Course Outline<br />

This course will provide candidates with a broad introduction to the<br />

energy sector. The main themes are: building a portfolio of evidence<br />

to provide information on your own carbon footprint and how you<br />

could reduce it, converting energy from one form to another,<br />

practical work with solar panels and wind turbines (integrating team<br />

work into the assembly process), and investigating careers within<br />

the energy sector. The course will also encourage candidates to<br />

evaluate the impact of energy generation on the environment and to<br />

foster a good work ethic, including good timekeeping, a positive<br />

attitude and other relevant employability skills. Candidates are<br />

encouraged to take charge of their own learning and development.<br />

Attendance Pattern<br />

Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons (1.30pm to 4pm)<br />

The duration of the course is August to May<br />

Pupil Eligibility<br />

You must have:<br />

• 3 C passes at Intermediate 1 from Maths, Craft & Design,<br />

Science or I.T. based subjects<br />

Qualification Breakdown<br />

• Domestic Solar Hot Water Systems<br />

• Employability and Careers<br />

This course has some practical workshop<br />

content but is mostly classroom based.<br />

What opportunities will be available to me<br />

when I finish?<br />

You might go on to become:<br />

• An operative or craft level job in one of the many sectors in<br />

the Energy Industry – electricity, gas and water. In some<br />

sectors you have to be over 18 years of age to start work.<br />

• A Modern Apprenticeship, or Skillseeker training, in one of<br />

these sectors, leading to a Scottish <strong>Vocational</strong> Qualification<br />

(SVQ) Levels 2 or 3. You would normally train on the job, and<br />

off the job at a local college or training centre.<br />

Apprenticeships usually last for two or three years.<br />

• A Modern Apprentice, in one of these sectors, leading to a<br />

Scottish <strong>Vocational</strong> Qualification (SVQ) Levels 2 or 3. You<br />

would normally train while working, and off the job at a local<br />

college or training centre. Apprenticeships usually last for two<br />

or three years.<br />

• A one year full time student at National Certificate (NC) or<br />

National Qualification (NQ) level in a related area of study<br />

such as Electrical Installation, Electrical / Electronic or Civil<br />

Engineering at a College of Further Education.<br />
