It is <strong>in</strong> <strong>Chicago</strong> that French Fem<strong>in</strong>ist Simone <strong>de</strong> Beauvoir<br />

met and fell <strong>in</strong> love with the American author Nelson<br />

Algren. Art Shay, the great <strong>Chicago</strong>-based photographer<br />

and Life magaz<strong>in</strong>e reporter, was there.<br />

Art Shay will also be with us for the open<strong>in</strong>g of a special<br />

exhibition commemorat<strong>in</strong>g not only a celebrated love<br />

story but also the world of Nelson Algren, a gritty black<br />

and white City of Big Shoul<strong>de</strong>rs that is no more. Simone’s<br />

letters to Nelson were edited by Gallimard and ma<strong>de</strong><br />

public, but Nelson’s letters to Simone are not. French<br />

author Irene Fra<strong>in</strong> will be with us to talk about her new<br />

Two men f<strong>in</strong>d themselves shar<strong>in</strong>g a lifetime of<br />

experiences and observations over the course of a<br />

summer <strong>in</strong> this low-key comedy-drama. Adapted<br />

from the memoirs of artist Henri Cueco, it is the<br />

story of a Parisian artist who <strong>in</strong>herits his family’s<br />

vacation house <strong>in</strong> the countrysi<strong>de</strong> after the <strong>de</strong>ath<br />

of his mother. He hires a local gar<strong>de</strong>ner to fix up<br />

the overgrown gar<strong>de</strong>n of the house. To his great<br />

surprise, the gar<strong>de</strong>ner turns out to be an old friend<br />

from his school days. Over the next several months,<br />

the gar<strong>de</strong>ner and the pa<strong>in</strong>ter talk about their life’s<br />

stories and what they learned along the way.<br />

This French historical drama, based on a novel by<br />

Marcel Pagnol, concerns a bizarre battle royale<br />

farm<strong>in</strong>g community. City dweller Jean Cadoret<br />

assumes ownership of the spr<strong>in</strong>g when the orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

owner is acci<strong>de</strong>ntally killed by covetous farmer<br />

Cesar Soubeyran. Soubeyran and his equally<br />

disreputable nephew Ugol<strong>in</strong> pull every dirty trick<br />

<strong>in</strong> the book to force Cadoret off his land, but the<br />

novice farmer stands firm.<br />
