IReL Expansion to Humanities &
Social Sciences
I am delighted to announce that the IReL
(Irish Research electronic Library) initiative
has been extended to the Humanities and
Social Sciences (HSS).
The IUA (formerly CHIU) Librarians' Group
submitted a proposal to the HEA early last
year and the Authority has now responded
positively by undertaking to fund (to an
approximate value of €15 million) acquisition
of electronic versions of a core group of HSS
John FitzGerald titles from 2006 to 2009. These titles were
proposed by academic and research staff in each of the seven
universities with the most popular titles making the final list.
The titles will be obtained progressively, some from 2006, and some
from 2007. It is hoped that the first titles will be available very
soon. A short article elsewhere in this issue provides further
information about IReL, including details of this new and very
welcome extension of the service.
This initiative is especially important for UCC, as a strong
performer in the humanities and social sciences nationally and
internationally. Increases in journal subscription costs in recent
years have weakened journal collections in some key disciplines
both here at UCC and in other universities. This scheme will serve
to make up for lost ground and will equip academic and research
staff at UCC with the essential information they need to stay
abreast of current research and to support their own research and
teaching initiatives.
It will serve to attract and maintain top-flight research staff. And at
national level, it recognises the importance of university research in
these areas as a key element in our cultural, social and economic
development.
Accessing e-journals
just got better!
There are now 18,000 unique full text e-journals available to
registered students and staff of UCC. The Library is pleased to
announce a new one stop portal for all e-journals and other
electronic resources. There is a link from the Library Homepage
under “E-Journals” or you can go directly to
http://ze5mw2yz8y.search.serialssolutions.com/.
You can search individual titles, browse an A-Z list or link directly
to databases and packages. There is a subject list which goes
UCC Open Day
From left Richard Bradfield, Rose of Tralee, Cathal Kerrigan, Una Ni
Chonghaile, Catherine Clehane.
In late March UCC held its second Open Day for
schools when the University opened its campus and
facilities to transition, fifth and sixth year pupils, their
guidance counsellors , teachers and parents. It allowed
the students see for themselves what University life is
about and gave them the opportunity to ask questions
about courses and facilities at UCC. It also allowed
the opportunity for the Library to showcase its Library
research resources and services. Library staff on duty
at the stand reported a busy day with many enquiries
about the new research Library which of course will
be up and running by the time many of these students
will be attending UCC.The 2006 Rose of Tralee paid a
welcome visit to the Library stand.
from general to very specific categories with the number of
journals for each individual subject.
Remote access is enabled for all journals. The list includes titles
from the IReL funded databases as well as subscription titles. All
titles show which issues dates are electronically available. In the
future we expect to show the print holdings from the Library
Catalogue as well.
If you have any questions about the new portal or about access
to e-resources please contact Anita Wilcox, Electronic Resources
Exhibition space
There is an exhibition case on Q+3 for material to mark
anniversaries in the arts and link them to library resources.
.
The current display marks the publication in November last of.
Patricia Lynch, Storyteller by Phil Young. Along with this first
book on the Cork writer who died in 1972, the display
includes several of her many beautifully illustrated children's
books, known and very much loved by anyone who read them
as a child. Patricia Lynch was born in Cork in 1898. She worked
in London in the 1920s and was a supporter of the suffragette
movement and friend of Sylvia Pankhurst, for whom she wrote
an eyewitness account of the 1916 Easter Rising. She had many
friends among the artists and writers of her day in Ireland also.
Book Acquisitions
The past twelve months has seen an
unprecedented growth in the number
of book proposals received in the
library.
The number of books added in
2004/5 was 11,422, a 36% increase
on the previous year. Even though
there has been an increase of nearly
20% in the number of books
purchased over the last 3 years, a
backlog of about 5,000 proposals has
developed for a number of reasons
including:
• External funding has doubled the book acquisition budget
and the number of funds to be administered
• The late receipt of the budget in March 2005 plus the
introduction of a clawback procedure (cumulated unspent
departmental funds would be transferred to library general
funds) resulted in an avalanche of book proposals from
departments
The Library is giving urgent priority to developing a project to
clear this backlog and streamline the overall processes from the
proposal stage through to the delivery of books to the shelf.
We will be providing you with ongoing reports of progress of
this project.
However, in the meantime, the cooperation of academic
departments is needed; and in the interests of service to staff
and students alike, we are asking all academic departments to:
• identify, in the remarks section of the proposal form, books
that are priority reading list requirement
• spread the submission of book proposals as far as possible
more evenly across the year
• ensure that all matters relating to book orders, and actual
or potential funding are channeled through each academic
department's Library liaison representative (cf Guidelines
for Library Departmental Representatives
Former Librarians of UCC :
From the Library of QCC to the
opening of the Boole.
Henry Hennessey, First Librarian of UCC.
In connection with the opening of the extension to the Boole
Library in 2007 we are gathering information on former
librarians with a view to creating a small gallery display should
sufficient pictorial resources for this exist. Max McCarthy is
compiling information on former Librarians . Max has the
following information so far and would be interested in hearing
from anyone who has any further information. Max told UCC
Library News that
“ Henry Hennessey was our first librarian ( c1849-1855) who
later became Professor of Physics at UCD.We have his
handwritten catalogues for the Library's collections. His brother
was the famous Cork politician John the Pope Hennessey. He
was followed by Matthias O'Keeffe who later became Professor of
Material Medica at Queen's College Cork (now UCC). His was
also a surgeon at the Mercy Hospital and several other hospitals
in the city. His practice was located on St. Patrick Hill. He held
both M.A. and M.D. degrees and was one of the early QCC
graduates. O'Keeffe was followed by the antiquarian scholar Dr.
Richard Caulfield of whom much has been written.
After Caulfield come two modern language professors ( Owen
O'Ryan and W.F.T. Butler who was also a notable Irish historian).
We have information about Butler but very little concerning
O'Ryan. Can anyone help? Butler was succeeded by a John
Fawcett M.A. as QCC [UCC from 1908] librarian. Near the end
of Fawcett's career (mid 1920s) the then Registrar Professor
Alfred O'Rahilly took charge of the Library and began a major
revision of stock and services leaving a legacy which lasted to the
early 1970s.Two other Librarians during this time were Mr.
Conroy and Mr. O'Keefe. We are seeking further information -
particularly images, in regards to them. From then on the Boole
Library and Mr. Patrick Quigg's influence on the Library is of
great importance to our understanding of the Library and services
we have today”
More electronic journals!
Humanities and Social Sciences
Researchers at UCC will benefit from the recent decision of
the Higher Education Authority (HEA) to provide additional
funding for the expansion of access to electronic journals in the
Humanities, Social Sciences and Law (HSSL).
This development is part of the Irish Research e-Library (IReL)
established by the seven Irish University Libraries in 2005 with
funding from the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and the
HEA. IReL has already been resourced with €20M to provide
access to 4,000 new titles in the sciences from 2005 to 2008.
Most of these titles are now live. In the latest development, an
additional estimated €16M has been proposed in funding by
the HEA to support HSSL journals from 2006 to 2009.
Researchers in these areas will recall having submitted wish lists
of titles during 2005 at the request of the Library. While not all
of the titles requested will be acquired, due to limited funding, it
is anticipated that amongst the packages accessible in the
coming months will be:
The exams paper database
– we can’t do it without you!
Each year after the exams are over, the Library puts out a call
to all Departments to please forward copies of Exam Papers to
the Library so that they can be included in the Exam Paper
online database. This service is extremely popular with
students - second in hits only to our homepage! Since each
department organizes their exam papers in different ways, we
depend on the individual departments to follow through with
their submissions. We want to thank all of those who took the
time in the past to submit papers and to encourage all
departments to check the Exam Paper Database to make sure
their papers are there. There is a link on the Exam Papers page
to “Guidelines for Submission of Exam Papers” which gives
information on format. Thank you again for helping us with this
valuable service. If you have questions or papers, please
