In the year 1889, when
Washington Heights was still
suburban, the Sisters of Mercy
founded Saint Catharine
Academy. The first school was
conducted in a frame building situated
on the south side of 152nd Street, near
what was then called West Boulevard,
now Broadway. The doors of the
Academy were opened in the middle
of the scholastic term. Pupils of both
elementary and high school grades
were admitted.
The preceding sentences were
written by Patricia Maguire ‘41 for
the Yearbook of her graduating class.
They describe the beginning of an
educational institution that, in 2014,
will celebrate one hundred twentyfive
years devoted to the ministry of
education.
Reasons to Celebrate
Someone once wrote that celebrations
of anniversaries are occasions to thank
God for the blessings of the past; to
be grateful for all that God is doing
in the present; and to be expectant
about what God will do in the future.
We recall experiences that made us
laugh, or cry, or filled us with awe.
We “catch up” with one another and
wondrously realize the old bond is
Yearbooks – Valuable Resources
There is something intangible about
the spirit that marks an institution.
We may feel it and recognize it, but
the words to define it escape us. That
is certainly true of SCA. Still, as we
look at old yearbooks, we can see that
important milestone in SCA’s proud
history would soon approach. St.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Celebrating 125 Years
Sr. Patricia Wolf, RSM ‘62
contributions St. Catharine Academy
has made to the education of
women, the Catholic community and
society, generation upon generation
upon generation. It is, therefore,
extraordinarily special for me to
announce the St. Catharine Academy
Quasquicentennial Year: September
2014-September 2015.
Because there is much to
celebrate, there is also much to do
and much to plan. In the Fall of 2011
I will convene a Quasquicentennial
Committee to lead the preparation and
organization of our 125th Anniversary.
I envision a year-long celebration that
honors the gift of our Catholic and
Mercy heritage; celebrates the pursuit
of academic excellence, women’s
leadership and service; gives witness
to the contributions and achievements
of alumnae; and establishes a firm
financial footing for SCA to move
into the future. The Quasquicentennial
Committee will be charged with
executing a plan to bring these broad
strokes of vision into being.
Alumnae are at the heart of
committee membership. While I will
reach out to you, I ask you to reach
out to me. We will need alumnae who
are creative, media-savvy, possess
strong organizational skills, and
are rich in contacts—to name just a
few attributes. SCA has completed
a Master Facilities Plan, designed
to enhance today’s educational
experience. It would be wonderful
to celebrate 125 years with the plan
coming to fruition.
I look forward to hearing from you
regarding your interest in serving on
the Quasquicentennial Committee,
or a sub-committee as well as your
thoughts on ways we might celebrate.
Of Other Things
The end of the year has, in its own
way, as much energy as the beginning
of the year. On June 5, 2011 SCA
graduated 171 young women. Onehundred
percent were accepted into
college; 98 percent will enter college
in September. In this edition you will
see the list of colleges and universities
where students were accepted. Our
top four students will be attending the
University of Binghamton, Drexel
University, Lehman College-Macauley
Honors Program, and Williams
College respectively. This class also
began a new SCA tradition— the
Senior Sleepover at SCA. My thanks
to Sr. Ann M. Welch, Sr. Lynn Dalton,
Ms. Nancy Gonzalez, and Mr. Vincent
Bilancia for helping Class of 2011
celebrate one more time!
Finally, my last President’s letter
spoke to our work to enhance our Fine
Arts department. I was focused on the
visual arts and the revitalization of
our music program. I could not have
dreamed that my letter would evoke
memories from one of our alumnae
who recalled how she was introduced
to a lifelong love of ballet at SCA as
part of SCA’s cultural program. Ann
McMorrow Cronin ‘55 called me,
told me this wonderful story, and then
proceeded to organize friends and
other alumnae to sponsor tickets for
SCA students to attend the New York
City Ballet. A delegation of students
will attend their first ballet in the fall,
thanks to Ann.
Enjoy this edition of PathWays
with its update on Fine Arts, Career
Day, National Honor Society,
reunions, and all of the amazing
activities that go into SCA life.
Have a wonderful summer and
thank you for your support of St.
FOCuS ON ART AT SCA
A Vision of Purpose and Promise
By Darryl Bullock, Ph.D
Canadian-born artist Joyce Kamikura once noted
that “Content starts with an artist’s reaction to a
subject and develops into an expression of their
reaction with, vision of, and emotions and attitudes toward
their subject”. Guided by talented faculty members and a
supportive administration, SCA students are discovering
new means of self-expression through the visual arts. For
many students, especially those who came to St. Catharine
Academy from schools without an art program, the visual
arts component at SCA has assisted young women to see
art as something beyond “stuff that hangs in museums.”
In conversation with the three faculty team of Deborah
Ross, Diane Poli ‘98 and Kenneth Negron, one gets a
sense of an emerging institutional strength and source
of pride. Student artists have exhibited their works in
an expanding network of venues throughout the greater
New York metro area garnering praise and accolades.
The studio/classroom/incubator of the program is a small
area set aside in the Northwest wing of the main floor of
the school. There in tight quarters,
student-artists are instructed in the
history and technique of numerous
forms and styles. Throughout the
school year works in watercolor,
pencil, charcoal, and ink have graced
the corridors. Currently there are four
course offerings: Introduction to Art,
Drawing and Painting, Fashion Design
and Advertising Design. Near-term
plans call for a full year course in
drawing and painting, a new course in
Photoshop , and the eventual teaching
of an Advanced Placement (AP) Studio
Art course.
Sr. Patricia Wolf, RSM ‘62 in a
previously published “Message from
the President” wrote, “We believe
that a Fine Arts program is not an
‘extra’ … it is an essential element that
provides balance within the school’s
total package, demonstrating that it is
the whole person whom we educate.”
Much has been accomplished in a short
time; however, a retrofitting of the Photo by Maeve Sari Moran ’11.
3
creative space, enhanced storage and exhibition space as
well as media-friendly technology are needed.
Looking ahead, the visual arts program has much to
offer. From a prospective collegiate perspective, students
will be able to present a four year portfolio of their works
to admissions committees. Possessing enhanced or new
confidence, the inner voice that speaks to their truest
selves will manifest itself in their artistic expression.
Within the school building the benefits of an arts program
will yield more immediate dividends as students’ senses
of perceiving, producing, knowing, communicating,
evaluating and connecting are reflected not only in their art
but in other courses. This will impact across the school’s
curriculum.
One idea gaining traction is the prospect of establishing
a current student/ alumnae collaborative art exhibition. Any
volunteers? Please contact Angela Cabassa, Director of
Alumnae Relations, at acabassa@scahs.org or 718-882-
Dr. Constance Ward Iervolino ’58 Speaks at
National Honor Society
Constance Ward Iervolino,
Ed.D ‘58, returned to SCA on
May 24, 2011 to be keynote
speaker at the Honor Society
Induction Ceremony. Sixty-
five students from Grades 10,
11, and 12 were inducted into
one or more of the following
honor societies: National
Honor Society, English Honor
Society, Spanish Honor Society,
and Italian Honor Society.
Upon graduation from St.
Catharine Academy, Connie
Dr. Constance Ward Iervolino '58 at NHS Induction
ceremony with her husband, Ralph .
earned her bachelor degree in English from Hunter College,
a master’s degree in reading from Manhattan College, and
her doctorate from Columbia University Teachers College.
She is currently an associate professor at The College of
New Rochelle, Graduate School of Education.
Connie launched her talk offering a bit of history. She
brought the audience back to the earliest days of SCA at 2250
Williamsbridge Rd. Born in the neighborhood, she recalled
that the SCA site was once a large open ball field, and how
excitement and dreams were generated when rumors flew that
a girl’s high school would be built on the site. Then she spoke
directly to the inductees about their hopes and dreams today,
saying, “The best investment you can make for the long run
is to continuously invest in yourself by learning and growing.
Believe in yourself. You will find you are capable of more
than you ever thought possible.”
Comets Varsity Basketball Wins
Bronx-Westchester Crown
Fueled by two team dictums, “Go Hard or Go Home”
and “Whatever It Takes”, SCA’s varsity basketball team
under the tutelage of veteran coach, Sandie Capifali, went
undefeated in conference play to capture the 2010-2011
Archdiocese of New York Westchester-Bronx “B” Division
Championship. The Comets were a perfect 12-0 in league
play and finished the season with an overall record of 15-5.
The team featured a blend of six talented seniors who will be
missed alongside a large group of underclassmen who will
compete for every roster spot next season. But fear not for
“Coach Cap” as she has another sensational six rising seniors
coming back, including team MVP Lexeus Betancourt ‘12.
Commenting on this season’s success, Michelle Diller ‘11
said, “It was a wonderful way to complete my senior year.”
SCA students Jessica Costa ‘11 and Nicole Taveras ‘12 have been selected to participate
in the 2011 Internship Programs of the Bronx Westchester Area Health Education Center.
Ms. Costa and Ms. Taveras were among 250 applicants who sought admission to the program
geared toward high school students and underclassmen in college. Of the sixteen high
school students chosen, St. Catharine Academy earned two internships.
Nicole has an interest in pediatrics borne of the experiences she has seen growing up in
her neighborhood. She envisions herself returning to the Bronx to assist in the care of the
medically underserved. Jessica, who is headed to the College of Mount Saint Vincent this
fall, will advance her interest and knowledge in the field. Check on SCA’s Facebook page
throughout the summer as we monitor their progress.
The AHEC Internship Program matches high school and college students who are underrepresented
in the health professions with healthcare providers in their communities for sixweek
internships. Internships are fifteen to twenty hours per week.

some of what is at the heart of our values and
identity today has deep roots in our past.
The Class Prophecy in the Yearbook of
1943 is a good example of this. Helen Franz,
the writer of that prophecy envisioned that in
1953, classmate Rosemary Thellusson would
be elected Congresswoman from New York and
Mary Kilgannon would be the editor of a popular
Catholic magazine for women.
While those prophecies were not actualized,
the women of that year – and those who came
after them – have demonstrated accomplishments
and leadership in areas once considered closed to
women. An anniversary year is a wonderful time
to celebrate these accomplishments.
Distinguishing Fact from Assumption
As we begin preparations for celebrating this
special anniversary, we are relying on historical
documents of the Sisters of Mercy to clarify
some questions that are part of our early history.
One important clarification needs to be the actual
beginning date of the Academy.
Various unofficial histories of the school
cite conflicting dates for the opening of the
school. However, November 22, 1889, appears
to be most credible. This opinion is based upon
information recorded in the Annals of the Sisters
of Mercy. Under the year 1889, we have an
account that indicates sometime after June,
1889, the pastor of the newly founded parish of
St. Catharine of Genoa (W. 153rd St.) requested
the help of the Sisters of Mercy in establishing
the parish. When the sisters complied with this
request, and purchased a house in the area, the
pastor advised the opening of an Academy. The
account in the Annals concludes, “on November
22nd, the sisters took possession of the new
branch, which was dedicated to St. Catharine of
Genoa, and the school was established”.
An Answer and a Question
Even as this information may settle the matter
of the school’s beginning, it raises up another
persistent question relevant to the spelling of
Catharine. We have a theory about that, but it
will be the subject of a future article! v

Career Day, a special program for Grade 10, was held on May 26,
2011. Twenty alumnae returned, enthusiastic to share their stories
about career opportunities for women, as well as what they have
learned along the way: the importance of actively choosing one’s future,
course preparation in high school, and the fact that a college education contributes
to being successful.
Jean Hurley ‘93, former SCA English teacher, gave the keynote speech
with a strong message about the challenges of the job market, the need to
be flexible and adaptable, and specific skills
they should master to be indispensible to an
Quietly and tirelessly they go generally unnoticed … such is the world of a high school guidance
counselor. You might wonder why would a person seek an internship and aspire to work in the
profession, just ask Amanda Diaz ‘08 and she will enthusiastically tell you that she had one who made
a difference. The person who made that difference for Amanda was Ms. Glenda Rivera, a guidance
counselor at SCA. Amanda is currently a junior at the College of Mount St. Vincent and she recently
completed an internship at her alma mater. While interning, she gained a deeper understanding
and appreciation of the many roles that guidance counselors play beyond the characteristic stress
of preparing college application packages. “The tasks are not always glamorous, but the perceived
urgency of the moment provides an opportunity to make a difference.” There is a very fortunate school
awaiting Amanda’s passion and talent to serve.

career opportunities extend well beyond what they know. Intentionally
we seek to broaden their horizons and include career opportunities that
students probably would not know about. Since we invite only alumnae
