A look back at 2012
It has been a wonderful year at Bartels Lutheran
Retirement Community. 2012 has come and
gone and many exciting things took place. The
year was started with staff at Bartels participating
in the ‘Souper Bowl’, a fight against hunger and
poverty across the nation. Bartels staff and visitors
collected over 150 lbs. of food and raised $158
to be donated to the local food pantry. Bartels
residents, staff, family and friends also participated
in the ELCA “Buck-a-Chick” world hunger
campaign throughout the lenten season. A total of
a $365 was raised to help end world hunger.
The restorative care program, a popular therapy
program for residents, continues to expand. The
program offers long-term residents the ability to
maintain or gain strength, mobility and balance
through restorative exercise programs. The
restorative therapy program moved to its new
location in Woodland Terrace in the Fall of 2012.
Currently 52 residents are participating in the
therapy program.
A playful black Labrador retriever joined the
staff at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.
Lucy, Bartels Pet Therapy dog, moved to Bartels in
late June and began her duties of visiting residents
on a daily basis and attending Bartels events. Lucy
not only provides much-needed companionship,
but also helps increase residents’ quality of social
interaction. The residents have truly enjoyed Lucy’s
companionship over the past six months.
Bartels Leisure Services department held its
first Bartels Olympics in July. The Olympics
allowed residents from all communities to compete
in different events. Gold, silver and bronze
medals were awarded to the residents for their
accomplishments. The Olympic events included, an
Opening Ceremony, Archery, Handball, Badminton
and Closing Ceremonies.
Eichhorn Haus celebrated its 25th Anniversary
the first week of October. Week events included
an Open House to the public, special anniversary
dinner with entertainment for Eichhorn Haus
residents, Open House for all Bartels’ staff, and a
special social hour concluded the week’s events on
Friday.
A new gazebo was built and finished in October
for residents and family to enjoy quality time
outside. A special thank you to all donors who
helped fund the gazebo.
Eisenach Village continues to grow at a
rapid pace with 20 homes being occupied. The
Klubhaus, a community center for Eisenach Village
members, will be open at the end of January. The
Klubhaus features an exercise room, kitchenette,
large community room and game room. It will
also house the Eisenach Village Sales Office and
Selections Gallery.
2012 brought many wonderful things to Bartels.
We would like to thank all of the friends, family,
and donors for all of your help and encouragement
that you gave to Bartels over the past year. We wish
you and yours a wonderful, safe and healthy 2013!
Blessings and Happy New Year!

Once again the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community will be taking part in the Souper Bowl of
Caring. Residents, staff members, families, and visitors are invited to participate. At least one nonperishable
food item (still within the expiration date), or one dollar is being requested. Beginning
Wednesday, January 23 and through Tuesday, February 5, 2013, tables will be located in the hallway
between Eichhorn Haus and Linden Place, outside the Good Shepherd Chapel, and near the Fireside
Room (Skilled Rehabilitation entrance). Donated food can be left at any of those tables. Monetary
donations can be given to Pastor Al. All donated food and money will be given to the Waverly
location of the NE Iowa Food Bank to help those in need in our local community. The amount from
Bartels will be tallied with other donations from around the county to arrive at the total response to
the Souper Bowl of Caring. As the date draws closer more information will be posted. This program
began as an opportunity for youth, but now others are being included. For more information you are
invited to go to: souperbowlofcaring.org or tacklehunger.org.
May the young, and the young at heart here at Bartels work together to reflect the huge heart that
is at the very core of this community. Please consider your generous response as, together, we address
hunger in our community.
Blessings!!!
Resident Spotlight: Elda Wittenburg
If you ever want to spend
an enjoyable half-hour
or so, stop by Apt. 205
in Linden Place and visit
with 104 year old Elda
Wittenburg. Her life has
spanned so many changes in
technology, convenience and
travel that it is amazing to
think what she has seen and
experienced. Elda is very knowledgeable about the local
history of the Readlyn/Denver area; a place she called
home her whole life until moving to Bartels Assisted
Living in July of 2008.
Born June 1, 1908, on the Seeger family farm in
Maxfield Township, Bremer County, Iowa, Elda was
next to the youngest child, with four sisters and
one brother. She attended country school for a short
time before the family moved into Denver to an acreage
on Main Street where her father bred, trained and sold
purebred horses and her mother sold fruit from her
large garden. Elda married Fred Wittenburg on her 18th
birthday in 1926. Together they had two sons, Lavern
and Donald. There are five granddaughters and two
grandsons and an assortment of great grandchildren.
Elda worked alongside Fred in their various businesses
in Denver, including a tavern and then many years of
owning and operating the lumberyard. After they left
the lumberyard, they owned and operated another
tavern/restaurant called Speed’s in Denver. Elda has
been a widow for quite some time, but remains close to
her family and spends many good times with them.
When I asked her to share some of her good
memories of years gone by, Elda’s eyes lit up as she
told about a car full of friends going to the Riviera in
Janesville, the Coliseum in Oelwein or Electric Park
in Waterloo for dances. She said they would load up
Enriching lives through quality
services & Ch r i sti care. a n
the car and take off for a night of dancing the 2-Step,
Polka and Waltz to live music. Another fun activity
for the Wittenburgs and their friends was card playing,
especially games of 500 at their homes. Elda still loves
to play cards, spending every afternoon and evening
at Linden Place playing 500; a total of four hours or so
daily. Only a natural disaster or a doctor’s appointment
will change that routine!
Another important part of Elda’s life has been her
church, St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Denver,
where she has been a member for over 100 years. She
and her family rarely missed a Sunday service and she
attends church every Sunday now at Linden Place. The
Wittenburgs also enjoyed traveling by car to Portland,
Oregon, California and the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
Elda states that those trips are some of her favorite
memories.
Elda still keeps a daily journal and writes letters to
a long list of old friends and far away relatives. Her
determination and focus are part of the reason she is
so active and alert at 104, although she states she
has never known anyone as old as she is and never
thought she would live so long!
Elda enjoys living at Linden Place for the friends
she has made, the breakfast and supper meals and
all the ice cream and cookies that are served. She is
fond of saying she could see and hear a lot better 20
years ago (when she was 84!) so she is grateful for the
help she receives here. Fiercely independent, she does
almost everything for herself, asking only for a little
help with her hair between regular beauty shop visits on
Wednesdays.
So if you have a little time, come and visit this
remarkable lady, but be sure to call first…she may have a
card game, a nap scheduled or a letter or two to write!
Eichhorn Haus would like to welcome new resident,
Ray Dewey, to Eichhorn Haus and the Bartels’
community on December 7th. He moves here from
Waverly.
December was a busy month in Eichhorn Haus with
the holiday activities taking place. Residents enjoyed
a ride around Waverly looking at Christmas lights
early in the month. Holiday refreshments were enjoyed
afterwards. St. Paul’s school came for their Gifts of Joy
on December 6th. They sang
Christmas carols and handed
out gifts. Fourth graders
from Carey Elementary also
visited and helped celebrate
the holiday season. Residents
enjoyed a sing-a-long with
Alan and Patricia Hagen on
December 12th. The Eichhorn
Haus bell choir, led by Alice
Bidne, preformed a holiday
concert on December 14th.
Eichhorn Haus held its annual Christmas party on
December 19th. Andrew & Emma Withers of Waverly,
played a piano duet, and performing after dinner were
Emma Rathe, Dr. Jennifer Larson and Denise Hull. All
three floors of Eichhorn Haus had their annual open
houses to display their holiday decorating. The month
ended with a New Year’s Eve pizza party!
Bartels Residents dishing up new recipes weekly
I f you were to walk down the hallways at Bartels Lutheran
Retirement Community on a Monday afternoon around
2:00 you may smell the aroma of a fresh baked apple pie,
homemade chicken noodle soup on the stove or pizzas baking
in the oven. Those scents are coming from the kitchenette in
the Good Shepherd Chapel located on Bartels’ campus.
Every Monday at 2:00 p.m., Leisure Services Assistant,
Trisha Kaiser, hosts a baking group of residents who help
make new recipes. Kaiser started the group because of her
love for cooking and baking. She has always cooked for
family gatherings and enjoys sharing her love of cooking
with others. “I started baking when I was nine years old and
ever since then I wanted to bake and cook for others” said Kaiser. She continued, “Food warms the soul
and provides contentment and satisfaction. To watch the residents eat what they have helped create puts a
huge smile on my face. They miss those kinds of comfort foods.”
“Having this group allows the residents to be back in the kitchen like they used to be” said Kaiser.
“They enjoy telling their cooking stories from when they used to bake and cook for their families. This
group allows them to bring back those memories.”
Each week features a different recipe. Some recipes are picked at random and other times a resident
will suggest their favorite dish. Throughout the past three months, recipes featured fall, Halloween and
Christmas themes, and included Zombie Pizzas, Cranberry Apple Crunch and The Great Pumpkin Cake
and Christmas sugar cookies. In November, the residents helped fix a complete Thanksgiving dinner. The
menu included turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green bean casserole, cranberry salad and
homemade rolls.
The baking group meets from an hour to an hour and a half depending on how long the recipe takes.
Each resident is responsible for helping with a certain
part of the recipe; mixing, stirring, pouring
ingredients, spreading frosting, etc. When the
cooking or baking is finished, the residents each
enjoy their own serving. Their favorites recipes
include homemade chicken noodle soup with
home-made noodles, Tiramisu, and the Southern
Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese frosting.
Kaiser concludes, “It’s been a lot of fun to watch
the residents take part in something I know they
used to love to do.”
