informed After the flood A year on, the city is a long way on the road to recovery thanks to the support of the community, writes Graham Quirk The new year has started on a brighter note but as many of us begin to return to work we should remember the events of this time last year when the January 2011 floods hit Brisbane and southern Queensland. One year on from the floods I want to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of the people of this city who banded together to lend a hand to thousands of people they’d never met as well as the tireless work of Brisbane City Council officers, emergency services, utility companies and charities. We always knew Brisbane’s flood recovery was going to be a marathon not a sprint but council is nearing the end of the marathon to restore millions of dollars worth of flood damaged infrastructure. Over the past year, council has been busy restoring parks, rebuilding roads and footpaths, repairing ferry terminals, replacing pontoons and boat ramps and replanting trees as part of the city’s flood recovery efforts. We’ve also cleared more than 26 million litres of mud and silt from 453 kilometres of stormwater drains inundated in the floods. Council has also been working through recommendations from the Flood Response Review and Queensland Floods Commission of Inquiry interim report in its Flood Action Plan. We have implemented around 90 per cent of the Commission of Inquiry recommendations. It’s been a marathon event but it’s not over yet as there is still more infrastructure work to be done, including the rebuilding of some new CityCat terminals and the Riverwalk. Support for the city Council has formalised agreements with Surf Life Saving Queensland, goa billboards, and the Tzu Chi Foundation of Brisbane to further enhance its response to future natural disasters. This response shows that the great community spirit that thrived during the floods is still alive and well, almost 12 months on. After the January 2011 floods, Tzu Chi Foundation distributed 2,801 cash cards of $500 each, 1,538 medical kits and 4,855 blankets to 2,437 affected families. Surf Life Saving Queensland also provided 70 volunteers, 32 rescue boats and helped fill hundreds of sandbags during the flood. Goa approached council earlier last year offering free use of its electronic billboards for up to two hours each day throughout the duration of an emergency or disaster. Last year council signed a similar agreement with Red Cross Australia for it to staff evacuation centres set up in a disaster event and provide support to evacuees. Tennis at Tennyson It’s been fantastic to see how the people of GRAHAM QUIRK Lord Mayor of Brisbane Brisbane have thrown their support behind the Brisbane International tennis tournament at Tennyson, a venue that was underwater immediately after the 2011 event. Plans are well underway for the new 2.9- hectare public park being built on land beside the Pat Rafter Arena that council purchased after the floods. When the purchase was announced, I said it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to secure a large portion of riverfront land as a fully-equipped community park in a real win for the local community and surrounding suburbs. I have to say that it is my very firm view that a great name for that parkland would be the Ken Fletcher Park. He was one of the great tennis personalities of this city and his name is among the suggestions that are out there in the community for that site. Got a problem in your suburb that needs fixing?
