Community Mangrove Monitor<strong>in</strong>g Program<br />

2002 saw <strong>the</strong> completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>t Commonwealth and NT Government Community<br />

Mangrove Monitor<strong>in</strong>g Program. The objectives <strong>of</strong> this program were to determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> impacts <strong>of</strong><br />

coastal development on mangrove communities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Darw<strong>in</strong> region. Over 880 community<br />

members were directly <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mangrove survey work, as a consequence education and<br />

awareness was considered to be a major achievement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project (Lewis 2002).<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above program, a rubbish<br />

survey was developed through <strong>the</strong> National<br />

Revive our Wetlands Program. The survey<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved volunteers collect<strong>in</strong>g and assess<strong>in</strong>g<br />

rubbish accumulated <strong>in</strong> mangroves at six sites<br />

<strong>in</strong> three different catchments. The most<br />

dom<strong>in</strong>ant form <strong>of</strong> rubbish was alum<strong>in</strong>ium<br />

cans, followed by plastic bottles and bags<br />

(Lewis 2002).<br />

The <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Infrastructure, Plann<strong>in</strong>g and Environment; and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

Industry and <strong>Resource</strong> Development, <strong>in</strong> conjunction with <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Territory</strong> University<br />

support post-graduate studies <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g mangroves. Past and present projects <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

• analysis <strong>of</strong> l<strong>in</strong>ks between mangrove<br />

communities and fish population and<br />

ecology;<br />

• establish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> Sesarmid crabs<br />

<strong>in</strong> mangrove leaf litter breakdown;<br />

• establish<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>ks between <strong>in</strong>sects and<br />

mangroves;<br />

• description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> biological diversity<br />

<strong>of</strong> mangroves;<br />

• studies perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> recovery <strong>of</strong><br />

mangroves from disturbance;<br />

• studies perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to mangrove<br />

rehabilitation; and<br />

• mud crab habitat analysis.<br />
