Gina Stebing Copeland ’98 and her husband, Joe, announce the birth of their second child, Issac Perry, on March 11. Gina is a physical therapy assistant at Woodview Health Care in Fort Wayne, Ind. Jodi Lewis Kittel ’98 and her husband, Eric, announce the birth of their daughter, Hope Lydia, on July 11. She joins her sister, Grace Ellyn. Jodi is a physical therapist assistant quality assurance manager for Athletico Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine in Oak Brook, Ill. The family lives in Elmhurst. Lesa Malone ’98 ’03 is a court reporter for the Marion County Criminal Court 13 in Indianapolis. She is also in the Big Sister Mentor program in Indianapolis. Marcel ’98 ’04 and Angela Thomaston Samuel ’02 announce the birth of their son, Nelson Marcel, on June 8. Marcel is employed at Midwest Independent Transmission in Carmel, Ind. Angela is a staff accountant at Ernst & Young in Indianapolis. Nelson joins his sister, Naomi, at home in Indianapolis. Todd Vaught ’98 ’06 is a geography teacher at the Ben Davis Ninth Grade Center in Indianapolis. He lives in Indianapolis. Shannon Stallwood Wheeler ’98 and her husband, Tommy, announce the birth of a son, Mitchel Liam, on August 31, 2005. Mitchel was welcomed home by his sister, Zoey Elizabeth. Stacey Fry Hummel ’99 and her husband, Richard, announce the birth of a son, Cameron Douglas, on May 30. Stacey is a nurse at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin, Ind. Cameron joins big brother, Harrison, at the family’s home in Greenwood. Jaime Jackson Miller ’99 ’00 and her husband, Kenneth, announce the birth
of their daughter, Avery Nicole, on October 4, 2005. Jaime is a physical therapist at Bartholomew County School Consolidation in Columbus, Ind. Avery joins her brother, Bryce, at home in Seymour. Natalia Olenina ’99 ’00 ’02 and Aleksey Yefremov were married July 21. Natalia is a portfolio analyst at Lincoln Capital Fixed Income Management in Chicago, Ill. The couple lives in Chicago. Stephanie Rizzi ’99 and Scott Willison were married December 3, 2005. Stephanie is a financial planner for RJP Investment Advisors, LLP and Scott is owner of Willison Appraisals. The couple lives in Indianapolis. Jennifer Steed ’99 was awarded a Fulbright teacher exchange award for the 2006–07 school year, teaching English in Bamberg, Germany. She is a German teacher at Brownsburg High School, Brownsburg, Ind. Jennifer lives in Indianapolis. Angela Kolter Vogel ’99 ’01 announces the birth of her son, Daniel James, on June 28. Angela is a physical therapist and director for the Rehabilitation Department at DeKalb Memorial Hospital in Auburn, Ind. The family lives in Auburn. Chad Wolff ’99 is an instructor at the National Pitching Association in San Diego, California, and is also a pitching coach at Point Loma Nazarene University. He lives in San Diego. 2000s Kenny Caselden ’00 ’02 and his wife, Chantay, announce the birth of their daughter, Grace Elizabeth, on July 15, 2005. Kenny is a youth minister at Sts. Joseph & Paul Catholic Church in Owensboro, Ky. He is a graduate student at Western Kentucky University, pursuing a master’s degree in professional mental health counseling. The family lives in Owensboro. From corn fields to oil fields Living half of the year on the sea is quite a change from growing up in rural, landlocked Indiana, but Megan Shurn ’03 loves the change in scenery. Megan is an operation technician in deep-water production on Na Kika BP, an oil and gas development system, in the Gulf of Mexico, 144 miles from New Orleans. Megan’s job includes checking processes, chemical testing, and overall maintenance of the facility. This requires her to reside at sea on the structure for 14 consecutive days, followed by a 14-day break at her home in DeRidder, Louisiana. Na Kika is the deepest, permanently moored, floating oil and gas development system in the world. Its subsea development includes 10 wells in water depths ranging from 5,800 feet to 7,000 feet. This single structure alone supplies enough fuel for 3.1 million vehicles and enough natural gas for four million homes daily. It measures 120 yards in length and width. Megan says her University of Indianapolis education was vital in preparing her for this position on Na Kika. Her familiarity with lab processes gained through the UIndy chemistry department sets her apart from others already in the industry. Because of her academic background, she was able to rewrite the lab procedures Na Kika uses, which in turn increased accuracy in their processes. Age and gender also set Megan apart in her position. She is the only female operation technician in her group and one of the youngest members of her crew. As a former Greyhound cross country and track athlete, Megan says physical endurance and agility is important in helping her to excel in her work. “Sometimes we are working on one side [of Na Kika] and have to run all the way to the other corner to fix a problem occurring across the structure. It definitely helps keep me in shape!” she said. Living and working in the same facility brings a different dynamic than do other, more typical jobs. Her job also comes with sleeping quarters for the employees. When Megan isn’t working, there are plenty of activities to fill her free time. With satellite television, Internet access, cell phones, and plenty of board games and cards, the crew is able to have fun and stay entertained during their two-week stints on the structure, she says. Megan’s unique job has several perks, including viewing ocean wildlife, which she sees on a daily basis. She compares her work environment and culture to that of a big family. “Because we live and work together, everyone always watches out for one another,” she said. Megan feels that the University’s motto of “Education for Service” also continues in her professional life, because BP is very active in community service and supported Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, with employees (including Megan) volunteering at St. Jude’s Hospital. —Lindy Wildman ’06 alumni.uindy.edu 37
