Presidential Inauguration is an historical
event By al Cromley Barcroft News Staff
Going to the Obama inaugural?
How would you like to go with 30 or 40
school kids?
Two D.C. tour guides in Lake Barcroft
face that frightening prospect. They have
done presidential inaugurals with kids
before, but not as chaotic as this one
threatens to be.
The advice of Shirley Timashev, of Potterton
Drive, is “stay away,” but she is
going as a guide.
Also guiding will be Ed Donnelly, of Blair
Road, who said, “go as early as possible.”
at its final meeting of the year,
the LBA Board reviewed and voted
unanimously to approve the 2009 budget
as presented by Treasurer Jerry Mendenhall.
The two largest categories of
interest continue to be water safety and
maintenance/improvements. A detailed
explanation of the budget will be presented
during the Association’s Annual
Meeting. The Board also reviewed a
report containing proposed changes and
clarifications presented by the Ad Hoc
Committee on Beach Rules. More in-
“I’m glad I’m not working,” said tour
guide Randa Mendenhall, of Mansfield
Road. A thought echoed by Tour Guide
Liz Christian, of Lakeview Drive.
Timashev adds, “choose to see either
the inauguration (at the west side of
the Capitol) or the parade. You can’t do
both.” This year she will have a bus load
of eighth graders from Texas, Illinois and
Arizona.
Last time at the second George W. Bush
inauguration she found that the viewing
stands, “were pretty well cleared out after
Last month’s newsletter featured an article
about the Futures Committee written
by members Jerry Mendenhall, Lisa
Levine and George McLennan. The article
indicated that as part of its research,
the Committee will be seeking input via
a community survey which you will receive
in the mail this month. We all have
Ed Donnelly
a stake in the future of our neighborhood
and I urge you to take a few minutes to
respond to the survey.
Elsewhere in this newsletter you will find
the biographies of those who are seeking
election to the LBA Board. Thanks go to
Stuart Feldstein for chairing the Nominating
Committee and to Joel Gregorio,
who served as Committee members.
Matt and Suzanne Friedman
By Kim I. Mills Barcroft News Staff
Matt and Suzanne Friedman put
the contract on their Lake Barcroft
home in February 2004, one
month before their wedding. “We knew
almost nothing about the community,”
Matt said. “We just liked the house.”
In fact, they were barely aware that there
was a Lake (maybe because they were a
little busy with wedding plans!). “The
day we put the contract on the house,
we went to Beach 3,” Suzie recalled. “It
was a warm day and people were on the
beach. We walked up to two families
with kids and asked, ‘Is this a familyfriendly
neighborhood?’ They looked
at us like we were a little crazy. ‘Do you
know where we are?’ one of the women
said. ‘This is Lake Barcroft!’”
Good thing for the Friedmans. In February
2006, they became the parents of twins
Conor and Julia (whose photo in a pumpkin
patch graces the month of October in
the 2009 Lake Barcroft calendar). Their
dog Toby rounds out the household.
HOMe StOry/CareerS
Matt and Suzie met at a block party in
their Alexandria neighborhood in 2001.
“Matt and I lived nine doors away from
each other in a townhouse community,
but hadn’t met because of his travel
schedule,” Suzie said.
Matt grew up in Ireland and Pennsylvania,
Suzie is originally from San Diego. “I
moved here in ’91 to work for the Navy in
a civilian job,” she said. “I never intended
to stay. San Diegans never move.”
Suzie still works for the Navy, doing communications
and strategic planning for
the civilian science and engineering organization.
Matt is a principal consultant at
Mitre Corp but in his free time (such as
it is, with toddler twins), he runs a home
audio/visual design business, installing
high-end systems, and frequently invites
neighbors over to help test out equipment
in his home theater. Matt is also a
budding real estate developer, partnering
with Lake resident Gabe Nasser on a
stunning new home project on Lakeview
The Friedmans got right into the swing
of Lake Barcroft upon moving in. Just a
week after landing, they went to their first
was all the people had seen of the president.”
Ed Donnelly, who has been a guide at
every presidential inaugural since George
H. W. Bush’s in 1989 (and “never lost a
kid”), said security is a bigger problem
with each inaugural, and this one promises
to be horrendous.
At the last inaugural “anti-Bush protesters
blockaded security gates and kept us
from seeing the parade,” Donnelly said.
The biggest problem is usually the cold.
On one occasion he had charge of kids
from Hawaii and Alaska. The kids from
Hawaii were freezing, and the kids from
Alaska (where they go out for recess until
the mercury is at minus 20 degrees) gave
the shiverers their coats.
“Be prepared for the coldest possible
weather,” said Timashev. (This reporter
“I like how it’s a community, but it’s not elitist. When you go
to our community events, it’s multigenerational – newlyweds,
older couples, gay people – we’re so glad Conor and Julia are
Forget about driving. And if the Metro
is jammed, take a train going away from
D.C. and get on at a more remote station,
a move which Timashev said she
has used.
Sometimes tour guides luck out. Donnelly
did at the 1995 inaugural, when
his fifth and sixth graders had tickets on
the lawn at the Capitol just behind the
seated area. Some people standing just
behind the seats parted so that Donnelly
could “hoist my kids one by one on my
shoulders so they could see.”
If you are not close enough to see the
swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol,
there will be giant screens, jumbotrons,
in many places on the mall.
Mendenhall said the influx of visitors
will be so great that “one tour guide
company asked if I could put up other
tour guides…some licensed guides who
know D.C. are coming in from other
states and offering $100 a night.”
The guild of professional tour guides will
hold a briefing for guides in preparation
for January 20.
As to tickets for the inauguration, some
seekers have asked friends from other
states to contact their congressional representative
on behalf of the Washington
area friend.
Here’s a web site that may be useful.
http://www.WMATA.com/inauguration/
It contains the latest plans, schedules, restrictions
etc., and you can sign up for
email notice of any changes.
If this sounds like chaos, there’s more. As
of this writing, our tour guides have no
idea when or where they will meet their
busload of kids.
According to the Washington Board of
Trade President, Jim Dinegar, as many
as 10,000 buses will be descending on
D.C., and where to park them is, “going
to be a logistical nightmare.”
LBA committees: staying cohesive while
taking care of business By Kimberly Smith Barcroft News Staff
this is the last in the series of articles reviewing all
LBA committees, highlighting the responsibilities of and volunteer
opportunities within each. The purpose of this article
is look at the larger picture and highlight where we still need
your help.
COMMIttee reSPOnSIBILItIeS
The overarching goal of the LBA committees is to fulfill the
purpose of our association, namely:
■ To exercise ownership, management and control over Lake
Barcroft, the beaches and other properties belonging to the
Lake and our association;
■ To respect, preserve and enhance the unique natural resources
under our association’s management; and
■ To promote, foster and protect our community and to promote
its cooperative activities and friendly spirit.
In short, the LBA commitees are responsible for taking care
of the business of the LBA, our environmental assets and the
events that show off our community spirit. For more than 50
years, the committees have done a great job.The Lake continues
to be healthy and our community spirit is vibrant.
CHaLLenGeS anD VOLunteer OPPOrtunItIeS
Each committee has its own challenges, but the common thread
has been the issue of sustained volunteer involvement. As LBA
President, Cindy Waters has said, the volunteers and their time
commitment are what give our community the cohesion that
we all enjoy. In fact, Cindy so well stated the importance of
volunteers that, for this inaugural 2009 newsletter edition, I am
reprinting her words:
“So many aspects of our lives in this neighborhood are touched
by the efforts of the many volunteers we have living among us.
Just by reading this newsletter, you are gaining the benefits of the
many hours of work provided by a dedicated and hard-working
group of volunteers – editors, photographers, production/layout
and reporters all volunteer their time to put together this
monthly issue.”
As she also noted, “The LBA board of directors is composed
of volunteers. Many of the social activities held throughout
the year are sponsored by the Woman’s Club, the Newcomers’
Club, Barcrofters and/or the LBA. Every one of these gatherings
is organized and staffed by volunteers. In fact, many community
volunteers have performed the same service not just for
years, but decades. Some efforts occur once a year and others are
year-round. And, as evidenced by the 2008 Beach Clean-Up,
volunteers ranged from age 8 to 80 – and all made important
contributions.”
Cindy further noted about volunteers, “occasionally we find
that an activity will require more volunteers. Last spring, for
example, a call went out on Lakelink for people to participate in
the Geese Peace program, a successful undertaking since its inception.
There have also been calls for volunteers for the Fourth
of July fireworks display, one of the premiere events in the community,
as well as for assistance in the maintenance of the beautiful
RPA garden at Beach 5. These and other activities would
not exist without the volunteers who staff them. As always, if
you are interested in being a volunteer participant for any event,
feel free to contact a board member.”
There are five committees in particular that need your help:
■ Improvements: The community prides itself on our appearance.
These volunteer positions are crucial to the well-being
of the community;
■ Publications: Enjoy this newsletter? Got ideas for making it
better? Get involved!
■ Security: Not just neighborhood patrols; think safety, our
kids and our older neighbors. Help make us all safer!
■ Special Events: It’s never too early to start planning the
fireworks!
■ Water Safety and Beaches: Beach Clean-up: First Sunday
in May. Be there!
As we begin another year, please make a New Year’s resolution
to volunteer for one of the LBA committees.
Sally’s son, Dann, and his family are temporarily living with
her, renting out their Pinetree Terrace home while daughter-inlaw
Ada takes time out from her career to focus on their young
children and additional graduate work. Dann is an attorney
with the EEOC. Second son, David, lives with his family in
Spotsylvania.
Sally is a recent widow and also recently retired and is looking
forward to becoming more involved in Lake Barcroft activities.
“Except for my family and other loved ones, there is nothing
that enhances my blessed life more than living in Lake Barcroft.
And it’s time once again to do what I can to give back.”
Stuart FeLDtSeIn is
seeking his third two-year
term on the Board. He is a
past president of LBA and is
presently the vice-president
and chair of the Board’s legal
committee. He says he
is constantly getting into
trouble trying to keep LBA
out of trouble. Seriously,
he has enjoyed serving the
community and looks forward to continuing to do so. This is
a wonderful community and it is made more so by the efforts
of many volunteers.
Stuart and his wife Ellen have lived in the same Dockser Terrace
house since 1972, having moved in just six weeks before the
Lake disappeared. Undeterred, they stayed here to raise their
two children. Now they look forward to visits from their children,
grandchildren and grand dog.
In his pre-retirement life Stuart was an attorney practicing communications
law, first as a government attorney with the FCC,
then as the general counsel for a trade association, and finally as
a partner in a D.C. law firm. He still visits his firm’s office to do
the odd task.
The Lake is not Stuart’s only volunteer activity. Of particular
relevance to the Lake community, he is active at the Woodrow
Wilson branch library.
What another Finley?!
When the call for candidates went out, I responded. Not as
much to be on the board, but with the willingness to step forward
to help fill out the ballot. I feel a duty to the community
I have known and considered home all of my life and would be
honored if it elects me.
As for my position on issues, I’m strictly middle of the road (I
am well acquainted with the double yellow line and dead armadillos).
I remain open to all ideas, including the impractical for
they might contain a seed of brilliance. I have no agenda, Lake
Barcroft’s well being is my goal. I believe the community is currently
in good hands. To be sure there are always improvements
to be made and lots of work to be done.
Relevant experience: I have served as treasurer of the Ravenwood
Citizens Association and on the Board of Trustees of the Sleepy
Hollow United Methodist Church. I have worked on directories,
mostly in the Motion Picture reference room. I also spent over
18 years at NBC News where I performed informational research
and a cacophony of other tasks. Currently I research what
is loosely termed “business methods” at the Patent Office. And
with my two boys as evidence, I am a competent father.
Additionally, I see things objectively, recognizing other’s point
of view and have a well developed “malarkey meter,” I can spot a
scam. I will say what I think, keep my mouth shut when necessary,
or most likely diffuse with humor.
This is a unique community. Elsewhere houses are frequently
thought of as a commodity, here we are fortunate to have so
much more.
JOeL GreGOrIO and
his partner, Joe Pelican,
moved to Lake Barcroft in
2003 after learning about
this wonderful neighborhood
through friends living
in the community. Shortly
after relocating here, Joel
got to know a number of
people in the community
who share his interest in
gardening by hosting a gardening class on hydrangea propagation.
Since that time, Joel volunteered at a number of Lake Barcroft
community gardening events. When not working in his
the Lake with his dogs and spending quiet winter days reading
while overlooking the Lake.
After completing a 13-year career as an Air Force officer, Joel
has worked in the DC high-tech information technology industry
for the past 20 years for such notable companies as Booz
Allen, Boeing and SAIC, specializing in government technology
support contracts.
Joel serves as membership chair and is the Lake Barcroft Newsletter
photo editor and for the past two years he has also managed
the newsletter photo contest that he established to encourage
his neighbors to search out and document the wonderful
sites and events around our community. Joel also serves on the
Architectural Review Committee where he works towards preservation
of the beauty of the Lake and our unique community
while allowing for modernization of homes.
our neighborhood and its many fine houses, many of which
are recently renovated or replacement homes, while other gems
are original well-designed mid-century modern homes. Greg
would like to see more focus put on the Architectural Review
Committee to enable it to function better, including a survey
of residents as to their ideas for improving the process. Those
who have recently participated in the process can provide valuable
feedback on changes that would make the ARC more user
friendly.
Greg devotes himself to significant volunteer work in the community,
such as with the JEB Stuart Crew Team and the Virginia
Science Museum, where he serves on a board charged with
preserving a significant mid-century modern home by architect
Richard Neutra. He is a member of both the LB Newcomers
and Men’s Book Clubs. His interests include college football,
rowing, architectural history and landscaping his own home on
Beachway Drive near Beach 5. A native of Ohio, he is a graduate
walking in the mornings around the neighborhood, swimming,
pontooning and kayaking around the Lake. Eva is interested in
giving back to Lake Barcroft by preserving the natural beauty
of the Lake and enhancing the unique neighborly, community
croft Woman’s Club, leading and teaching the Craft Group each
and was privileged to serve as their Treasurer for the last two
years. Warren understands service. He was a career military officer,
serving worldwide in the Army for 30 years, and where he
commanded intelligence units at the company, battalion and
brigade level. Upon retirement from the military, he went to
work as the Vice President for Defense Activities at HSA, Inc.,
a small defense contractor. He spends most of his time as a
Senior Policy Consultant for the Under Secretary of Defense,
Intelligence at the Pentagon. With leadership assignments in
diverse locations throughout the United States and Europe, he’s
gained first-hand experience in resolving community issues and
vows to review any and all issues facing our community with a
fresh perspective, take a reasonable, common sense approach to
problem solving and be open to new ideas that represent today’s
environment. Warren appreciates the value of active volunteers,
open communication and is willing to promote these values to
keep Lake Barcroft a great neighborhood.
CInDy WaterS (photo not available) and her husband,
George, and their daughter Caitlin (now 16) moved to Lake
Barcroft in 1996. She is completing her first two-year term on
the LBA Board, the first year as Secretary and most recently as
President. Her husband, George, served on the LBA Board for
six years including two as President. They sometimes jokingly
wonder whether it is community service or masochism that runs
through the family psyche.
Cindy retired from the federal government in 2003 after almost
30 years of service, most of it spent on Capitol Hill in the office
of then-Senator Bill Cohen. Her last four years of federal service
were spent as a management analyst for two different Commissions
within the Department of Defense. Since her retirement,
she has spent a great deal of time in volunteer activities including
serving for two years as Co-President of the Lake Barcroft
Woman’s Club then continuing as Program Chair. With a B.S.
degree in child development and family relations from Cornell
University, she has continued her interest in education issues by
currently serving as President of the J.E.B. Stuart High School
PTSA as well as Vice Chair on the FCPS Advanced Academic
Programs Advisory Committee.
In Cindy’s opinion, the greatest mistake any of us could make
would be to take Lake Barcroft, and the very real neighborhood
spirit that is so evident here, for granted. She feels that
the Board is an important component of this community and
wants to continue the policy of LBA having a close working relationship
with WID. As a Board member, she would continue
to work hard to keep Lake Barcroft the amazing place it is.
Newcomers Club Holiday Party
On Saturday, December 13, the Newcomers
Club hosted its final social gathering
of 2008 – the annual holiday party.
This year we came together in the spacious
ballroom of the Arlington Moose
Lodge. The almost 100 guests who attended
were greeted by the warm spirit
of their neighbors, a beautifully decorated
tree on a stage, plenty of made fromscratch
egg-nog and gourmet dishes.
After Reid Voss, Moose Lodge Governor
welcomed us to the lodge, Miranda
Thomas thanked the Newcomers Board
and the Lake Barcroft community for
its support over the past two years of
her presidency. Then the Newcomers
Board election confirmed Trish Gomersall
of Farm Hill Drive as the incoming
2009–2010 Newcomers Club President
with an overwhelming vote. Also elected
or continuing in their positions are Kim
Mills as Vice President, Warren Russell as
Treasurer, Wendy Diliberti as Hospitality
Chair, Heather Thomas as Membership
Chair, and Paul and Winifred Mulligan
Since the business was taken care of, next
it was time for the infamous White Elephant
gift-exchange, where the name
of the game is to draw or steal the best
gift of the lot. Santa, Joe Pisciotta, and
his trusted Elf, Matt Friedman, were
task masters and hilarious as they helped
the guests find their prize! It’s hard to
say what the most sought after gift of
the night was, but there were plenty of
laughs with those who were so bold to
put a beautifully jeweled tea cozy from
Pakistan on their heads as a hat and more
than a few gasps at the sight of a candied
undergarment.
As the night wore on, everyone took advantage
of the opportunity to reconnect
with longstanding neighbors and meet a
few true newcomers to the community.
Even better, if you had your eyes peeled,
you were likely to spot one of our original
Lake Barcrofters, Theresa St. Hilaire
FOR YOUR REAL ESTATE NEEDS, RELY ON
filling up her dance card with a couple of
worthy gentlemen. Others were lucky, or
perhaps unlucky, to notice Santa’s unique
fur-lined shorts!
Many thanks to the event organizers, Colleen
Coyle and Chris Lyons and the generous
residents who assisted them in ending
the Newcomers Club year in style.
The Power of Two
Our families have lived in Lake Barcroft
for many years. It is a unique community,
close to city life, that is a quiet oasis and an
idyllic retreat. Communty spirit is high and
lake living is life at its finest.
“Four” is the number for this month
By George McLennan and Debra M. Lee Barcroft News Staff
an old favorite, Four Sisters, has
moved from Eden Center to Strawberry
Lane next to the Lee Highway Multiplex
Cinema theater complex) in Merrifield.
The move seemed like a good excuse for
us to make another visit. Our first discovery
was that the restaurant seems to have
retained its popularity as we found it to
be nearly full at 8 p.m. on a Tuesday.
The new location is a new building with
new furnishings and it is attractively decorated.
However, it also has a lot of hard
surfaces making it noisy enough that we
had to lean in a bit to hear our dining
companions.
On the plus side, the staff was warm,
friendly and guided us through unfamiliar
dishes when taking our order. Our
waitress also made sure we knew which
sauces (served on the side) went with
which dishes.
The quality of the food lived up to our
expectations and the restaurant’s reputation.
We ordered Bun Thit Noung
(grilled pork on rice vermicelli served
in a bowl with fresh sprouts), Canh Do
Bien (seafood combination soup with
shrimp, squid and mixed vegetables),
Bo Nuong Tieu Den (grilled black pepper
beef served over a of fresh watercress,
tomatoes and onions with lime dip), and
Scallop Rang Muoi (baked salted and
spiced scallops served over a bed of fresh
watercress, tomatoes and onions with
lime dip). When we finished our meal,
we were in unanimous agreement that
our dishes were great or better.
The bottom line for four of us - the bill
came to about $60, plus tip (not including
all those Tsingtaos before, during
and after dinner). We did not go often
restaurants continued from page 19
enough before the move to be intimately acquainted with the
old menu, but we are told that the menu selections are the same
with a price increase of about 10 to 15 percent.
The Four Sisters will continue to be one of our favorite lunch
and dinner stops.
Ireland’s Four Provinces has been on our list for a
long time as a lunch stop. We went there for the first time for
dinner for this review. It is a somewhat typical Washington, D.C.
area Irish pub. Traditional Irish fare, traditional Irish live music
and a friendly accommodating bar. For us it makes a nice change
of pace from many of restaurants that we usually frequent.
The menu consists of Dinner Salads, entrees (all items had Irishsounding
names), Traditional Irish Fare (we think these are the
real goods) and Sandwiches. There seems to be something for
everyone. We tried the flank steak salad and several of the traditional
Irish dishes: lamb stew, shepherds pie, corned beef and
cabbage, cottage pie and fish and chips. All were quite good,
but a particular treat is the Smithwick’s Irish red ale on tap.
(Smithwick’s is pronounced 'Smithicks', 'Smitticks', 'Smidicks'
or 'Smeth-icks' depending on your Irish accent and dialect.)
The wait staff was personable, friendly and attentive and the
owner (or manager) came by at least once to be sure our dining
needs were being met. The bars in Irish pubs (and all pubs
for that matter) can be a bit noisy, but the floor plan in Four
Provinces is such that at least part of the dining area is shielded
from the commotion.
The bottom line, without all those Smithwick’s and the tip, the
tab came to just under $15 a head. That seems like a very good
value considering the good food and good service. We like the 4Ps
and will continue to stop in occasionally for lunch and dinner.
