The Air Force Honor Guard Mobile
Training Team from Bolling Air
Force, D.C., sent three instructors
to Davis-Monthan Sept.22 through
Oct. 1 to train D-M’s honor guard
on the proper techniques to perform
colors, firing party and pallbearing
duties at funerals.
The instructors were Tech. Sgt.
Toby Farr, NCO n charge of the
training flight, Tech. Sgt. Jason Estrada,
NCO in charge of the base
Honor Guard training program
and Senior Airman Joshua Malyemezian,
an accomplished “body
bearer,” who has carried the coffins
of President Gerald Ford, Lady Bird
Johnson and Chief Master Sgt. of
the Air Force Gary Pfingston.
All members of the D-M Honor
Guard were released from their
normal-duty stations to participate
in the training.
“We hold these classes to standardize
all military honors,” Sergeant
Estrada said. “We spent time
going over all the details for a fullhonors
funeral.”
Airmen spent one day learning
proper wear and upkeep of their
uniform and were then separated
into three groups for the next six
duty days, spending two days each
in pall-bearing, colors and firing
party.
In order for Airmen to graduate,
they must be in attendance for 90
percent of classes and pass all evaluations
with no errors.
The class concluded with a ceremony
where graduates performed
a mock active-duty, full-honors funeral
in front of wing and squadron
leadership using the skills they were
Parade kicks off Annual National Fire Prevention Week
Story and photo by Airman 1st Class
Jamie L. Coggan
355th Fighter Wing Public Affairs
The Davis-Monthan Fire and Emergency Services
Flight hosted a "Fire Prevention Week Parade"
here Oct. 4, featuring a variety of different
fire trucks, to kick off the Annual National Fire
Prevention Week Campaign.
Fire Prevention Week runs from Oct. 5 to Oct.
11 and is designated by Presidential Proclamation
annually. The Davis-Monthan Fire Department
uses Fire Prevention Week to host local activities
and events to educate the public and raise awareness
of key fire safety issues.
The theme for Fire Prevention Week 2008 is
"Prevent Home Fires." During this year's fire safety
campaign, firefighters and safety advocates will be
spreading the word about the dangers associated
with fires in the home.
Fire Prevention Week is actively supported by
fire departments across the country. For 86 years,
fire departments have observed Fire Prevention
Week, making it the longest running public health
and safety observance on record.
"Helping the base populace prevent fires and
injuries in their homes are key goals that drive the
process we follow in fire protection," said D-M Fire
Chief Scott Cline. "Fire Prevention Week is one of
the times during the year that we concentrate our
efforts to reach out to the community and provide
up close and personal fire safety education."
According to the National Fire Protection Association,
fire departments responded too nearly
400,000 home fires in 2006 resulting in 2,580 civilian
deaths, 12,500 civilian injuries and $6.8 billion
in direct damage.
"The goal of the Davis-Monthan Fire Department
is to help local residents focus on fire and life
safety issues in the home by educating residents in
how to identify and correct fire hazards where we
live," said Mr. Raymond LeClair, assistant chief of
fire prevention. "This year's theme is designed to
educate residents in identifying and correcting fire
hazards in their homes. Fire safety is more than
education -- it's an attitude that could save the lives
of your families."
Reviewing the information below and following
the recommended actions can help to save lives.
Home Fire Safety Checklist:
· Portable space heaters are off whenever a grownup
leaves the room and goes to sleep
· Portable space heaters are 3 feet away from anything
that can burn
· Curtains and other things that can burn are away
from the stovetop
· All extension cords are used safely (not under
carpets or across walking areas)
· Electrical cords are in good condition (not damaged)
· Appliances and lights are plugged into separate
electrical outlets
· All smoke alarms work when tested by a grownup
· All escape routes are clear of clutter and easily
accessible
· The clothes dryer has a clean vent and filter (no
lint build-up)
· A grown-up always stays in the kitchen whenever
food is cooking on the stovetop
"We often hear from residents who have experienced
a fire in their home, and they could not
recall if they turned off the stove," said Mr. LeClair.
"With our busy lives, the safety of our homes and
families are sometimes relegated to the back of
our minds, an afterthought as we hop in the car to
start the day. We hope that Fire Prevention Week
will prompt the members of the Davis-Monthan
community to prevent home fires."
The schedule of D-M events during Fire Prevention
Week is as follows:
Friday, Oct. 10, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. - Child safety
car seat inspection at the Base Exchange parking
lot.
Sunday, Oct. 12, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. - Fire truck
static display at the BX parking lot, along with
blood-pressure checks, public information, detection
and suppression items, and fire extinguisher
demonstrations.
For more information, contact the Davis-Monthan
Fire Prevention office at 228-6027.
Editor’s note: The Davis-Monthan Fire and Emergency Services
Flight contributed to this story.
Fire trucks drive around the base Oct. 4 during the Fire Prevention Week Parade that kicked off the Annual National Fire Prevention Week Campaign. The parade featured a variety of
different style fire trucks.
On 21 August, Lt. Gen. Norman
Seip, the Twelfth Air
Force (Air Forces Southern)
commander, was awarded the
“Medalla al Mérito Aeronáutico,”
or “Medal of Aeronautical
Merit,” from the Commander
in Chief of the Uruguayan Air
Force, Gen. Enrique Bonelli.
The decoration was accepted in
tribute to the men and women
of Air Forces Southern and the
ongoing commitment, cooperation
and friendship Davis-Monthan
based Airmen demonstrate
in Uruguay.

‘Medalla al Mérito ‘Aeronáutico’
The AFSOUTH commander
explained that the medal and
accompanying citation were
bestowed in recognition of decades
of cooperation between
Air Force Airmen and Airmen
of the “Fuerza Aérea Uruguaya”,
or Uruguayan Air Force.
The citation to accompany
the award affirms the sentiment,
stating directly, “Due to the continued
efforts taken to increase
the ties of friendship and cooperation
among the Air Forces.”
The citation features the seal
of the Uruguayan ministry of
defense and the roundel of the
Uruguayan Air Force along with
the signature of the President of
Uruguay, Dr. Tabaré Vazquez.
The citation and medal will soon
be on display at the Twelfth Air
Force headquarters.
“This recognition belongs to
each and every Airman serving
in Twelfth Air Force,” said Gen.
Seip. “These professionals are
committed to working with our
friends in Uruguay to prepare
for the challenges of military
service.”
The mutual respect between
the Air Force leaders was evident
during the recent visit. Gen.
Seip unveiled a new program to
continue partnership with Uruguay’s
growing Air Force while
General Bonelli admired the
professionalism of US Air Force
noncommissioned officers and
stressed the importance of programs
to develop NCO careers.
“The Uruguayan Air Force
has been an incredible host for
our delegation,” said Gen. Seip.
“During the trip, our team was
able to discuss future engagements
in the region and listen
to the issues facing our counterparts.”
Gen. Seip’s new initiative begins
in October.
More than 70 Airmen from
across the Air Force will participate
in the first-ever “Operation
Southern Partner,” spending a
week working alongside Uruguayan
Air Force Airmen and
three neighboring nations during
focused subject matter ex-
5
changes. The exchanges involve
Airmen from more than 25 military
specialties including maintenance,
logistics, public affairs,
search and rescue, professional
military education and family
readiness. In addition, Airmen
will donate dozens of hours to
help improve community centers
within Montevideo, the nation’s
capital city.
“Following this honor, we’re
excited to debut OSP with Uruguayan
Airmen,” said General
Seip. “OSP is another example
of how AFSOUTH’s cooperation
with Airmen of the Uruguayan
Air Force will continue — we’re
looking forward to many more
years of partnership.”

Snowbird offers desert training
Story and photo by Capt. Gabe Johnson
162nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs
Before leaving the wet grasslands of Northern
Ireland for the arid deserts of Iraq, the Royal Air
Force’s 230 Tiger Squadron will train at the 162nd
Arizona Air National Guard as part of Operation
Snowbird from Oct. 3 through Oct. 17.
The squadron’s 60 Airmen brought with them
two RAF Puma helicopters from Belfast International
Airport for essential training in preparation
for their upcoming deployment to Baghdad
International Airport. The unit will soon depart
for a two-month rotation, a normal tour length for
RAF squadrons.
Operation Snowbird, an Arizona Air National
Guard detachment at D-M, hosts a diverse array
of aircraft visiting Southern Arizona; their last
stop before deployment.
“Here we have perfect conditions,” said RAF
Squadron Leader Simon Elsey, a Puma pilot. “We
need high temperatures and soft sand which is
what we get here.”
Their primary objective is to practice landings
in the desert sand to gain confidence during
brownouts, a situation unique to helicopters when
dust overtakes the aircraft from behind reducing
visibility. Pilots have compared landing during
brownouts to parallel parking an automobile with
eyes closed.
“Each pilot in the squadron will practice about
30 to 40 landings while we’re here and that experience
will be invaluable to us in Iraq,” said Elsey.
The RAF visits Snowbird roughly six times per
year. This visit is Elsey’s second, and his brother,
a Tornado navigator, has visited several times as
well. Like all Snowbird visitors, they share the
wealth of good weather and vast training ranges
with D-M’s resident A-10s.
“I first came to Snowbird in August for training
and I really like Tucson.” he said. “My brother told
me how great it was to fly here. It’s not just for the
weather and airspace, it’s also the people.
“It is astounding! In the nine years I’ve been in
the air force, and in all the detachments I’ve been
to, I’ve never see any support like this. Day or
night, no matter what the problem, we know help
is just a phone call away.”
As hosts, Guard and active duty Airmen coordinate
airspace, airfield logistics, billeting, communications,
weapons and maintenance issues.
“Since 9/11, Snowbird and Davis-Monthan
have worked together to provide realistic pre-deployment
training to Air National Guard, active
duty and international flying units,” said Lt. Col.
Jeff Butler, Operation Snowbird commander.
“We also make sure they understand the base’s
traffic patterns and noise abatement procedures,”
said Colonel Butler. “All of our allies, especially the
U.K., fly and fight right along side us in the War on
Terror. They’re good partners and friends so we
take excellent care of them when they’re here.”
ACC maintainers expedite A-10 inspection actions
By Master Sgt. Steven Goetsch
Air Combat Command Public Affairs
LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE,
Va. (AFPN) — Air Combat Command
maintenance Airmen will begin an immediate
inspection of all A-10 Thunderbolt
II aircraft with thin-skinned wings
for cracking following a Time Compliance
Technical Order issued to ACC A-
10 units Oct. 3.
Air Combat Command officials are
working closely with those in Air Force
Materiel Command and other combat
Air Force major commands to address
all of the thin-skin winged A-10s with a
priority focus being the A-10s currently
in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.
There are later models of the A-10
that have thicker-skinned wings.
“The TCTO was released very early
this morning and ACC maintainers have
been actively complying with the requirements
of that TCTO,” said Lt. Col.
David Trucksa, ACC A3 chief of flight
management, “and the jets that were affected
were pulled off the schedule and
they are not flying as the maintainers are
setting up their inspections and pressing
forward.”
Air Force flying and combat operations
are inherently dangerous, ACC
officials said. Aircrew and maintenance
personnel mitigate risk by continuously
applying Operational Risk Management
principles.
“The ACC maintainers will never provide
an airplane to a pilot that is known
to be unsafe,” said Colonel Trucksa. “It
will meet all safety standards.”
Because of intense cross-checking
of maintenance operations, Colonel
Trucksa said he has full confidence in
the inspection process.
Air Combat Command has 56 A-10
aircraft affected by this AFMC-issued
TCTO. This risk is of great concern to
ACC officials and is representative of a
systemic problem of an aging Air Force
fleet, they say.
“The airframe is 28 years old on average,”
said Major David Ruth from
the ACC A-10 Weapons System Team.
“Every weapons system has fatigue of
some type. It’s just a matter of identifying
it ahead of time and mitigating that
through scheduled depot inspections
and maintenance.”
As the aircraft are getting older, they
will have different problems in different
areas, said Colonel Trucksa.
“It’s just a concern if the jet doesn’t
meet the standards of safety,” he said.
Air Combat Command A-10s will
not be cleared for operational status until
they have been inspected and any discrepancies
found have been repaired or
cleared. Command maintenance planners
will work with AFMC experts on a
timeline for repairs.
The location, size and orientation
of cracks identified will determine the
length of time aircraft are down.
After engineers analyzed data, they
determined the number of flight hours
it took for the wing to suffer critical
crack length.
“They apply a safety factor that basically
guides them in developing the
TCTO,” said Major Ruth. “This drives
the current 450 flight hours in the current
TCTO.”
Depot personnel who were working
on a repair regarding the A-10’s thickskin
fleet identified the cracks on the
thin-skin aircraft that drove the depot
to evaluate crack criticality and identification
of the thin-skin aircraft that are
affected.
“For the thin-skin fleet, they did fatigue
testing over the years,” said Major
Ruth. “We are programmed to replace
the thin-skins beginning in fiscal year
2010 through FY 2016. We already have
contracts to replace those.”
Six A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft assigned to the 357th fighter squadron at Davis-Monthan,
prepare to deploy during a local. The 355 Wing simulated deploying 836 personnel, 504
short tons of cargo, and launched 24 Aircraft.
To maintain combat readiness and
support, ACC maintainers are working
diligently with inspection data to minimize
the impact this critical ground
support aircraft provides to the warfighter.
“Right now we are looking at courses
of action,” said Major Ruth. “We do
have some capability within the mission
design series, within the A-10 fleet to
meet AOR commitments.”
Major Ruth explained that ACC officials
are determining the proper courses
of action needed to keep the A-10 combat
ready for USCENTCOM requirements.
Airmen of the 23rd Equipment Maintenance Squadron make preparations to inspect for cracks within the wing frame of a A-10C Thunderbolt model grounded here
Oct. 4. After identifying structural cracks on thin skinned A-10s and A-10C Thunderbolt models the Air Combat Command has issued a systematic grounding of
certain affected airframes by corresponding tail number. The risk of structural damage to wings of A-10 models was discovered at Hill Air Force Base, UT.

Questions and answers about organic
What is organic?
Organic refers to the way agricultural products—
food and fiber—are grown and processed. Organic
food production is based on a system of farming that
maintains and replenishes soil fertility without the
use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers.
Organic foods are minimally processed without
artificial ingredients, preservatives, or irradiation to
maintain the integrity of the food.
Is there an official definition of “organic”?
The following excerpt is from the definition of
“organic” that the National Organic Standards
Board adopted in April 1995: “Organic agriculture
is an ecological production management system that
promotes and enhances biodiversity, biological cycles
and soil biological activity. It is based on minimal use
of off-farm inputs and on management practices that
restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony.”
What does “Certified Organic” mean?
“Certified Organic” means the item has been
grown according to strict uniform standards that are
verified by independent state or private organizations.
Certification includes inspections of farm fields and
processing facilities, detailed record keeping, and
periodic testing of soil and water to ensure that growers
and handlers are meeting the standards which have
been set.
Can any type of agricultural product become
certified organic?
Yes, any agricultural product that meets third-party
or state certification requirements may be considered
organic. Organic foods are becoming available in an
impressive variety, including pasta, prepared sauces,
frozen juices, frozen meals, milk, ice cream and
frozen novelties, cereals, meat, poultry, breads, soups,
chocolate, cookies, beer, wine, vodka and more.
These foods, in order to be certified organic, have
all been grown and processed according to organic
standards and must maintain a high level of quality.
Organic fiber products, too, have moved beyond Tshirts,
and include bed and bath linens, tablecloths,
napkins, cosmetic puffs, feminine hygiene products,
and men’s, women’s and children’s clothing in a wide
variety of styles.
Who regulates the certified organic claims?
The federal government set standards for the
production, processing and certification of organic
food in the Organic Food Production Act of 1990
(OFPA). The National Organic Standards Board was
then established to develop guidelines and procedures
to regulate all organic crops. The U. S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) during December 2000 unveiled
detailed regulations to implement OFPA. These
took effect on April 21, 2001, with an 18-month
implementation period ending October 2002. At
that time, any food labeled organic must meet these
national organic standards. USDA’s National Organic
Program oversees the program.
Are all organic products completely free of
pesticide residues?
Certified organic products have been grown and
handled according to strict standards without toxic and
persistent chemical inputs. However, organic crops
are inadvertently exposed to agricultural chemicals
that are now pervasive in rain and ground water due
to their overuse during the past fifty years in North
America, and due to drift via wind and rain.
Do organic farmers ever use pesticides?
Prevention is the organic farmer’s primary strategy
for disease, weed, and insect control. By building
healthy soils, organic farmers find that healthy plants
are better able to resist disease and insects. Organic
producers often select species that are well adapted
for the climate and therefore resist disease and pests.
When pest populations get out of balance, growers
will try various options like insect predators, mating
disruption, traps, and barriers. If these fail, permission
may be granted by the certifier to apply botanical or
15
other nonpersistent pest controls under restricted
conditions. Botanicals are derived from plants and are
broken down quickly by oxygen and sunlight.
How will purchasing organic products help keep
our water clean?
Conventional agricultural methods can cause
water contamination. Beginning in May 1995, a
network of environmental organizations, including
the Environmental Working Group, began testing
tap water for herbicides in cities across the United
States’ Corn Belt, and in Louisiana and Maryland.
The results revealed widespread contamination of
tap water with many different pesticides at levels that
present serious health risks. In some cities, herbicides
in tap water exceed federal lifetime health standards
for weeks or months at a time. The organic farmer’s
elimination of polluting chemicals and nitrogen
leaching, in combination with soil building, works to
prevent contamination, and protects and conserves
water resources.
Is organic food better for you?
There is mounting evidence at this time to suggest
that organically produced foods may be more
nutritious. Furthermore, organic foods and fiber
are spared the application of toxic and persistent
insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and fertilizers.
Many EPA-approved pesticides were registered long
before extensive research linked these chemicals to
cancer and other diseases. In the long run, organic
farming techniques provide a safer, more sustainable
environment for everyone.
Why does organic food sometimes cost more?
Prices for organic foods reflect many of the same
costs as conventional items in terms of growing,
harvesting, transportation and storage. Organically
produced foods must meet stricter regulations
governing all of these steps, so the process is often
more labor- and management-intensive, and farming
tends to be on a smaller scale. There is also mounting
evidence that if all the indirect costs of conventional
food production—cleanup of polluted water,
replacement of eroded soils, costs of health care for
farmers and their workers—were factored into the
price of food, organic foods would cost the same or,
more likely, be cheaper.
Isn’t organic food just a fad?
U. S. sales of organic food and beverages have
grown from $1 billion in 1990 to an estimated
$20 billion in 2007. The market for these goods is
projected to reach nearly $23.6 billion in 2008, and
grow an average of 18% each year from 2007-2010.
The adoption of national standards for certification is
expected to open up new markets for U. S. organic
producers. Internationally, organic sales continue to
grow as well.
The Organic Trade Association is the leading
business association representing the organic industry
in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Its 1700
members include growers, processors, shippers,
retailers, certification organizations and others
involved in the business of producing and selling
certified organic products.
Military Health System asks for feedback
from wounded, ill or injured
service members and their families
WASHINGTON — The Military Health
System invites wounded, ill or injured service
members and their families to respond
to a new pair of questionnaires designed
to help MHS leaders better understand the
needs and expectations of the warriors in
their care.
The questionnaires—one for wounded,
ill or injured service members and one for
their family members—are available on the
Military Health System Web site beginning
today and will remain open for completion
until October 15. Both questionnaires ask
for feedback concerning a service member’s
experience and satisfaction with the
care he or she has received since becoming
wounded, ill or injured.
improving but MHS leaders recognize that
there is still more to be done. By listening
