Everyday decisions such as creating vehicle parking areas
on our properties can have environmental consequences.
In times of heavy or sustained rainfall the drainage system
can become overloaded and cause catastrophic flooding.
Because of this and changes to Government legislation,
it is becoming increasingly important to focus on well
balanced, sustainable driveway design.
Achieving a well balanced driveway design within the
guidelines of the legislation need not be complicated.

Drivesett tegula, with Linear Drainage
You simply need to decide how you would like to
manage the rainwater that lands on your driveway.
Choose your preferred Marshalls product and a Marshalls
recommended installer for the perfect driveway solution.
Here are three options you might choose to manage the
rainwater that lands on your driveway, along with some
product ideas for each option.
Direct rainwater to a flower bed or another area of the garden which has been
designed to allow water to drain away - NO PLANNING PERMISSION REQUIRED
This option may involve using linear drainage or a driveway channel. It may
also involve your installer putting a soakaway underneath part of your lawn.
The size of soakaway required will vary depending on a number of factors.
Marshalls Register Installers have access to a special Soakaway Size Calculator
to help them make sure that they install the correct size soakaway to do
the job.

Do not make any provision for the rain water that falls on your driveway.
PLANNING PERMISSION IS REQUIRED
This is the least sustainable option and may contribute towards a build up
of rainwater on your property during times of heavy rain. However, if you
choose to go down this route and your Local Authority grants you Planning
Permission you can use any Marshalls impermeable concrete block paving.

(SUDS) for driveways

• This permeable paving system features the Marshalls unique patented
‘Priora’ nib design which allows surface water to pass between blocks
into a specially calculated sub-base without compromising the
structural performance of the driveway
• The use of SUDS can reduce the risks of flooding and pollution of the
public sewer system especially in times of heavy rainfall

Drainage System (SUDS) for driveways
• A contemporary Sustainable Urban Drainage system with an attractive
granite look
• This permeable paving system features the Marshalls unique patented
‘Priora’ nib design which allows surface water to pass between blocks
into a specially calculated sub-base without compromising the
structural performance of the driveway
• The use of SUDS can reduce the risks of flooding and pollution of the
public sewer system especially in times of heavy rainfall
• If installed with the correct sub-base this permeable paving
solution can be used in a front garden without obtaining
planning permission
• Drivesett Argent Priora Blocks are designed to be laid in the
popular random course laying pattern
• Available in the 3 popular Drivesett Argent colours; Graphite, Dark

IMPORTANT Installation Note
The Priora System should not be attempted by the DIY enthusiast or
untrained installer. It requires the careful calculation of a soil permeability
test and appropriate use of specially graded sub-base aggregates.*

Grassguard ®
Grassguard – gives the benefits of
a driveway while retaining a garden look
• Reinforces naturally draining soil, enhancing load capacity, making
it ideal for occasional car parking spaces
• A permeable grass grid for domestic hardstanding areas providing a
sustainable alternative to traditional block paving
• Grassguard’s open grid allows grass to grow through the blocks
providing a green option for parking
• Easy to lay with recommended sub-base of 150mm MOT Type 1, hardcore,
and a bedding regulating layer of sharp sand or pea shingle 25mm thick
• This sub-base is to contain some humus type material (approx 20%)
to support root development and ensure a satisfactory rate of filtration in
most circumstances
• The carefully calculated sub-base will maintain growth during dry periods,
although grass may brown
• A fine soil or loam with a peat mixture or proprietary compost should be
poured in to approximately 30mm below the top surface of the slabs
• Seed with tough coarse rye grass which, as it grows, binds the slabs and

Keybond is a water miscible liquid which stabilises the joint filling
sand used with concrete block paving, impeding the unwanted
erosion of the sand and preventing the ingress of water.
Available in 5 litre containers, each container
contains sufficient solution to treat 250-300
square metres of paving. Keybond is not
recommended for use on clay paving and
paving flags.

If you need help with installation, the last thing you want is for poor
workmanship to turn your ideal garden or driveway into a complete
nightmare. Don’t worry! Marshalls can provide you with a list of approved
and recommended local installers for you to contact.
Professionalism
The Marshalls Register of Approved Landscape Contractors and Driveway
Installers is a national network of recommended professionals. Although they
are not employed by Marshalls, they agree to abide by our own installation
guidlines and are all vetted by Marshalls assessors. In this way, we make sure
that your garden or driveway is installed properly, with great attention paid to
minimising mess and disruption, so you can be sure of a good job!
Reassurance
When you use a Register Member, you can be sure to receive:
• Written confirmation of any quotation
• An estimated start date
• A reasonable estimate of the time required to do the job
• The opportunity to take the Hard Landscape Guarantee. This covers failure
of product for 10 years and the workmanship for 5 years
• The guarantee is obtained via the Register Member who will ask you to
sign the request form to confirm your total satisfaction
• The fee for the guarantee is £50 (+VAT) per £5,000 of the installed value
• Upon receipt of the correctly completed request form and the fee,
Marshalls will send you your guarantee usually within 5 days
• Always request written quotations. We recommend more than one as
service levels vary and the cheapest is not always the best. Make sure
each company quotes on a like-for-like basis.

How to spot a ‘cowboy’
If they come knocking because they ‘just happen to be in the area’ - be wary
Genuine Marshalls Register Installers will never cold call. If they claim to be
genuine Marshalls Register Installers, check with us.
If they say they can ’start tomorrow’- be wary
Reputable installers are in demand and may require several weeks’ notice.
Never accept a verbal estimate
Insist on a written quotation. Quotes should be written on headed paper with an
address and telephone number, not just a mobile number.
If you accept the quote, request written confirmation
A ‘cowboy’ will be reluctant to do this, however a written contract is essential.
