President of Development and
one of The Event, organizers
explained, The Event, has
been all over the world-so-tospeak.
We have had evenings
in Paris, a journey down the
Nile and we have even 'traveled
on the Orient Express.
She added, But this year we
go back in time to the 1970s.
She added, The theme is generating
a lot of enthusiasm- especially
from people who
would like to dust off their
leisure suits and bell bottoms.
Now in its eleventh year,
The Event, is a yearly gala
benefiting the hospital. It has
been listed in the Capital
District Business Review as
one of the most successful
one-day fundraising event in
the region.
The Event will be held
Friday, June 8 under a tent
and within the Pine Brook
Golf Club in Gloversville.
The entire venue has been secured
for the evening.
Starting at 7 p.m., guests
will go back in time with
decor, dance and food reflecting
the 1970s. The planners
even have a few surprises for
party goers.
Perhaps the most anticipated
part of evening as well
as the most closely-guarded is
the menu.
The Event will feature
several food stations. For example,
The Jive Turkey
food station will have split
Cornish game hens with
smoked paprika, fresh sage
and Yukon gold smashed potatoes
with chicken au jus.
And guests will be treated to
Harvey Wall Bangers as they
dance under the disco ball.
The Northville Central School District PTO sponsored a contest for students to submit a
landscaping design for the school entrance near the school library. The PTO felt that that entrance
was rather bare and that it needed some attention. The Board of Education approved the contest,
and the winner of the contest was Taryn Sedon, above, a junior high student at NCS. Taryn’s
innovative design incorporated a unique variety of shrubs and other plants. She will received $200
from the PTO to be used for the purchase of plants and other supplies. Taryn and her dad Carl Sedon
worked on the project over the long Memorial Day weekend in May. The results of their hard work
should flourish over the coming weeks, and the concerted group effort will make a positive
investment in the school.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR Extinguishers, whistles, anchors
Don t call me about the parade
To the editor:
I am going to politely request that people no longer call
me concerning this year s Memorial Day activities in
Broadalbin. Please direct your comments and inquiries to
VFW Post 8690 that sponsored the parade in 2012.
My involvement the parade was limited to honoring
the request of Commander Charles Sweet in providing him
with an updated list of participating groups. I did not prepare,
participate or attend any of the festivities in
Broadalbin that day.
For the first time in many years I did not videotape the
parade, a decision made based on the parking restrictions
and my inability to transport and handle video equipment
and record the placing of the wreath at the monument.
If anyone has a video of the parade they would like me
to air on the public access show that Time Warner Cable
graciously provides for me, I would be glad to do so. I can
not accept digital or camcorder recordings, but can copy
vhs to a dvd which is the format that is accepted.
This offer is applicable to any suitable activity in our
region. I changed the name to Broadalbin s Backyard so I
could feature activities from surrounding communities in
our backyard . In addition to community events and
fundraisers, since 2004 I have been airing music, dance,
art, historical re-enactments, demonstrations, and information
that is interesting or beneficial to the public well
being. Please keep in mind that public access is not for
business advertising and only for non-profits. The show is
also available to air information about your agency and
public service announcements.
The show is uniquely different in that for almost eight
years I have been bringing the camera to the event, I do not
do a live show at the studio. Due to gradual changes in my
physical ability to videotape events as well as my continuing
to endure the financial expense, I am now soliciting
recordings from appropriate venues. Should you have
something for consideration, please email me at broadalbinevents@gmail.com.
Personal flotation gear and signal devices
for use either during the day or night to signal
for help are a good start in making your boat,
safe. However, there are a few additions needed
to complete your inventory. Let s continue
our list of basics.
Fire Extinguishers
There is logic in the rules for fire extinguishers.
They are required where a fire hazard
could be expected from the motors or a
fuel system (New York Safe Boating: A
Course on the Safe Operation of Boats and
Personal Watercraft - 2009)
The fire extinguishers should be (1) approved
by the US Coast Guard and you should
(2) carry sufficient numbers and type based on
the size of your boat i.e. 1 (B-I) boat less than
26 and 2 (B-Is) or 1 (B-II) if the boat is 26 to
less than 40 . Visit your local marina or marine
store for selection help or assistance in
making sure your current extinguishers work.
Don t test fire the extinguisher to see if it
works or you will have nothing to use when
you need it.
Hopefully, you will not have to use your
extinguisher. However, if you do, remember
PASS Pull the pin; Aim at the base of the
flames; Squeeze the handle in short half second
bursts; and Sweep the nozzle from side to
side. Extinguishers don t last forever Ö. you
only have seconds to put out the fire Ö make it
count.
Sound Signaling Devices
How loud can you shout? Sometimes you
need to signal steering intentions when approaching
another boat, when help is needed
or to let someone know where they are when it
is foggy. Wouldn t it be easier to signal with a
whistle or an air horn?
As a matter of fact, a boat under 39 must
carry a sound producing device (a mouth
whistle will work.) and larger boats must carry
a sound producing mechanical appliance. By
the way, an air horn is a simple, inexpensive
way of being heard once you are tired of
blowing your whistle Ö or shouting.
Anchors
One of the many pleasures in boating is to
anchor and enjoy the surroundings. It might be
time for lunch or for a swim but either way,
we have to find a way hopefully to stay in one
spot. New York State requires that all motor-
ized boats must carry an anchor and line of
sufficient weight and strength to provide the
boat with safe anchorage (New York Safe
Boating).
Anchors come in a variety of designs to
improve holding in various lake or sea bottoms.
The Danforth is probably the most frequent
on our lake. Anchors and lines may be
sold as a set and can be matched to your boat
and the conditions.
Everyone should have an introduction to
anchoring. The anchor is always used from the
bow (front) of the boat. Anchors only work
when connected to the boat using an anchor
line (rode). Anchors should not be tossed into
the water but should be released slowly.
Releasing the anchor slowly limits boat damage,
helps to provide time to ensure that it is
connected to the boat and also that no extra
legs or feet are tangled in the anchor line as it
leaves the boat.
The secret in anchoring is that you have
enough line to hold your boat. It is recommended
that in calm or moderate waters there
should be five-to-seven times the distance
from the anchor cleat to the lake bottom. With
a Danforth anchor you can reverse the boat s
engine slightly to set the anchor. More line in
the water is recommended if conditions
change from calm to heavy. Of course, it
might also be a good time to start the engine
and move ashore.
Summary
ON THE WATER
Boats are fun and relatively simple to operate,
however that doesn t mean that education,
preparation and the proper equipment
couldn t improve the experience for everyone.
When you are behind the wheel, you are the
captain. Take the time to learn as much as you
can about boating and the safe operation of
your boat. We can only introduce you to fire
extinguishers, sound signals and anchors, the
rest is up to you. You are in charge.
Catch you on the water.
B-PCS residents
help district plan
for school future
BROADALBIN
Alternative energy, necessary
renovations and the possible
reorganization of the district s
school buildings were among
the possibilities presented
Tuesday, May 29, during the
first of a series of community
meetings planned about the
future of Broadalbin-Perth
Central School District s facilities.
Fifteen people, including
community members, parents
and district staff, heard
Superintendent of Schools
Stephen Tomlinson describe
the work that has been done so
far and outline the work that
still needs to be done by the
district and the community advisory
committee.
Tomlinson explained that
many of the projects under
consideration have the potential
to increase efficiency in
the district and generate significant
savings over the next
15-plus years.
The school budget crisis
that started in 2008 has forced
us to re-examine how we do
business, Tomlinson said. It
would be irresponsible of us
as a district if we didn t consider
options that could save
us a significant amount of
money over the long term.
Although the final decision
on any potential capital
proposal rests with the Board
of Education, Tomlinson says
the district s newly formed
community advisory committee
will help him shape his
final recommendation to the
Board of Education on what -
if anything - the district
should address in a capital
project.
NECESSARY,
SUGGESTED REPAIRS
Broadalbin-Perth completed
its state-mandated
building survey earlier this
year. On Tuesday, Tomlinson
explained that every school
district in New York State is
required to complete this survey
every five years. The
mandate is designed to protect
the community s investment
in its school buildings, ensuring
that district leaders keep
the buildings in good working
order. Broadalbin-Perth s
five-year building survey covers
site (outside the buildings),
architectural, mechanical,
plumbing and electrical
issues identified by the district
s architectural firm,
Ashley-McGraw.
The report from the fiveyear
building survey breaks
down the architect s recommendations
into high-, medium-
and low-priority items.
The architect s findings
ranged in scope and cost,
from compliance with
Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA) signage requirements
(less than $1,000) to replacing
sections of roofing at
both sites (more than $1 million).
Tomlinson explained
that high-priority items represent
immediate safety issues,
while low-priority items are
issues that should be addressed
within the next five
years. The projected cost associated
with addressing all
high-priority items in the
study is approximately $7.5
million; addressing all the issues
in the study would cost
the district approximately $18
million.
One of the reasons
we ve invited the community
to work with us on this is to
help us find a balance,
Tomlinson said. Even though
we get back from the state
more than 80 cents for every
dollar we spend on capital improvements,
$18 million is a
lot of money. We re hoping
that this group of community
members can help us weigh
the relative urgency of the issues
addressed in our building
survey with the community s
ability and willingness to support
our efforts.
ALTERNATIVE ENERGY
For more than a year, district
leaders have talked about
the possibility of utilizing alternative
energy in Broadalbin-Perth.
On Tuesday,
Tomlinson explained that one
of the first options the district
explored, wind energy, has already
been discarded.
The payback period on a
wind turbine at each site
would take too long. So wind
power just doesn t make sense
for Broadalbin-Perth,
Tomlinson said.
However, studies completed
by CNS Engineering
and Ashley-McGraw have
shown that both solar and geothermal
energy have the potential
to lower Broadalbin-
Perth s energy costs significantly.
Sections of roof requiring
replacement or repair could be
fitted with solar panels after
the structural work is completed.
According to the studies,
the district would recoup
ment Supervisor Mel Dopp
said he was called to the scene
by members of the work crew
who discovered
the body
Monday
morning
around 10:30
a.m. Dopp
said he instructed
crew
BRENT ALLING
members not
to touch anything, called 911,
and attempted to secure the
scene by not allowing any other
vehicles into the area as they
waited for authorities to arrive.
Lorey said the body had
some discoloration that could
be bruising, but there were
no wounds that could be attributed
to either a knife or a
gun shot.
Fulton County District
Attorney Louise Sira, who
was also on scene Monday,
said the discoloration could be
attributed to natural processes.
According to Lorey,
Alling s body was found in an
isolated area that is often used
as a turnaround for town vehicles,
including snow plows
and garbage trucks, that service
the dead-end road.
Lorey said approximately
four full-time residences are
located on Tyrell Road, in addition
to several hunting
camps at its upper end. Lorey
identified the area as a popular
party spot, that authorities
have been called to on several
occasions following reports of
loud gatherings.
Though authorities questioned
neighbors in the surrounding
homes, Lorey said
there were no reports of any
suspicious activity in the pre-
The New York State Police Mobil Response Team gathers near the scene Tuesday afternoon.
A Tyrell Road resident did
report a blue pickup truck
coming up the road Monday at
about 7:30 a.m., a truck description
matching that of one
owned by Brent Alling.
People who live on this
road said it s a fairly common
thing [people hanging out in the
area], said Lorey. They don t
pay much attention any more.
Lorey said none of the
victim s clothes were found at
the scene. He speculated that
Alling s dead body was
dumped at the site.
Aiding in the investigation
were multiple leads from
local residents.
We re hoping that there
are people out there with information,
said Sira on
Monday afternoon. Many
leads did help in identifying
Alling.
According to Lorey, the
victim was pronounced dead
at the scene by Fulton County
Coroner Arthur Simmons.
Fulton County District Attorney Louise Sira at the scene Monday.
Alling s body was taken to
Albany Medical Center,
where it was autopsied
Tuesday morning.
Even with the autopsy report,
Lorey said, the cause of
death may still take days to ascertain,
pending the results of toxicology
tests and forensics reports.
By Tuesday, Lorey said
the couple had been together
for at least several years and
he knew of no reports of any
domestic incidents between
the two.
Lorey did say, however,
that Brent Alling had spent
some time in jail, and had a
police record that included
several arrests for assault.
Members of the Fulton
County Sheriff s Office and the
New York State Police began to
gather at the state police barracks
in Mayfield early Tuesday
afternoon, in preparation for
what Lorey had described as a
dangerous operation.
Just after 4 p.m., authorities
attempted to execute a
Carla Kolbe
search warrant on the Delaney
Road home the couple shared.
Before police arrived on
scene, Lorey said Brent Alling
was spotted driving his blue
Dodge pickup truck on Route
30 near the property. He was
pulled over by police on
Christie Road, near the intersection
of Route 30, and taken
into custody without incident.
We had some information
that B. Alling may be resistant
to our presence, Lorey
said, when asked about the
multiple agencies involved in
executing the warrant.
Lorey stressed that Alling
had not been arrested or
charged with anything relating
to the woman s death.
Stopping short of calling
Alling a suspect, Lorey said
the search warrant, and the act
of bringing the man into the
trooper barracks, were simply
an effort to learn more about
what happened to the woman.
Lorey said the death is
being treated as suspicious,
Check out our
online business directory at
but, he said, it has not been labeled
a homicide because
there is no evidence of that
being the case.
Lorey cited an accidental
drug overdose and natural
causes as other possible causes
of the woman s death. If
that is the case, said Lorey, a
misdemeanor charge related
to the improper disposal of a
body would be the extent of
any criminal act.
It could have been anything,
Lorey said.
Lorey said he also believed
whoever left Alling s
body at the Tyrrell Road site,
likely knew the victim well
and wanted her to be found.
It would appear to me
that in this instance, whoever
left the body where it was
wanted her to be easily
found, said Lorey.
Early Tuesday morning,
Lorey said, members of the
Alling family arrived at the state
policy barracks in Mayfield to
report the women missing, saying
they believed she could be
the victim found on Monday.
Lorey said the victim s
fingerprints, taken during
Tuesday morning s autopsy,
later confirmed her identity.
Lorey said the autopsy did
reveal several other findings,
however, that sent state police
forensics investigators back to
the Tyrrell Road site Tuesday
afternoon in a search of further
evidence.
Also as a result of the autopsy,
Lorey said, authorities
determined the victim s time
of death to be approximately
24 to 36 hours before her body
was discovered. J
Local runner is raising money for a good cause
Jim Long, a High School Math
Teacher at Northville Central School
(NCS) will be running in the New Paltz
Challenge 1/2 marathon race this year.
Recently, Jim was challenged to not just
run the race for fun but to use it as an opportunity
to raise funds to support a worthy
cause. Knowing that the Mazzollis
were facing difficult times healthwise
and financially due to extended hospital
stays for both Bill and Fran, Jim partnered
with Sacandaga Helping Hands to
help out the Mazzollis.
Bill as the individual to whom the
yearbook would be dedicated. Jim always
was impressed with Bill s positive attitude
toward life but his respect deepened
greatly as a result of the brief interview.
Bill definitely has a heart for the kids of
NCS.
Jim has been running off and on
since the fall of 2009 when his daughter
motivated the family to add more routine
exercise into their schedule. He has run
several 5K (3.1 miles) races and last year
ran his first 10K. Jim has been training
the cost of installing the solar
panels within five years; each
panel has a usable life of at
least 15 years. The solar plan
outlined in the studies has the
potential of significantly reducing
Broadalbin-Perth s
electricity bills.
While installing geothermal
energy systems at both
sites would require a $6 million
investment, the studies
indicate that the district would
recoup that cost within seven
years; the systems have a minimum
lifespan of 15 years.
The geothermal plan outlined
in the studies could decrease
Broadalbin-Perth s heating
and cooling costs by 75 percent.
The estimates we have
about payback period, lifespan
and savings on energy
costs are only that - estimates,
Tomlinson said.
Technology is changing so
rapidly that, by the time we
would get these systems up
and running, we could be
RECONFIGURING
SCHOOL BUILDINGS
Another option that district
leaders have been considering
for more than a year is
reconfiguring the district s
school buildings so that students
in pre-K through grade 6
would be served at the Perth
site, and students in grades 7-
12 would be served at the
Broadalbin site. Currently,
students in grades 3-8 are
taught in the Perth school
building, while students in
pre-K through grade 2 and
grades 9-12 are taught in
Broadalbin.
On Tuesday this week,
Tomlinson presented several
possibilities developed by
Ashley-McGraw for how the
buildings could be reconfigured.
would be required in what is
Facilities would have to be
At the Perth site, The
school would move into the
current middle school space.
Alack of available parking,
which Tomlinson says has
long been a cause for concern
at the Perth site, could be addressed
by expanding the current
parking lot over the softball
PAYING FOR
ABUILDING PROJECT
Although many issues
identified in the district s fiveyear
building study might
warrant immediate action,
several would require
Broadalbin-Perth to spend
$500,000 to $1 million, or
more - costs that can t be covered
out of the district s $29.5
million operating budget.
Typically, school districts in
New York State take out a
loan in the form of a serial
bond to pay for building projects,
such as repairs or new
construction. The process for
a school district to secure a
bond takes about 18 months,
By JAIME STUDD
For the Express
PERTH Perth town officials
are poised to consider whether to
institute a new local law that that
would make disorderly conduct a
violation.
Doing so, said town attorney
Carmel Greco, would allow him
more leeway when prosecuting
violators of the town s zoning
code, while still being able to
ensure that the town, and not the
state, benefits from any fines
imposed.
Greco brought the matter before
the Perth Town Board at its
regular monthly meeting, on May
3, and is currently in the process
of drafting the law for the board s
approval.
Greco said he has had several
recent cases in which he saw fit
which is why Broadalbin-
Perth is beginning the conversation
now, Tomlinson said.
New York state law requires
that school districts obtain
voter approval before taking
out a bond; if the district decides
to move forward with a
capital project, residents
would likely vote on a proposal
in February 2013.
For every dollar
Broadalbin-Perth spends on a
voter-approved building project,
it receives at least 80
cents back from the state in
the form of building aid. That
would leave the district responsible
for approximately
20 percent of the cost of a
building project.
That s where the alternative
energy systems might
come in, Tomlinson said. By
using solar and geothermal
energy, Tomlinson says B-P
could cut its annual energy
bill in half. Broadalbin-Perth
has budgeted $820,000 for
electricity, fuel oil and natural
gas for the 2012-13 school
year. Tomlinson hopes the
savings generated from alternative
energy could help offset
the local share of a capital
project; once the systems have
been paid for, the savings
could be reinvested into educational
programs.
NEXT STEPS
Three more meetings of
the facilities community advisory
committee have been
to offer violators of the town s
zoning code a plea bargain, in
order to reduce the charge from a
misdemeanor, which would
appear on an individual s
permanent record, to a violation,
which would not. Traditionally,
such cases are reduced to a
charge of disorderly conduct,
Greco said.
Because the town lacks a local
law against disorderly conduct,
fine money that would have gone
to the town from a zoning code
violation is instead paid to the
state.
All violations of the town
zoning law are misdemeanors,
which means that if a person
were to enter a guilty plea to a
violation of any of the sections of
the zoning law, they would get a
criminal record, Greco said.
That is kind of harsh in cases
s calendar is finalized, and
supplemental meetings may be
Tomlinson said he expects the
facilities committee to complete
its work by December.
We re still in the very
options and identifying what
could and should be addressed
Tomlinson said. I encourage
local laws.
We really don t have any
lesser offenses that people could
plea to that would not give them
a criminal record, he added.
What I m trying to do is have
the town create some minor
violations such as disorderly
conduct or littering, that people
can plea to on the town level, and
then this way the total amount of
the fine money would stay in the
town, rather then go to the state
of New York.
While the situation does not
occur often, Greco said the issue
has arisen in several recent cases,
prompting him to bring it to the
board s attention.
It just makes more sense for
situations that involve initial
violations of laws that are town
laws that have nothing to do with
the state of New York, Greco
said.
According to supervisor Greg
Fagan, violations of the town s
zoning codes are becoming an
increasing frequent occurrence.
Greco said he is considering
drafting local law against either
disorderly conduct or littering, or,
possibly, both, in attempt to
remedy the discrepancy. If he
decides to provide both
disorderly conduct and littering
as options, he said it could either
be done individually or as a
single law.

haven t had the opportunity to visit
the museum, or if it s been a few years
since you did so, plan on visiting this
14,000 square foot gem soon.
A new addition to the facility is
the New York Outdoorsman Hall of
located at the rear of the museum s
gift shop area, in its own separate display
room.
Admission to the museum itself is
a modest $10 per person, though access
the gift shop and the Hall of
Fame are free. In the museum you ll
see over 100 mounts of various game
animals including one of the most impressive
displays of record book racks
that s to be found anywhere else, including
the Milo Hansen world record
For the Express
JOHNSTOWN For the
athletes from Fonda-
Fultonville, the second day of
the Section II track and field
state qualifier meet at Knox
Field was a charmed one.
For the participants from
Broadalbin-Perth, Friday was
a rough one.
After a pair of B-P athletes
Austin Becker (800meter
run) and MacKenzie
Ottati (400-meter hurdles)
qualified to compete at this
week s Division 2 (small
schools) state championships
in Syracuse, head coach Jeff
Richards squad was shut out
last Friday from garnering
more qualifiers.
We had a lot of thirdplace
finishes today,
Richards said, a resigned tone
to his voice. At the state qualifier
meet, a first-place (or potentially)
a second-place finish
is needed to advance to the
state championships; if a
given athlete secures a certain
score or time, but finishes in
second place, the competitor
still can qualify for the state
championships.
One of F-F s qualifiers
Friday did so by way of a second-place
finish, as sopho-
trements, including firearms, old fishing
and trapping gear and much more.
A leisurely stroll through the museum,
with stops to read some of the descriptive
plaques, can take you several
hours, so it ll be time well spent. The
museum is located a few hundred feet
south of the intersection of Routes 30
and 29 and features plenty of parking
space.
FREE FISHING DAYS
Don t forget that the weekend of
Saturday and Sunday, June 23 and 24,
just a few weeks from now, will be
this year s Free Fishing Days here in
New York State. Anglers will need no
fishing license that weekend, though
all other rules and regulations such as
creel limits, minimum sizes, no trespassing,
etc. will continue to apply.
That ll be a great weekend to introduce,
or reintroduce, a non-fishing
friend or family member to the sport.
Take advantage of it. It s a great opportunity.
This Free Fishing Days program
started in 1991 and has proven
to be very popular with anglers wishing
to sample the excellent fishing
New York State offers.
CONTEST RESULTS
Dave Allen of Dave s Bait &
Tackle Shop, Bunker Hill, Mayfield,
has announced the results of his
monthly fishing contest for
May.George Albert of Rotterdam took
first and second place honors in the
more Lindsay Therrien s time
of 16.26 seconds in the 100meter
hurdles was fast enough
to move her on to next week s
statewide event despite a second-place
finish.
Therrien, Fonda-
Fultonville head coach Mark
Therrien s daughter, had
missed going to the state
championships in the event by
a tenth of a second last year.
When she drew lane
three today, she knew she was
in the hunt, Mark Therrien
said.
She might have known it
a little too well the head
coach said his pre-race job
was keeping her emotions
steady.
I had to keep her calm so
she wouldn t screw up, said
Mark Therrien with a laugh.
As expected, F-F s Sarah
Wyzomirski earned a firstplace
finish and a trip to the
state championships in the
shot put. The senior s best
throw reached 36 feet, 4 inches
more than two feet past
the second-place finisher.
She s a senior, so it s just
great that she made it,
Therrien said.
Also for F-F, the 4x800meter
relay team of Tyler
Angioli, Cameron Gilligan,
Matt Hoffman and Mike Scott
took first place with a time of
eight minutes, 11.47 seconds,
and qualified for the state
walleye division of the event with 22
1/8 inch and 21 1/8 inch entries, followed
in third place by Luke Olsen of
Northville with a 21 incher.
Chris Barth of Edinburg took first
place in the northern pike segment of
the event with a 33 1/2 incher, followed
by Jim Haley of Edinburg with
a 26 1/4 incher, and George Albert of
Rotterdam with a 24 1/2 incher. In the
trout division, Brian Graham took first
place with an 18 1/4 inch entry, followed
by George Albert of Rotterdam
in second and third places with 16 3/4
inch and 16 1/2 inch entries.
Two prizes were awarded in the
yellow perch division and George
Albert of Rotterdam also took both of
them with 13 1/2 inch and 12 inch entries.
Ted Kroup of Gloversville took
first and second places in the pickerel
portion of the event with 22 1/8 inch
and 21 inch entries. The third place
winner in that division was Luke Olsen
of Northville with a 19 1/2 incher.
The monthly contest continues
this month and I ll have the results for
you in my July 7 column. If you d like
additional information about this
monthly competition you re invited to
FISHING CONTEST
Here s another reminder that the
Great Sacandaga Lake Fisheries
Federation s 21st annual Summer
Fishing Contest will be held on
championships.
Gilligan, a sophomore,
ran the opening leg for the
team, a departure from the
past for the relay team.
We wanted him to run first
to make sure he was in a pack
and pushing it, said Therrien.
He kept it close enough and
we knew the other three would
be able to pick it up.
The decision to put the
team s youngest member in
the opening slot caused some
worry to the team s veterans,
but F-F assistant coach Mike
Benton, who works with the
relay team, said the move paid
off for the team.
[Gilligan] was a bit of an
unknown quantity, but he performed
really well today,
Benton said.
B-P s top competitors performed
well, too, but Opal
Broadalbin-Perth sending two to state qualifiers
Michael Kelly
Broadalbin-Perth’s Opal Jessica Bogdan competes in the 2,000meter
steeplechase last Friday on the second day of the Section
II track and field state qualifier meet at Knox Field in Johnstown.
the top two in their respective
steeplechases, and thus did
not qualify for the state championships.
Can t be mad at the
kids, said B-P s Richards.
They competed. They didn t
lose it; they just got beat. It
wasn t their day.
Bogdan and Ferguson
each finished in third place,
one away from where they
need needed to be to reach the
state championships.
Ferguson, a senior, had
one final shot to make it to the
state championships, as he
competed in the 4x400-meter
relay. The Patriot team ran a
season-best time of 3 minutes,
30.64 seconds, but finished in
third place and did not qualify.
They all ran their hearts
out to try and get Justin to
states, said Richards. I m
really upset for Justin right
now. J
