the company of entertaining neighbors? Join the Newcomers, Sunday
June 27 at 7:30 p.m. for a dinner out! LB resident Eunhee Roth (a
Summer is upon us, and in Lake Barcroft one of the most anticipated
native Korean) has picked a delicious menu just for Newcomers and
events is the July 4th Fireworks display.
will tell us about Korean cuisine. Join Eunhee, her husband, Bud,
and Newcomer friends will dine in one of Han Sung Oak’s private
rooms on Chap Chae, Pa Jun, Goon Man Doo and Gal Bi.
A unique feature of the Lake Barcroft July 4th fireworks display is
that it is members of our community who volunteer to plan and
execute this event. We have lots of tasks and can utilize the time and
skills of anyone that wishes to participate.
In preparation, a planning meeting will be held this Wednesday to
recruit volunteers for fireworks crews. If you are handy with hand
tools and/or garden tools, we can use your skills. For the more
adventurous individuals, we also need your help that evening to do
the 'behind the scenes' tasks that make this show happen.
And ladies, if you think this is just some guy thing; reconsider. Our
past and present volunteers include quite a few of our female lake
residents. They have been on both the preparation crews and on the
show crews, so don't be afraid to lend your efforts.
Dinner price is $25 per person (including tax and gratuity). Cash bar.
Reserve your spot now, space is limited!! R.S.V.P. to Christy Herz
(see above), and send your checks to her in advance to 6538 Jay
Miller Dr., Falls Church, VA 22041. We will have a list at the door.
Event Wrap Up
Sand Day
Sand Day is a great Lake Barcroft event which was created by young
people for young people, and it is run by young people. A couple of
years ago, the Newcomers Club began to support this youth activity
by holding a weenie roast so that there would be food and drink
available for those who came to the event.
This year brought a warm, sunny day, and everyone had a wonderful
time. The Newcomers served up more than 100 hot dogs, bratwurst,
and veggie dogs, along with chips, soda, juice, water and cookies.
As can be seen in these pictures by Bill Wasylyk, Sand Day was a
great day.
Joe Franco Wins the
Chili Cookoff
More than 60 people gathered to sample 15 chili entries at the
Newcomers Club annual Chili Cookoff. A rainy, wintry
afternoon was definitely warmed by the hospitality of Corri
Goldman and Mike Spivey -- not to mention the heat of the
various chilis set off against a host of cornbread recipes.
Joe Franco, of Beachway Dr., took the top honors and
received a trophy recognizing his as The Best Chili. Also
receiving awards were Pete Sackleh for the hottest chili, Seth
Davidson for the sweetest chili, Brenda Poole for the best nontraditional
chili, and Jerry Ellig for the most complex chili.
