenda for Thursday night’s township traffic
forum, Zipfel said. He warned that a resolution may not come soon- that street is one of several on the township’s Act 209 list of long
-term traffic improvements it would like to make, but cannot due to tight budgets.
THE GUARDIANS
This monthly support group for fathers of all ages, is named in
honor of Saint Joseph, Guardian of the Redeemer. It provides
opportunities for members to learn from one another by sharing
their insights about challenges they face in married and family
life, in the workplace, and in their spiritual life. Through fellowship,
prayer, and discussion of relevant issues, participants
come to a deeper understanding of the richness of their Catholic
faith and their identity as husbands and fathers. This year,
the Guardians are viewing the DVD series, Crossing the Goal
with a focus on the virtues. For more information or to register

to spend time with other young men your age looking at the
Lord’s calling your life while having fun. QVD is led by priests
and seminarians of the Archdiocese and is supported by the
Archdiocesan Vocation Office for the Diocesan Priesthood.
QVD will be held from June 27th to June 30th at Malvern Retreat

Members of our parish will be revisiting villages (including
Santa Maria Goretti) in Nicaragua, Central America on June
3, 2013 with Monsignor Schmidt/Father Chuck’s Challenge,
hosted by Food for the Poor. There is still a few items needed:
• Cloth diapers, diaper pins or large safety pins
• Diaper rash crème, anti-diarrhea medication
• Small nerf like balls, Frisbees, jump ropes
• Old suitcases (will not be returned) 62”ONLY L+w+h
• Space saver bags
• Monetary donations to help defray the travel cost of this
mission/pilgrimage.
We have filled approx. 25 suitcases with supplies for the villagers.
Donations are needed to help with the the airline fee of
these bags.

SMG will host its 7th annual golf outing on
Friday July19,2013.Arrival time is 12:30PM to
12:45 PM and golf will begin at 1:30 PM at
Macoby Run Golf Course in Green Lane, Pa.
The outing is open to ALL parishioners and
friends. Beginners, families, and seasoned
golfers are encouraged to participate! One
experienced golfer must be included in each
foursome. We will play a scramble format. All golfers will tee
off each hole, then proceed to the best shot and hit the next
shot and proceed until the hole is complete. The cost is
$66.00 per adult and $50.00 for children age 12 and under.

The outing includes greens fees w/ cart, a snack and beverage
upon arrival, hotdogs& beverages at the turn. Following
golf, we will have a buffet dinner including chicken, roast
beef, hamburgers, salads, birch beer and beer. There will be
prizes, a 50-50 drawing, mulligan purchase, and a fun time
for all is anticipated.

TRATION FORMS MUST BE RECEIVED to Fred C. Cicacci
by Wednesday July 10th to play in the outing. See

PART TIME COOK NEEDED
Wanted. Part time cook for Rectory. Approximately 15 – 19
hours per week to shop, prepare and serve meals for the priests
at St. Rose of Lima Rectory. Must be willing to work Saturday
evenings. Please call the Parish Center to set – up an interview.

discussion. This session will have several guest speakers sharing
their incredible stories of conversion. If you would like to

HUMOR CORNER
In Sunday School, they were teaching how God created everything,
including human beings. Little Johnny seemed especially
interested when they told him how Eve was created out
of one of Adam's ribs. Later in the week, his mother noticed
him lying down as if he were ill, and said, "Johnny, what is the
matter?" Little Johnny responded, "I have a pain in my side. I
think I'm going to have a wife."
