About the Cover and Inside Cover: Twelve players return from a first-year program that came innings away from

When 7 players donned the black and gold for the first time last season, nobody dreamed the first-year College of Southern Idaho 

softball program would be fighting for a Region 8 Championship in May, taking a 5-0 lead into the top of the 4th inning of the championship. 

Twelve of those players that fought through four elimination games to reach that championship are back. Now they want to prove the 

top is where they belong. This time they want to be on the winning end of the Region 8 Championship. 

To do that, CSI head coach Nick Baumert will rely on the Golden Eagles experience and depth. Ranked ninth nationally in the NJ- 

CAA pre-season poll, CSI will begin the 2008 season with a bullseye on its back. 

“We want to build upon the success of last year but not dwell on it,” Baumert said. “This team has a chance to do something special.” 

A big key will be in the pitcher’s circle. All four Golden Eagle pitchers are back, led by Region 8 first team honoree Jody Zillner. 

After starting the season 8-8, Zillner finish strong going 6-2, ranking third in the league in ERA. 

She is backed up by five talented pitchers. Returners Desi Thomson, Stephanie Holmes and Lacey Bowman all proved they could get 

it done last year. Freshmen McKensy Hillstead and Kyla Bryant bring depth and talent to the circle. 

At the catcher position, returners Anna Sorrell and Lauren Kurtenbach are joined by freshman Megan Zimmerman. 

First team all-region selection Rachel Evans 

anchors the infield. She is joined by returners 

Candice Benard, Katelynn Warren, Jamie Stone 

and Sarah Haney. Newcomers Rocky Kroll and 

Melanie Meyer give Baumert a lot of choices. 

In the outfield, sophomore Rochelle Noren returns 

as the best CSI hitter. A first team all region 

selection, Noren ranked third in the league in batting 

average. Freshmen Dani Grant and Cassi Merrill 

also will play outfield for the Golden Eagles. 

Holmes and Bowman can move to the outfield 

when they aren’t pitching. 

“We are lucky to have so many kids that can play 

so many different positions,” Baumert said. “Each 

player will be pushed every day. If someone is 

having a bad day, there will be a player there to 

step in and contribute.” 

With 9 players, it will be a fight for playing time 

but Baumert hopes that will push everyone to rise 

to a higher level and learn to play hard every day. 

“We talk every day about taking advantage of 

opportunities and that essentially the players write 

the lineup,” Baumert said. “I’m excited to see how 

far this talented team can go.” 

To win the league, the Golden Eagles will need 

to get by No. 2 Salt Lake, the defending NJCAA 

National runner-up North Idaho, Snow College, 

College of Southern Nevada and Colorado Northwestern. 

“That’s the great thing about this league,” Baumert 

said. “On any given day, anyone can win. We 

will need to win at home and steal some wins on 

the road.” 

Playing on a newly built field, CSI will open 

league action at home Feb. 22 against North Idaho.

Nick Baumert begins his second season as the College of 

Southern Idaho women’s head softball coach. In just one year, 

he built a brand new program, led it to a second-place finish at 

the Region 8 Tournament and earned Region 8 Coach of the 

Year honors. 

Baumert said he is honored that he was the one selected to 

start a new program at the college. 

“I consider CSI the best junior college in America,” Baumert 

said. “This is a dream job for me. To be a part of the CSI family 

is really special.” 

Baumert, who was the Twin Falls High School varsity coach 

for seven seasons, led the Bruins to a 59-46 record during that 

time. He won the Region III title five times and placed fifth three 

times at the state tournament. 

Throughout his high school coaching career, he coached one 

high school All-American, six Region III Players of the Year 

and 29 Region III first team selections. He also helped 2 players 

continue their softball career at the college level. 

Baumert received coach of the year accolades five times for Region III, twice for the Times-News and seven 

times from the District IV coaches. Most recently, Baumert was named Distinguished Softball Coach of the 

Year for Idaho in 2006. 

Baumert, 40, is married to Karen. They have two daughters, Katelynn and Kylie.

Courtney Dale begins her second season as the College of 

Southern Idaho volunteer pitching coach. Courtney, a former All- 

American at UCLA, led the Bruins to a national championship 

in 999. The Pac 0 Pitcher of the Year pitched in the national 

championship game and hit the game-winning home run. Courtney 

was a part of the two national runner-up finishes at the national 

tournament her junior and senior year as well. In 2000, Courtney 

was the first pick overall in the USA Women’s Professional Fastpitch 

Softball League. After her playing career at UCLA, Courtney 

was a member of the gold medal team in the Pam Am Qualifier in 

Maracy, Venezuela. She then competed on the US national team. 

From 2002-2005, Courtney played professionally in Japan. She 

was named league MVP in 2002 and led her team to the Japanese 

League Championship. Courtney and her husband David live in 

Fresno with their daugther Lauren. They are expecting their second 

child in May.

Nicole joins the Golden Eagles for her first season as assistant 

coach. A 200 graduate from Burley High School, Nicole was 

team captain in volleyball and softball leading the Bobcats to back 

to back state softball appearances in 2000 and 200 . Her senior 

season she earned all-state and all-Great Basin Conference honors. 

She also was named A- Division II Times-News Player of the 

Year. 

From Burley, she went on to play volleyball and softball at 

Albertson College (now College of Idaho). She was a defensive 

specialist on the volleyball court and split time between 2nd and 

3rd base in softball. Nicole is listed in the career record books 

for games played and hit by pitch. She graduated in 2005 with 

a degree in politics and economics and a minor in coaching. 

In addition to her coaching duties at CSI, she is an assistant 

volleyball coach at Twin Falls High School and a Realtor.

Her provincial softball team - the Surrey 

Storm -won the gold medal in the junior 

Canadian Nationals in 2003 and the B.C.

year with an -9 record and a 2.77 ERA. 

Before CSI: A four-time varsity 

player at Copper Hills High School, Desi 

led her team to a fifth-place finish at state 

in 2005 and a third-place region finish in 

2006. 

Thomson earned first team Region 

2 honors and Salt Lake Tribune second 

team all-state honors as a sophomore and 

junior. As a senior, Desi was named to the

Eagles No. pitcher by the end of her 

freshman season. She was named st 

team all region, posting a 2.29 ERA, 

good enough to be ranked third in the

at Emmett High School, Jody led her 

softball team to a third place finish as a

During her 2005-06 school year, 

Jody earned all conference second-team

Gerald L. Beck began his career at the College of Southern Idaho in 975 and 

became president of the college in 2005. His many titles at the college include 

Instructor, Coordinator of Trade and Industry Programs, Dean of Continuing 

Education/Summer School, Vice President of Instruction, and Executive Vice 

President/Chief Academic Officer. 

Dr. Beck is an Idaho native. He received his bachelor’s degree in Technical 

Education, his master’s degree in Teacher Education, and his Ed. D. in Adult 

Education from the University of Idaho. He completed his post doctoral at 

Harvard University Institute for Educational Management. 

In addition to his duties at the college, Dr. Beck is a member of the Twin 

Falls Rotary Club, and is a board member of the State Workforce Development 

Council appointed by the Governor. He serves as a board member on many local 

organizations including Southern Idaho Economic Development Organization, 

Region IV Development Association and Magic Valley Regional Medical Center. 

He is past president of the Idaho Association of Private Industry Councils. 

Dr. Beck and his wife, Barbara, have three adult children and three 

grandchildren. He attributes much of his success to the opportunities provided by the college and the support from his 

family and co-workers. 

Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate is in the midst of his first year 

at the helm of Golden Eagle Athletics. 

Bate, who had been teaching in the English Department since he arrived on 

the CSI campus in 993, gave up teaching in the classroom to work with studentathletes 

and coaches on a daily basis. 

Bate coached at CSI from 993 until 2000, leading the Lady Golden Eagles 

to the national tournament in 999. During that span, Bate compiled a 44-78 

record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic All- 

Americans. Two players went on to play professional basketball, including Jessica 

Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy Rogers. In 999, Bate earned 

Region 8 Coach of the Year honors. 

Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High School 

in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English department. In addition 

to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball, track and basketball, where he 

compiled a 4-32 record and four third-place state finishes. 

Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the 

University of Idaho in 986. 

Bate and his wife Donna and three children live in Twin Falls.

Construction on the Golden 

Eagle Softball Field began 

last spring. It began as a 

corn field and progressed to 

a softball diamond. 

Stakes were set out and the field was created 

To begin, CSI crews dug up the corn field

The field was leveled and 

the fence laid out.

With the fence in, grass was planted and the 

field began to take shape.

Dugout Construction began in the summer. 

Most of the field construction was completed in 

the fall of 2007. This picture was just prior to 

the dugouts being completed.
