incumbent upon you to furnish evidence<br />

that it is equivalent to the Council of<br />

Europe’s level C2. Although preference is<br />

given to applicants who can demonstrate<br />

a C2 proficiency in English, under certain<br />

circumstances and at the discretion of<br />

the <strong>Diplomatic</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>, applicants with<br />

level C1 may be also be considered. Students<br />

with relevant academic credentials<br />

beyond a first university degree may be<br />

eligible for direct admission into the second<br />

year.<br />

ADMISSION PROCEDURE<br />

A completed MAIS programme application<br />

form, together with all required documents,<br />

should be sent to the <strong>Diplomatic</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> of <strong>Vienna</strong> by 1 March 2013.<br />

All applications are reviewed by the MAIS<br />

programme committee. Candidates may<br />

also be required to sit a written exam<br />

and/or be available for an interview.<br />

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS<br />

A minimum of 120 ECTS points have to<br />

be earned over the two years of the MAIS<br />

programme.<br />

Of these, 56 ECTS points have to be<br />

acquired from the following obligatory<br />

modules: “Principles of Political Science<br />

and International Relations”, “Principles<br />

of International Economics”, “Principles<br />

of International and European Law”,<br />

“Fundamentals of International History”,<br />

“Interdisciplinary Lectures and Seminars”,<br />

“Master’s Thesis” and the final defence of<br />

the thesis.<br />

In addition, a minimum of 44 ECTS points<br />

have to be acquired from at least three<br />

of the four optional modules offered:<br />

“International Relations and Comparative<br />

Politics”, “International Economics”, “International<br />

and European Law”, “International<br />

History”; included in these 44 ECTS<br />

points is the successful participation in at<br />

least three seminars.<br />

During the two years of the MAIS programme<br />

at least 4 ECTS points have to<br />

be earned within the language module in<br />

German or French.<br />

After fulfilling the above-mentioned<br />

three requirements, remaining ECTS<br />

points may be acquired by attending<br />

courses in the optional modules “Area<br />

Studies and Current Issues”, “Austrian<br />

Studies” and “Language Skills”.<br />

If B+ is the lowest grade acquired during<br />

the two years in the MAIS programme<br />

and if at least half of the courses, the<br />

Master’s Thesis and the final defence are<br />

graded with A, a distinction will be mentioned<br />

on the transcript.<br />
