Mangrove Visits<br />

There are many areas around Darw<strong>in</strong> which are well suited to learn<strong>in</strong>g more about mangroves.<br />

Board walks with helpful <strong>in</strong>terpretive signs, suitable for use by tourists, scientists and students,<br />

can be found at East Po<strong>in</strong>t Nature Reserve, M<strong>in</strong>dil Beach and Casuar<strong>in</strong>a Coastal Reserve.<br />

If you choose to go and spend some time <strong>in</strong> mangrove areas be sure to observe basic safety<br />

precautions <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• Wear protective cloth<strong>in</strong>g. Long sleeves and pants will protect you from sharp objects and<br />

bit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>sects.<br />

• Wear sturdy footwear. Mud, mud and more mud! Be aware that <strong>the</strong> mud may hide sharp<br />

objects.<br />

• Insect repellent should be worn on any exposed areas <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g your hands and neck.<br />

• Wear sun cream, especially if you are observ<strong>in</strong>g mangroves <strong>in</strong> open areas such as beach<br />

foreshore.<br />

• Dr<strong>in</strong>k lots <strong>of</strong> water. Walk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> hot, humid mangroves can be hard work!<br />
