Second Street is the portion of Hwy. 79<br />

that lies inside the loop in Taylor. Also<br />

referred to at the state level as Business<br />

Hwy. 79, it intersects Main Street (Hwy.<br />

95) near downtown and is lined by<br />

a variety of businesses, restaurants,<br />

industrial companies and automobile<br />

dealerships. The city is scheduled to take<br />

over maintenance of the road from the<br />

Texas Department of Transportation<br />

when a major construction project<br />

concludes in mid-2011. When<br />

construction is complete, the road will<br />

no longer be called Business Hwy. 79.<br />

4 Taylor Meat Company has been<br />

in Taylor since 1947 and at its current<br />

location since 1974. This USDA-inspected<br />

facility is open to the public and offers<br />

brisket, ham, ribs, smoked hams and<br />

turkeys, cheeses, jerky and more than 50<br />

types of sausage. Deer processing is also<br />

available. The retail counter—which also<br />

features a variety of dry rubs—is open<br />

from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through<br />

Friday and 7 a.m to 4:30 p.m. Saturday.<br />

Transportation<br />

The <strong>City</strong> of Tayor and Williamson County<br />

are planning improvements to Second<br />

Street. The total cost estimate is $18<br />

million to $20 million, of which $14.2<br />

million will be contributed by Williamson<br />

County. Improvements to Second<br />

Street will include upgrades to utilities,<br />

drainage, and the addition of turn lanes<br />

at Sloan and Howard streets.<br />
