+ Cahier d’exercices
Objective of the course:
The goal of French 1501/1502 is to learn the major structures of the French language. Focus will
be placed on all aspects of the target language: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
The instructors of the first-year program strongly suggest that students take the initiative to expose
themselves to French activities outside the classroom, for example, the language Acquisition
Center (AH311)
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to converse when dealing with routine tasks and social situations that require an
exchange of basic information related to work, school, recreation, particular interests and areas of
competence.
Attendance and Participation
Students are allowed a total of three absences. They will be dropped after four
absences. Absences will affect the final grade. If a student decides to drop the class,
it will be his/her responsibility to actually do so. If his/her name appears on the final
roll (after the final date to drop for academic reasons), he/she will be awarded a
grade of “F.” Two tardies constitute an absence. Students are expected to arrive on
time for every class and stay in class for the entire time. They may only leave the
room when class has ended. Constant coming and going is very disruptive to class
activities and consequently to learning. Food, drink and gum will not be allowed in
class. Cell phones must be turned off and put away. All students are expected to
participate actively in classroom activities. Dialogues will be geared towards the
listening and speaking aspects of the language and towards the oral final exam.
After the third absence, the overall grade will decrease by 1%.
Homework
Homework will be assigned on a daily basis and will involve a lot of memorizing, writing,
grammar practice etc. Assignments will be based on the text CAMPUS, the Cahier d’exercices,
handouts and other materials. Assignments must be handed in on time.
French Day
There is going to be an event including presentations and activities, food, culture, music etc. in
which all students are invited to participate. The date will be announced.
Exams
There will be two exams during the semester and a comprehensive final at the end. The date
and time for the exam has already been announced in the syllabus. There will also be a final
oral exam. Students are required to be present on exam days as there will be no make
ups. Also, there will be several quizzes for which there will be no make-ups except in
extenuating circumstances. The dates for the quizzes may be changed depending on how
much material is covered in each class.
Grading scale
Grades Important. After 3 authorized absences, each consecutive absence will constitute a
1% decrease in the grade. For example, an A and 4 absences will result in an A-.
