Merit Badge Midway - Black Hills Area Council

Register will be available on-line at www.blackhillsareacouncil.com under the Events & Training/Council
Program Calendar. Merit badge classes will have limited space availability and will be filled on a “first
come first serve” basis. there will be no walk-in’s or class switching the day of the Midway. If you
do not have access to a computer, you may use a computer at the Council office with the approval and
assistance of the staff.
Both the “Merit Badge Sign-Off” on Friday night and the Merit Badge Midway will be held at the South
Dakota School of Mines & Technology located at 501 East St. Joseph Street, Rapid City. Registration
will take place on Friday night at 5:45pm and Saturday at 7:00am at the Classroom Building.
Scouts participating in the “Merit Badge Sign-Off” will need to pre-register for the merit badge they
want to have signed-off and bring all requirements with them including a signed merit badge card. If
visiting a place is part of the merit badge requirements, the Scout must bring a signed note from their
Scoutmaster for verification. Each session will take approximately 15-20 minutes.
We encourage everyone to bring a merit badge book for each class they will be taking. If you need to
purchase one, you will need to pre-order by February 15 th . The cost is $3.71 per book (tax included)
and payment is due at the time the order is placed. If your order is not picked up before the Midway
begins, they will be at registration on Friday night and Saturday morning.
Finally, accommodations will be provided for Scouts on Friday night at Camp Rapid located at 2823
West Main Street. Indicate if you will require overnight accommodations when registering on-line.
Check-in will be from 6:00pm to 10:00pm at Building 801. Please park on the East side of the building
on the lower level. Those spending the night will be responsivle for providing activities for their own
youth not participating in the Merit Badge Midway. this will be available for out of District or Council
limits Units only. to follow are the Camp Rapid rules:
• No food or drink allowed in the sleeping area.
• Troops will be assigned their own sleeping quarters.
• You are responsible for cleaning your own quarters prior to check-out.
• You will be responsible for cleaning your respective bathroom facilities prio to check-out.
• Respect the base. Remember that Scouts are not the only ones that will be on base.
• You will be charged for any damages.
• Lights out on Friday night will be 10:00pm.
• Camp Rapid is a “Tobacco Free Zone”.
• Alcohol is not permitted at any Boy Scout function.
• Two Deep Leadership is required at all times.
Unit leaders, remind your Scouts that they must be in full uniform and to bring the following items:
Pencil, Paper, Merit Badge Books, Merit Badge Cards (signed), Any pre-requisite work required for
Merit Badges and any extra fees not paid prior to Midway. Merit Badge cards will be provided by Unit,
if not they will be available for purchase.
