“I can wholeheartedly recommend
the Summer Course at the
Diplomatic Academy of Vienna
to any enthusiastic learner of the
German language. The harmony
in which the Diplomatic Academy
and the beautiful city of Vienna coexist
cannot be put into words, it
has to be experienced.”
Summer Course 2010 & 2011
German Language and Austrian Studies
Summer Course
33
Every year in August the DA organises the Summer Course for German as a Foreign
Language and Austrian Studies. It lasts four weeks and offers intensive language
training for learners at different levels of competence (A1–C2) from the very beginner
to the advanced speaker. The course is open to anybody 18 and over.
TOPICS AND METHODS
The instruction method is communicative,
geared for adults and tailored to the
needs of the students. The material which
features in the language classes is cho-
sen for its topicality and authenticity, and
deals as far as possible with themes from
politics, economics, culture and history
with naturally a particular emphasis on
Austria. Classes are held in small groups,
thereby permitting intensive and highly
personal attention to the individual
students.
COURSE PROGRAMME
Whilst the mornings are dedicated to
formal language work, in the afternoons
participants can learn about Austria by
means of “research projects”. These offer
students the opportunity of discovering
Austria for themselves, as well as putting
into practice their newly acquired language
skills.
LECTURES AND EXCURSIONS
The DA Summer Course also provides
lectures on various aspects of Austrian
politics, history, economics and culture.
Participants furthermore have the opportunity
to visit international organisations
based in Vienna as well as Austrian political,
economic and cultural institutions
and to discuss issues with representatives
from these bodies. An all-day excursion
offers students the opportunity to discover
a part of Austria outside Vienna.
CERTIFICATES
Participants are awarded a confirmation
of attendance. They may also sit the
examination for the Österreichisches
Sprachdiplom (ÖSD).*
* examination fees are not included in the course
price
