Those Present: Mr. Brad Bies, Ms. Jamie Swan, Mr. Don <strong>Ed</strong>gar, Derek Zenk, Mr. Greg Janisch, Denielle<br />

Meyerink, Sara Berg, Lauren Fosheim, Matt Dybedahl, Erin Kennedy, Bret Monson, Noelle Rist, Brandy<br />

Odegaard, Jessica Peck, Brett Burk, Mr. Steve Ollila, Padraic McCarthy, Shawna Reuer, Mr. Don Sutera,<br />

• Brett Monson called the meeting to order<br />

• Sara Berg read the minutes. Mr. Greg Janisch moved that minutes be approved as read.<br />

• Jamie Swan reported on membership reports.<br />

o Everyone needs to make sure they make the March 20 th deadline; anyone who doesn’t<br />

has a $35 late charge. All schools met the December 1 st deadline‐ thank you!<br />

• Matt Dybedahl gave treasures report and explained the areas on the financial report.<br />

o Mr. Greg Janisch asked whether the bills from chapters are being sent to business<br />

managers or advisors. Mr. Swan will check to see if bills are being sent to business<br />

offices.<br />

• State Officer Reports<br />

o Matt Dybedahl reported on chapter visits. State officers split up and created curriculum<br />

in pairs. Chapter Visits were finished by December.<br />

o Sara Berg reported on National Convention. <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> had approximately 400<br />

members present, 110 were on state busses.<br />

o Noelle Rist reported on State Leadership. Two workshops were available this year by<br />

Matt Tollefson and one by members from Lemmon who went to Taiwan. 469 members<br />

competed in CDE’s.<br />

o Erin Kennedy reported on DOT and Legislative Breakfast. 48 district officers were<br />

present, and 5 state officers. Numerous legislators and guests were present.<br />

Brad Bies commented that the legislative turnout was very good.<br />

o Brett Monson reported on the Corduroy Classic. <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> had 230 <strong>FFA</strong> tickets sold,<br />

a tremendous increase from last year. Two <strong>FFA</strong> members sang the national anthem (one<br />

for each game) and several members were recognized.<br />

o Lauren Fosheim reported on National <strong>FFA</strong> Week. State officers recorded PSAs. Advisors<br />

and District officers were asked to use the state website and utilize activities there.<br />

• District Officer Reports<br />

o District 1, Derek Zenk: T‐shirts, proficiency awards, working on <strong>FFA</strong> week


Old Busininess<br />

o District 2: Jessica Peck: Ordered polos, discussing scrapbooks and newsletter, have<br />

decided to hand out most active member award<br />

o District 3: Brandy Odegaard: Had first meeting on Saturday Feb. , ordered polos and<br />

wearing them to CDEs, trying to hold a fall leadership training, utilizing opening<br />

ceremonies, district officer picture, attended farm show in Sioux Falls, and created a<br />

district motto<br />

o District 4: Denielly Meyerink: adding activities such as dodge ball and volleyball, officers<br />

have polos, focus is to get members excited<br />

o District 5: Jessica Peck: Attended DOT, discussed a canned food drive, dance, and gift<br />

baskets to send overseas for armed forces, participated in animal nursery at Black Hills<br />

Stock show<br />

o District 6: Shawna Reuer: Getting ideas to get district more involved<br />

o District 7: Jared Questad: Holding a district dance and enjoyed DOT<br />

• State Leadership CDEs: Mr. Ollila commented on a wonderful effort made this fall in the<br />

tabulations as respective scores. Although, when they were returned there were date of<br />

entry errors, State CDE committee should certify the CDE event. Mr. Brad Bies commented<br />

that the CDE committee must choose to do this.<br />

• Legislative Breakfast: Jessica Peck thanked state officers for preparing District officers.<br />

Maddy Wren commented on a good turnout. Denielle Meyerink thanked everyone who<br />

helped out at district officer training. Drake McCarthy commented that activities around the<br />

hotel should have been quieter due to noise and running around. Ms. Swan asked about<br />

start time, it seemed to be a positive change.<br />

• National Convention: Ms. Swan commented on finding the right bus prices. Mr. McCarthy<br />

commented on the bus tours and times; it should be looked at closer next time. Ms. Swan<br />

commented that there will be more communication between the state executive secretary<br />

and the bus companies next year. Mrs. Kelly Dunkelburger suggested letting two schools<br />

volunteer for the state booth. She commented that it is a very long two and a half days with<br />

only 6 students; she suggests bringing more members. Mr. Brad Bies said that State<br />

Tourism and Development may assist the <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> <strong>FFA</strong> with the state booth next year.<br />

• Corduroy Classic: Ms. Swan commented on the great turnout and the 230 tickets bought.<br />

SDSU has been very pleased with the event’s growth over the last four years.<br />

• Mr. Brad Bies asked if district officers were informed of their duties during the state fair.<br />

Noelle Rist, Erin Kennedy, Brett Monson, and Sara Berg commented about district officer<br />

interviews. Mr. Greg Janisch asked about a tentative schedule being given to them during<br />

District Officer Training. Mrs. Kelly Dunkelberger commented that we should add planning<br />

for the Sioux Empire Farm show for Districts 3 and 7. Mr. Ollila commented that district<br />

officer advisors should be held accountable also. Mrs. Lisa Hendrickson commented that<br />

her school and district needs better communication. Maddy Wren commented that it is<br />

important to stress the responsibilities to each district officer.


New Business<br />

• Made For Excellence: Ms. Swan commented that registration is due Feb. 20,<br />

cancellations afterward are non‐refundable. It will be held at Chamberlain High School<br />

and national staff will be coming in to facilitate the conference. Ms. Swan will let all<br />

advisors and district officers know more info about the conference.<br />

• CDE updates: Mr. McCarthy asked about the <strong>Ag</strong> mechanics contest. Ms. Swan posted<br />

the modifications made by Brandy Knudson to the range/plant id rules.. Noelle Rist<br />

asked about the Floriculture CDE; the issue is currently being addressed. Mr. Greg<br />

Janisch asked about grain grading scores on Scranton sheet; this will be addressed. Mr.<br />

Ollila commented on Range/Plant ID tie breaker found in section ‘G’ of the rules: “In the<br />

event of a team tie, scores from fourth team members breaks the tie, If fourth team<br />

members are tied, refer to individual tie breakers. If one team does not have a fourth,<br />

the team with a fourth score winds. If neither team has a fourth, use the third place<br />

team members scores.” Mr. Hudson suggested that the rules could be simplified by<br />

using the third place team member’s scores as a tie breaker.<br />

o Mr. Greg Janisch moved that paragraph G be eliminated and rewritten as<br />

follows: “In the event of a team tie scores from third place team members<br />

breaks the tie.”<br />

o Seconded by Jessica Peck, motion passed<br />

• Newel <strong>FFA</strong> Resolution: (refer to handout) Mr. Ollila summed up that one resolution<br />

simply asks that the <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> <strong>FFA</strong> remain neutral on the issue of animal<br />

identification system. Mrs. Lisa Hendrickson commented that there are also issues with<br />

animal ID within her chapter . Mr. Ollila commented that we should be ahead of the<br />

game and not having the state fair force students to be a part of this program; this is<br />

currently happening to students in Colorado. Mr. Ollila commented that there are<br />

already plenty of tools for identification that are already in place in <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong>. Mr.<br />

McCarthy asked about our standings with the National <strong>FFA</strong> Association. Bret Burk added<br />

more clarification about the specifics of premise registration. Mr. McCarthy suggested<br />

that ag teachers should be further educated on the issue also. Mr. Don <strong>Ed</strong>gar suggested<br />

that voting delegates at the state convention be educated on the issue before voting.<br />

Bret Burk, Mr. Brad Bies, and Mr. Ollila commented that members can educate<br />

themselves via the internet and their advisor if the info is provided. Noelle Rist<br />

suggested having a power point or info session to voting delegates.<br />

o Noelle Rist moved to place the resolution opposing the exclusion of <strong>FFA</strong><br />

members from participation in the showing or selling of livestock for lack of<br />

premises registration to be put on the agenda for the SD State convention in<br />

April for discussion and voting before the delegate body. The <strong>Executive</strong><br />

Committee took no affirmative action on these resolutions. The Committee<br />

feels that this issue is important enough to warrant discussion by the delegate


ody; however since the <strong>Executive</strong> Committee did not vote to enact either<br />

resolution as a policy, any action taken to accept the resolutions by the<br />

delegates must be ratified at the next <strong>Executive</strong> Committee meeting (Summer<br />

2008).<br />

o Jared Questad seconded, motion passed<br />

o Brandy Odegaard moved to place the Resolution opposing the <strong>FFA</strong> promotional<br />

involvement with the National Animal Identification System to be put on the<br />

agenda for the SD State convention in April for discussion and voting for the<br />

delegate body<br />

o Erin Kennedy seconded, motion passed<br />

Mrs. Kelly Dunkelberger suggested that ag teachers educate their voting<br />

delegates no‐biased before the state convention. Mr. Sutera<br />

commented that ag advisors may make students aware. Mr. McCarthy<br />

suggested that the responsibility be put on district officers to be sure<br />

their delegates are educated. Maddy Wren commented that due to<br />

distance and time, this would be difficult. Denielle Meyerink added<br />

that this could be done with provisions.<br />

• State Convention: Jamie Swan commented on talent show, Melanie Koehlmoos will be<br />

in charge, as well as the state chorus. All information concerning this will be posted on<br />

the state <strong>FFA</strong> website. Brett Monson reported that state convention fundraisers will be<br />

the basket auction, t‐shirt sales, and date raffle.<br />

Ms. Swan reported that delegate session will be the same as last year,<br />

each delegate will be given a wristband and will be fed lunch after the<br />

session.<br />

Nursery Landscape will now be held in Foundation Seed<br />

The food science test will be held at 6pm Sunday night<br />

Dairy Foods will start at 10, 11, and 12 this year. This will allow for the<br />

CMT tests to be done before session<br />

Floriculture has been broken into two parts‐held in same location<br />

The PSO reception will now be upstairs in the trophy room of the HPER<br />

Sara Berg reported that the past 12 years of PSO will be honoring Mrs.<br />

Eide with a quilt for her years of service to the <strong>FFA</strong> at convention.<br />

Ms. Swan also reported on state convention speakers.<br />

Mary Christiansen will be the Monday afternoon<br />

speaker<br />

Brady Revels, National <strong>FFA</strong> VP will be the Monday night<br />

speaker<br />

Thomas Dismukes will be our Sunday night speaker<br />

Dr. <strong>Ed</strong>gar is working on CDE tabulations


Mr. Hudson commented on members getting into the state convention<br />

dance. He suggested that wrist bands should be sold ahead of time<br />

and included in packet. No wristbands be sold at Hyper. Mr. Bies<br />

added that they could be sold at check‐in to ADVISORS only.<br />

Mr. Hudson moved that wristbands for the dance at<br />

state convention be purchased in the pre registrations<br />

forms only for CDEs. Exception is that advisors only<br />

could be sold wristbands at the barn at registration.<br />

• State Fair: Ms. Swan reported that there will not be drastic changes to the state fair<br />

schedule this year.<br />

• Bus Scheduling: Ms. Swan reported that she will contact several bus companies to check<br />

on prices/availability and service.<br />

• Update on Exec. Sec. Position: Mr. Bies reported that he is working with Dr. Lon Moeller<br />

at SDSU to further discuss the position. There is no process started at this time, but it<br />

will be started as soon as possible.<br />

• SD State <strong>FFA</strong> Website: Advisors commented that it is taking some getting used to. Mr.<br />

Bies added that the front page is simply for a more “team ag ed” approach. Erin<br />

Kennedy added that the state officers plan to add a district officer page to the state<br />

website.<br />

discrepancies need to be discussed at this meeting. Each district reported on their<br />

number of state degree applicants. There are 279 recipients this year.<br />

of the SD <strong>FFA</strong> Association to the SD <strong>FFA</strong> Foundations if there are no tax implications.<br />

• Erin Kennedy moved to change the deadline for National Chapter, Proficiencies, and HO<br />
