Indiana Central University bestowed<br />

honorary degrees on two United<br />

Methodist ministers at the annual<br />

School of the Prophets. The 43rd<br />

annual meeting of the school was<br />

held on the <strong>ICU</strong> campus August<br />

13-1 6.<br />

Dr. Gene E. Sease, <strong>ICU</strong> president,<br />

awarded doctor of divinity degrees<br />

to the Rev. Masaichi (Mike) Katayama<br />

and the Rev. J. Philip Klinger. The<br />

degrees were presented Monday,<br />

August 13.<br />

Katayama is the church's<br />

Indianapolis district superintendent.<br />

New bishop visits <strong>ICU</strong> I<br />

Indiana’s United Methodist clergy<br />

had an opporttlnity to meet their<br />

newly appointed bishop on Tueshy,<br />

August 14 at the 1984 School of the<br />

Prophets at <strong>ICU</strong>. The Rev. Leroy<br />

Hodapp, appointed by the<br />

Jurisdictional Conference on July<br />

19, attended his first public reception<br />

on Tuesday, August 14, in Schwitzer<br />

Center. The school is hosted annually<br />

by <strong>ICU</strong> and is the only time all of<br />

the state’s Methodist ministers are<br />

together in a continuing education<br />

event. 0<br />

1984-85<br />

Theatre Season<br />

Five plays, including a world<br />

premiere by a New York playwright<br />

formerly of Indianapolis, and a<br />

religious musical with book, music,<br />

and lyrics written by local talents<br />

will be included in the 1984-85 theatre<br />

season at <strong>ICU</strong>.<br />

The White House, “a presidential<br />

entertainment,” which seems<br />

especially appropriate this year, will<br />

open on Friday, September 28, at<br />

8:OO p.m. in Ransburg Auditorium.<br />

The production will continue<br />

September 29,30 and October 6<br />

and 7.<br />

In November an original<br />

dramatization of Thomas Wolfe’s<br />

autobiographical novel, You Can’t<br />

Go Home Again, will have its world<br />

premiere here. The play has been<br />

written by <strong>ICU</strong> alumnus Gayle<br />

Stahlhuth, a successful playwright<br />

and actress living in New York City.<br />

Dates are November 9, 10, 11, 16,<br />

17 and 18.<br />

The Good <strong>News</strong>!, another world<br />

premiere being written by several who<br />

were involved in <strong>ICU</strong>’s production<br />

of cotton Patch Gospel, will premiere<br />

on,campus February 8,9, 10,15, 16<br />

and 17, then tour Indiana churches<br />

as a part of the Ministry Through<br />

Drama program.<br />

The annual dinner theatre will be Ayn<br />

Rand’s popular courtroom drama,<br />

At the end of the murder trial, they<br />

will retire to the “jury room” to<br />

decide on a verdict of guilty or not<br />

guilty. Dates are March 15, 16,22,<br />

23 and 24.<br />

During Commencement Week in May<br />

(1 5, 16, 17) the Theatre Department,<br />

in cooperation with the <strong>ICU</strong> Music<br />

Department, will present a musical<br />

comedy that will be announced at a<br />

later date.<br />

Due to a new administrative policy,<br />

this will be the only announcement<br />

of the theatrical season sent to<br />

alumni this year. Please keep this<br />

Scholars<br />

Indiana Central University has<br />

announced that 14 high school<br />

seniors have been named as <strong>Alumni</strong><br />

Scholars in addition to the 22<br />

already named.<br />

<strong>Alumni</strong> Scholars are granted a<br />

monetary award that assures the<br />

student winner of receiving non-<br />

repayable financial assistance from<br />

Indiana Central. This scholarship is<br />

renewable for three years based on<br />

the condition that a minimum grade<br />

point standard set by <strong>ICU</strong> is<br />

maintained.<br />

To be eligible to become an <strong>Alumni</strong><br />

Scholar, a student must be<br />

recommended by an Indiana Central<br />

alumnus and have demonstrated<br />

superior academic achievement and<br />

leadership in school, church and<br />

community affairs.<br />

Jessie M. (Watson) Cummins, a<br />

Columbus, Indiana, resident, reports<br />

that her grandson Joseph Meek is<br />

attending <strong>ICU</strong>. Joe is a junior political<br />

science major.<br />

‘34<br />

Joseph Brice, son of Kenneth F. Brice,<br />

was unanimously elected as “Bandmaster<br />

of the Year” for the state of Colorado.<br />

A. Glen O’Dell has recently been<br />

appointed by Gov. Robert D. Orr to the<br />

Indiana State Commission on the Aged<br />

and Aging for a four-year term. Much<br />

involved in that field, he is presently a<br />

member of the Board of Directors of<br />

Johnson County Council on Agmg as<br />

well as the Greenwood Senior Citizens’<br />

Center. He represents his county on the<br />

Advisory Council of the Central Indiana<br />

Council on Aging. He was recently elected<br />

president of Central Indiana United<br />

Senior Action, a political action<br />

organization of 8000 members. In mid-<br />

June he was assigned to the staff of the<br />

growing Mt. Auburn United Methodist<br />

Church as Director of Senior Ministries.<br />

He and his wife, Gladys, live in<br />

Greenwood, a southern suburb of<br />

Indianapolis.<br />

Kenneth M. Richter, retired professor<br />

emeritus from the University of Oklahoma<br />

School of Medicine, is the father of four<br />

and the grandfather of 12 (6 grandsons<br />

and 6 granddaughters). “All sons and<br />

grandchildren doing well!! So am I.”<br />

At the close of the 1983-84 school year,<br />

Helen (Ringley) Brady retired from<br />

teaching. For the past 29 years, she<br />

taught elementary art at Westlake School<br />

in Indianapolis. She and husband<br />

Malcolm plan to enjoy their leisure and<br />

help with work in the church. ‘Ihe Bradys<br />

are the parents of two boys, both who<br />

attended <strong>ICU</strong> in the early 60s.<br />

Eulala (Graham) Roettger, a retired<br />

department chairperson and social<br />

studies teacher at Connersville Junior<br />

High School, will be spending the 1984-<br />

85 school year at McCurdy School in<br />

Espanola, New Mexico, doing volunteer<br />

work.<br />

Dwight L Smith, professor of history<br />

at Miami University (Ohio), retired after<br />

30 years of service. Smith is author of<br />

‘The History of Canada,” a bibliography<br />

of the history and social science literature<br />

on Canada published in hundreds of<br />

professional journals throughout the<br />

world from 1973-78. It is the eighth<br />

volume on American and Canadian<br />

history that Smith has contributed to the<br />

Clio Bibliography Series.<br />

Congratulations to Sherman A Cravens<br />

and wife Marjorie on their 50th wedding<br />

anniversary. The Cravens’ celebrated<br />

with an open house on June 30 hosted<br />

by members of their family. Dr. Cravens<br />

is a retired United Methodist Minister<br />

and Mrs. Cravens was employed by<br />

United Methodist Communications at<br />

the time of their retirement. They live in<br />

Indianapolis.<br />

After 47 years of teaching fifth and sixth<br />

grades at Lapel School, Theodosia<br />

Everly has retired. She is a resident of<br />

Lapel, Indiana.<br />

Robert B. Hanni, president of the State<br />

and Savings Bank of Monticello, has<br />

been appointed to the 1 1-member State<br />

Board of Education by Governor<br />

Robert D. Orr.<br />

Ivan Moreman retired from IPS as<br />

assistant dean of boys at Tech High<br />

School. Ivan and wife Mary (Ray) ’53<br />

have moved to Indian River, Michigan<br />

to enjoy their retirement.<br />

James Mansfield has joined the<br />

marketing and sales staff of WICAT<br />

Systems, a leading research, development,<br />

and manufacturing firm based in Utah<br />

that specializes in computer-assisted<br />

instruction systems and curriculum for<br />

schools. His areas of responsibility cover<br />

Illinois and Indiana.<br />

John and Betty (Butler) Sinclair are<br />

keeping busy in Sierra Vista, Arizona.<br />

John is in his third year as superintendent<br />

in Sierra Vista Unified School District<br />

and Betty is a teacher in Polominas<br />

School District.<br />

Norma (Barnett) Gaston has been<br />

named the department chairman for<br />

Fine Arts and coordinator of the Positive<br />

Attitude classes at the junior high level<br />

in Decatur Township. Norma and<br />

husband Marion are residents of Camby.<br />

’60<br />

Robert Frey will become dean of<br />

Wilmington College, a Quaker-affiliated<br />

school in Ohio, July 1. He has been a<br />

member of the staff of Lynchburg<br />

College in Virginia.<br />

Lou Hurrle has been named attendance<br />

officer for Hancock-South Madison Joint<br />

Services, after teaching 19 years in<br />

Hancock County schools. Hurrle will<br />

begin his new duties in August. Wife<br />

Suzanne (Clark) ’59 continues to teach<br />

at Greenfield Junior High School. The<br />

Hurrles have two sons.<br />

Marilyn Ramsey, head girls’ basketball<br />

coach at Southport High School, has<br />

announced her retirement from coaching<br />

effective the 1984-85 school year,<br />

concluding a 22-year coaching career at<br />

the IU School of Nursing and Southport.<br />

David and Judith (Danmeyer) Bra& ’63<br />

are now owners of the Computer Store<br />

located in Marion, Indiana. They are<br />

the parents of a son, Clark, who is a<br />

sophomore at Purdue University. David<br />

and Judy take an active part in the<br />

Sweetzer United Methodist Church near<br />

their home.<br />

Jerry L. Symmonds’ daughter Molly,<br />

(age 8), got excited when the mail came<br />

and told him, “Oh Dad, here’s your<br />

Aluminum <strong>News</strong>!” Jerry is a fourth grade<br />

teacher at Westlake Elementary School<br />

in Wayne Township.<br />

Bev (Gorbett) kibold has worked at<br />

McGuire Federal Credit Union,<br />

Wrightstown, New Jersey, since 198 1.<br />

The credit union is the second-largest<br />

in New Jersey dnd has 48,000 members.<br />

Bev and husband John, a retired member<br />

of the USAF, live in Mount Holly, New<br />

Jersey.<br />

R Lee Wolverton has recently accepted<br />

a position with Waycross Molders<br />

Products, Waycross, Georgia, as a staff/<br />

industrial engineer. Lee and wife Carrol<br />

Ann live in Waycross with their family.<br />

Larry J. Barrett, chairman of the board<br />

and chief executive officer of Security<br />

Savings Association, was recently elected<br />

second vice-chairman of the Indiana<br />

League of Savings Institutions. Barrett<br />

has been district director of the league<br />

for four years, and currently is a<br />

member of its political action committee<br />

and of the deposit acquisition committee<br />

of the U.S. League of Savings Institutions.<br />

James Young has been promoted to vice<br />

president division manager of the<br />

Florida Division of Super Food Services,<br />

Inc. Super Foods is a multidivisional<br />

food wholesaler.<br />

Jan David has been named head varsity<br />

basketball coach at DeKalb High School<br />

where he has taught and coached for<br />

seven years. His wife, Jo Ann (Voss) ’7 1,<br />

is a guidance counselor at Eastside High<br />

School in Butler, Indiana. The Davids<br />

live in Auburn with their three sons, Andy,<br />

Nick and Rocky.<br />

Paul and Rosemary Fox observed their<br />

25th wedding anniversary with a Mass<br />

of Thanksgiving in St. James Catholic<br />

Church on Sunday, June 10. The Foxes<br />

were married June 13,1959, and are the<br />

parents of four: Mary Ann, Monica Bova,<br />

Thomas and Andrew. Paul is a counselor<br />

for Catholic Cemeteries Association and<br />

Rosemary teaches and is a department<br />

head at Roncalli High School.<br />

Janice L (Coryell) Faherty has been<br />

promoted to vice president at Merchants<br />

National Bank & Trust Co. She has<br />

been with the company since 1974.<br />

Paul A. Thomas wrote the <strong>Alumni</strong> <strong>News</strong><br />

that he has passed the C.P.A. exam. He<br />

is currently an accountant with Robert<br />

Donovan C.P.A. in Dandle.<br />

Virginia Dailey has retired from<br />

teaching after 18 years in Perry Township.<br />

She taught five years at Southport High<br />

School before becoming part of the<br />

charter faculty of Perry Meridian High<br />

School. Among her many honors in<br />

education was recognition in 1981 as a<br />

Hoosier Teacher of the Year by the<br />

Indiana Council of Teachers of English.<br />

Doug Hattabaugh is now employed as<br />

a pilot with Air One Airline, St. Louis,<br />

and a pilot with the Air Force Reserve<br />

at Grissom Air Force Base in Indiana.<br />

He and his wife Charlotte are residents<br />

of Indianapolis.<br />

“Not Above a Whisper,” the story of<br />

brothea Dk, was presented at the Indiana<br />

Repertory Theater Main Stage June 13.<br />

Gayle Stahlhuth wrote and starred in<br />

“Not Above a Whisper.” In addition, she<br />

authored “Four on Five,” a musical<br />

based on Walt Whitman’s life, and the<br />

play, “Lou,” the story of Louisa May<br />

Alcott. She’s working on an adaptation<br />

of Thomas Wolfe’s “You Can’t Go Home<br />

Again” to premiere in November at <strong>ICU</strong>.<br />

Mick Bridgewater appeared with John<br />

Davidson in Starlight Musical’s<br />

production of “Oklahoma!” July 9-1 5.<br />

The cast of “Oklahoma!,” which also<br />

includes his wife, Judy, will tour for six<br />

weeks to Memphis, Chicago, St. Louis,<br />

Norfolk, Richmond, Cleveland and other<br />

cities. The Bridgewaters are the parents<br />

of three children.<br />

Steve Hurst will become the head<br />

football coach at Noblesville High School<br />

this fall. He was a coach for the North<br />

All-star Football Team this summer.<br />

John Memmer has recently been named<br />

the varsity basketball coach at Attica<br />

High School after having been the varsity<br />

basketball coach at Van Buren High<br />

School in Brazil, Indiana, for the past<br />

five years. While at Van Buren, he<br />

compiled a record of 73 wins and 37<br />

losses and captured a sectional<br />

championship. He has also been named<br />

assistant athletic director and boys’<br />

tennis coach.<br />

Lany A. Musselman, special agent for<br />

The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance<br />

Company, has earned the Chartered Lde<br />

Underwriter (CLU) diploma and<br />

professional designation from the<br />

American College at Bryn Mawr, PA.<br />

Musselman has also been recipient of<br />

the National Quality Award and<br />

National Sales Achievement Award.<br />

Kathy Niccum reports that she is a staff<br />

nurse at Kettering Medical Center in<br />

Kettering, Ohio.<br />

Teny L Taylor, since becoming director<br />

of admissions at Adrian College, has<br />

attended an educational conference on<br />

“Communicating the Value of Higher<br />

Education.” He presented a paper on<br />

personalizing the admissions p. voces<br />

and began a three-year term on the<br />

American Association of Collegiate<br />

Registrars as Midwest representative<br />

and attended the annual meeting in<br />

Denver, Colorado.<br />

Dianne (Sprunger) and Lowell Birkey<br />

are now residing in Kansas City after<br />

spending three years in Central America<br />

serving with Mennonite Central<br />

Committee. They are the proud parents<br />

of Melisa (age 2) and Justin (age 1).<br />

Dianne is currently working at Bethany<br />

Hospital Med. - Surg. Division PRN.<br />

Mary Ann Skaggs has been promoted<br />

to the newly created position of alcohol<br />

education director at the Greater<br />

Indianapolis Council on Alcoholism.<br />

J. Scott Dew, M.D. and Kathy S. Deasy,<br />

M.D., announce the association of<br />

Shirley A. Thomas, M.D. for the practice<br />

of obstetrics and gynecology at The<br />

Medical Towers and Winona<br />

Professional Building.<br />

Dr. Richard stahlhut has recently<br />

moved to Boston, Massachusetts, to<br />

accept a twoyear fellowship to computer<br />

application to medicine at Harvard<br />

University and Massachusetts General<br />

Hospital.<br />

Steve Hodgson has been named as<br />

Cathedral High School’s head basketball<br />

coach. In addition to coaching duties<br />

Steve will continue as dean of students<br />

at Cathedral.<br />

Peter A. McAUister passed his CPA<br />

Examination in November 1982 and<br />

started a CPA partnership with Steven<br />

Ford called McAllister-Ford and<br />

Company located in Indianapolis.<br />

Peggy (Kirkwood) Price, director of<br />

internal audit at Mt. Sinai Hospital in<br />

Miami Beach, Florida, went to Kenya,<br />

Afnca, in July on a photographic safari<br />

to see the migration of the wildebeests.<br />

Reverend Mark Van Deman has received<br />

his master of divinity degree from<br />

Asbury Theological Seminary and has<br />

moved to the Tampa/Brandon (Florida)<br />

area to begin the work of “planting”<br />

Resurrection Community Church. Small<br />

groups are now meeting and Rev. Van<br />

Deman invites area <strong>ICU</strong> alumni to<br />

contact him in Brandon for more<br />

information.<br />

Scott Miles received his MD from the<br />

University of Chicago this spring. Scott<br />

lives in Elmhurst, Illinois.<br />

Dave Miller is with the Hoosier Trails<br />

BSA Council and currently lives in<br />

Aurora, Indiana.<br />

Carolyn M. Casey was ordained as a<br />

minister in the Christian Church

(Disciples of Christ) this spring at First<br />

Christian Church of Mooresville. As a<br />

seminary student, she served as Student<br />

Assistant Minister at Southport Christian<br />

Church from April 1980 to January 1984.<br />

She cumntly serves as Associate Minister<br />

at South Side Christian Church in<br />

Kokomo .<br />

Julie Leak has recently been hired as<br />

the new K-1 Pre-IDEA Resource Teacher<br />

in Perry Township bfted program).<br />

She lives in Indianapolis.<br />

Derek and LaDonna (Riddle) Weber<br />

are finally "back home again, in<br />

Indiana!" Derek has completed a year's<br />

appointment with the Dove Valley Circuit<br />

of the British Methodist Church. He<br />

received his MTh from Perkins School<br />

of Theology in May 1983. He has been<br />

appointed as associate to LaPorte United<br />

Methodist Church where he will begin<br />

in August. While in England, LaDonna<br />

worked as an inventory consultant/<br />

his retirement from Indiana University<br />
