When he found a suitable pine, he hit it with all his<br />

strength. He hit it again, chopping a vee-shaped wedge. He hit it<br />

a third time, slamming the ax-blade awkwardly into the wedge. The<br />

blade flew off its handle, landing in a pile of leaves, nearby,<br />

on the forest floor. "Bummer!" he growled.<br />

The dog approached.<br />

"Get out of here!" he commanded.<br />

Bummer did not respond.<br />

He kicked the unsuspecting dog in the midsection.<br />

Bummer, tail between his legs, headed back towards the<br />

Dan bent over to pick up the ax-blade. He heard a tearing<br />

sound; his pants had split at the crotch. He felt for the damage<br />

with his hand.<br />

He picked up the blade, and tried to fix it securely onto<br />

the cracked handle. It would not stay.<br />

"Useless!" he th6ught. He held the stainless steel blade in<br />

one hand, and the cracked wooden handle in the other. He threw<br />

them both down onto the ground.<br />

"Fuck this!" he thought. "Fuck the garden, well, hunting,<br />

and chopping! Fuck everything!"<br />

"Fuck Thiiiiissssl" he yelled to the dry dusty woods.<br />

When he arrived back at the log cabin, Diana was asleep in<br />

bed. There was no dinner prepared, and nothing ready to cook.<br />

"Spoiled bitch!" he mouthed in a furious whisper. He chewed<br />

on a plateful of dried fruit and stale bread.<br />
