Working Together
In July 2011, the Michelin Career Center
and the Cooperative Education Program were
brought under a single roof to make counseling,
advising and interviewing more convenient for
students and employers. In March 2012, the
University Professional Internship & Co-op (UPIC)
program was created to develop exceptional oncampus
assignments for students, with the goal of
having over 150 internships by 2014, and over
350 by 2016. This trio of offices who now lived
together needed a name that encompassed all the
programs and services offered collectively by the
group, and so was born the Center for Career &
Professional Development (CCPD).
So far the returns on this merger have
been uniformly positive. Students say that having
everyone together makes life a little simpler, and
employers say that having career-related activities
in the same place reduces confusion and allows
for greater flexibility. While such convenience is
nice, ultimately we’re hoping the CCPD will
enhance opportunities for Clemson students so
that our graduates will continue to find jobs at
twice the national average, as was the case the last
two years.
We’ve set some lofty goals for what we
want to deliver to our students because excellence
isn’t obtained in the pursuit of the ordinary, but
while we’ll work hard to achieve these goals, know
that our primary concern will be providing
exceptional service to our students; everything else
is just icing on the cake.
“I am not a teacher, but an awakener.” – Robert Frost
(Caren’s favorite quote)
ABOUT
Caren currently serves as the Associate Director of the
University Internship Program. Caren is constantly
looking for ways to collaborate with employers, faculty,
and staff to provide students with the best career
enrichment experiences. With 13 years of experience in
program development and 4 years at Clemson
University, Caren strives to be a change agent and
transformational leader in the field of higher education.
Why do you think it is important for
students to complete internships or coop
experiences?
“Internship and Co-op experiences allow
students to get an inside glimpse of a
particular occupation. These experiential
education opportunities simply nurture
budding professionals.”
Dr. Caren Kelley-Hall
Associate Director
University Professional Internship Program
Career she wanted as a child:
“I wanted to be an actress. The Hollywood
glamour was very alluring!”
Favorite thing to do on a Saturday: “Travel”
ADVICE
Fall 2012
“Study abroad, obtain
many internships, and
keep your foreign
language skills in the
forefront.”
Most rewarding part of her job:
“I feel a sense of accomplishment
after I have provided students with
the tools they need to successfully
land an internship and career of
their choice. I keep every email and
thank you card from students who
have transitioned into graduate
school, new job, and internship.
These are constant reminders of
my direct impact on Clemson
University students.”
ABOUT
Marielle is from Oeffelt, in the Netherlands.
When she graduated from high school, with
a focus on society & culture, she conducted
a year of volunteer work on an international
team. Through her volunteer work Marielle
initiated and participated in projects in the
local neighborhood and abroad, including
an inter-religious service project in Ghana.
Marielle came to Clemson in 2009 to major
in Communication Studies and minor in
French. She completed an internship with
the Empower Clemson Office this past
summer, and is currently completing an On-
Campus Internship with the Clemson
Public Affairs Office. Marielle graduates
December 2012, after having made
meaningful contributions to the campus
community. She hopes to find a job related
to Communication Studies or pursue a
Master’s degree in order to become a
teacher.
Dream Career as a Child:
Interior Designer
INTERNSHIP SUMMARY
“My main responsibility as a
Leadership Circle Intern for
the EMpower office was to
help develop the off-campus
orientation guide for upper
class students who are
leaving on-campus housing
to live independently.
EMpower envisions the
guide to support students during this transition by
providing information and advice concentrated on the four
components of alcohol, safety, finances, and a roommate
agreement. As such, my work included concept
development, writing, editing and graphic design.”
ONE WORD SUMMARY
“Thought-provoking”
ADVICE
“(College is) over before you know it! So
broaden your college experience as much as
you can and focus on enjoying the positive,
from a thought-provoking discussion in class
to a beautiful view of campus.”
MOST HELPFUL PART OF INTERNSHIP
“My supervisor and director of EMpower
Kathy Cauthen. She embodies sincere and
profound care for students. Kathy really
understands people, relationships and
emotions, and as such is not only a great
leader to an organization that focuses on
student well-being, but also a wonderful guide
to the interns she works with. “
“How wonderful that no one needs wait a single moment to improve the world.” -
