What is Merit Badge Midway? A Merit Badge Midway features many exciting hands-on activities for Scouts. While they have the opportunity to practice many skills related to the merit badges, they also meet and complete some of the requirements of the badge(s) onsite, while other requirements may be completed at home. By the same token, some merit badge work is begun at home and may be completed at the Merit Badge Midway. “You can learn about sports, crafts, science, trades, business, and future careers as you earn these merit badges. There are more than 100 merit badges. Any Boy Scout may earn any merit badge at any time. You don't need to have had rank advancement to be eligible.” – scouting.org Merit Badges are the second main area of the Boy Scout advancement program. Unlike ranks, there is a degree of choice in the merit badge program. A sub-group of merit badges are known as Eagle required merit badges. To earn Eagle Scout, most of these badges must be earned although some are "either/or" badges. The remainder of the badges help with earning ranks as well as Eagle Palms after the Eagle Scout award has been earned. New This Year Merit Badge sessions will be designated with an Eagle Required indicator, a STEM Program indicator, or a Venturing indicator. What is STEM? STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is part of an initiative the BSA has taken on to encourage the natural curiosity of youth members and their sense of wonder about these fields through existing programs. From archery to welding, Scouts can't help but enjoy the wide range of STEM-related activities. To support this initiative, the BSA developed the Nova Awards program so that youth members have fun and receive recognition for their efforts. What are the Nova Awards? The BSA developed the Nova Awards program to excite and expand a sense of wonder in our Scouts. By working with an adult counselor or mentor, the various modules allow them to explore the basic principles of STEM and discover how fun and fascinating STEM can be. The Supernova awards are offered for those who enjoy a super challenge. For more information about STEM and the Nova Awards program, visit www.scouting.org/stem. Discover how the Nova Awards program helps youth be "Prepared. For Life." What is Adult Training Extravaganza? The Training Extravaganza is for leaders from an entire council or district and takes place in a festive atmosphere. Sessions are taught by volunteers who share not just their knowledge but their passion about their subject.
The Training Extravaganza is a one-day "convention." Each Scoutmaster or Cubmaster should take all leaders to this extravaganza. It's a time for experienced, new, and prospective leaders to share ideas and see what the other troops and packs are doing. Often the ones who learn the most are the volunteer instructors. The way to really learn a topic is to teach it. General Information All Scouts participating in the Merit Badge Midway must be registered by the unit leader. Adult Leaders attending adult leader training must be registered on the meritbadge.info site under Black Hills Area Council Adult Training Extravaganza 2013. All other adult leaders who want to receive a lunch MUST register on the meritbadge.info site under ABA Attendance by Adult under Black Hills Area Council Adult Training Extravaganza 2013.
