Liga Medicorum Homoeopathica
Internationalis (LMHI), an
International Homoeopathic Medical
League also known as LIGA, was
organized in India after 16years.
Venue being at Siri Fort Auditorium,
New Delhi, the Council availed the
opportunity and participated in full
strength in this Congress which was
inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister of
Health and Family Welfare Sh. Ghulam
Nabi Azad on 1st December’11.
Sh. Salinda Dissnayake, Hon’ble
Minister of Indigenous Medicine, Govt.
of Sri Lanka was the Guest of Honour.
Other esteemed guests included

Around 2000 delegates, including
170 foreign delegates attended this
Congress representing 33 countries
viz. United Kingdom, United States
of America, France, Germany, Brazil,
Greece, Italy and others.
Hon’ble Union Minister of Health
emphasized that AYUSH systems of
medicine will be involved in National
Health Programmes and Action plan
for 12th Plan period health care of
Govt. of India will also cover the
AYUSH systems.
He also said that a national
commission for Human resources in
AYUSH will be set up to assess the
work study and plan inter-sectoral
coordination. He laid emphasis on

2 nd December’11 Dr. Jaya Gupta,
Asstt. Director (H) made presentation
on ‘A Multicentric clinical trial on
distress during climacteric years’
in the session on Clinical Research.
In continuation of this session
Dr. Praveen Oberai, Asstt. Director
(H), also presented a paper on ‘Acute
Diarrhoeal Diseases in Children- a
CCRH Study’. Two Scientists from the
Council, viz. Dr. V.A. Siddiqui, Asstt.
Director (H), co-chaired the session
on ‘Drug Proving’ and Dr. Bindu
Sharma, Asstt. Director (H) chaired
the session on ‘Female Diseases’ on
2 nd day of the LIGA.
On 2 nd December’11, Dr.
Janardhanan Nair, Asstt. Director
(H), Central Research Institute (H),
Kottayam presented a paper titled
‘Homoeopathic genus epidemicus
‘Bryonia alba’ as a prophylactic
during an outbreak of Viral Fever/
Chikungunya in India – A cluster
randomized double blind placebo
controlled trial’ in the session on
Homoeopathy in epidemics.
Special Interactive session of CCRH
during LIGA Congress
On the Second day of the
Congress, a special Technical session
was organized by the Council on
‘Priority areas in Clinical and
Fundamental Research’. Resource
persons from other countries,
foreign delegates, Scientific Advisory
Committee members of the Council
from Delhi and technical staff of the
Council were invited to share their
scientific inputs in major areas of
homoeopathic research. This special
session was coordinated by Dr. Bindu
Sharma, Asstt. Director (H), CCRH,
New Delhi. The participants were
felicitated with mementoes by CCRH
in this technical session.

The first part of this session was
on ‘Priority Areas in Clinical Research
in Homoeopathy’ which was chaired
by Dr. Alok Kumar, Director General
Incharge, CCRH while Prof. (Dr.)
C. Nayak, former Director General,
CCRH co-chaired the session. The
chairman welcomed the audience
and briefed about the activities
and achievements of the Council.
Dr. Praveen Oberai, Asstt. Director
(H), CCRH, New Delhi made a
presentation about the Priority areas
in which Council has taken up the
Clinical Research studies and pointed
out the issues related to difficulties
and limitations of conducting
research in Homoeopathy. Thereafter,
Dr. Alok Pareek, one of the Founder
Members of LMHI India chapter and
Chairman of Scientific Committee
of LIGA, 2011 suggested to include
homoeopathic research methodology
in the under graduate syllabus and
proposed to simplify the protocols for
clinician. Dr. Clare Relton, Research
Fellow (Public Health), University
of Sheffield, U.K. recommended to
provide fellowships and bursaries
to the homoeopathic scholars and
promote international exchange of
knowledge. She stressed upon the
use of appropriate methodologies
such as use of validated outcome
measures and to design pragmatic
(real world) randomised controlled
trials (RCT). Dr. Robbert van Haselen,
Editor-in-Chief, Complementary
Therapies in Medicine emphasized
that while planning clinical trial,
one should focus on objective rather
than method. It was suggested
that the Council should take up
studies in public health including
pharmacological studies, fundamental
and basic research. Dr. Michael Teut
was of the view that outcome of
research studies should be published
in Complementary and Alternative
Medicine (CAM) journals and
modern medicine journals for wider
dissemination. In this session, Dr. R.
K. Manchanda, Organizing Secretary,
LMHI Congress, 2011 proposed to
take Randomized Control Trials on
preclinical and subclinical conditions

and encouraged publications in peer
reviewed journals and in electronic
form for worldwide dissemination.
Dr. Diwan Harish Chand, an eminent
homoeopath and Chairman, Scientific
Advisory Committee, CCRH thanked
all the speakers for their valued
suggestions.
Prof. C. Nayak, former Director
General, CCRH concluded this session
with his suggestion that CCRH
may take pragmatic multicentre
randomized control trials and trials
where Homoeopathy can be given
as an adjuvant therapy along with
conventional medicine. He added
that research should be taken up in
preclinical areas with the use of LM
potencies, meta analysis of previous
studies and urged Ph.D scholars to
take up research in new areas.
During the second session on
‘Priority Areas in Fundamental
Research’ Dr. Debadatta Nayak,
Research Officer (H), CCRH made a
brief presentation on the status and
limitations of Fundamental / Basic
research in Homoeopathy. Dr. Neeraj
Tandon, Scientist ‘F’, ICMR, New Delhi
who chaired the session recommended
that an integrated multidisciplinary
centrally co-ordinated approach
and employing task force strategy
involving simultaneous advanced
chemical, pharmacological, clinical
pharmacology and toxicological
studies should be done. She further
impressed upon that this should be
coupled with quality control and
standardization studies, regular
monitoring and evaluation, which
will not only lead to accountability
of research but also can provide
a very powerful tool for obtaining
specific information within a defined
time frame. Prof. Sneh Anand, AIIMS,
New Delhi suggested that the study
should be conducted to find out
the efficiency of the homoeopathic
medicine affecting the human body
and to determine its electrical potency
through psychoneuroaxis. Dr. Peter
Fisher, Clinical Director and Director
of Research at the Royal London
Hospital for Integrated Medicine,
London, co-chaired the session and
pointed out that the results of wellestablished
models like ‘Inhibition of

On 3 rd December’11 Dr. Alok
Kumar, Director General Incharge
made a presentation in the session on
Drug Control and Quality Assurance
–II titled as ‘Regulatory Framework of
Homoeopathic Drugs in India’ which
reflected the various provisions for
sale and manufacture of homoeopathic
medicinal preparations under Drugs
and Cosmetics Act 1940 and 1945.
On the same day, an Archives’
meet was held at Dr. D. P. Rastogi Hall
of Siri Fort Auditorium where the
officers involved in the collection of
material for the National museum at
Central Research Institute (H), Noida,
interacted with Dr. R.K. Manchanda
and Michael Teut and noted the
suggestions for making it useful for
the homoeopathic fraternity.
Exhibition of CCRH
A stall, exhibiting the activities
and publications of the Council was
put up for all the four days during
the Congress. On this occasion a
brochure was designed reflecting
the CCRH organization, it’s Units/
Institutes and research activities
and was circulated among the
delegates in the Congress. The priced
and non-priced publications of the
Council were displayed and was the
centre of attraction for attending
delegates. The posters related to
few of the important research
studies, being conducted by CCRH
along with the translites depicting
the common disease conditions and
their preventive aspects were also

displayed at the stall.
The dignitaries and the
professionals who visited the stall
appreciated the work done by the
Council and also praised the method
of dissemination of the outcome of
the research work for the benefit of
the mankind.
All the delegates who visited
the stall, complimented that the
publications were authentic and
worth purchasing. The non-priced
publications which were displayed,

consisted of the handouts related
to description, preventive measures
and frequently used homoeopathic
medicines for common ailments of
children, during pregnancy and some
of the common infectious diseases
prevalent in the country. Many
homoeopathic practitioners and
professionals, attached to various
institutes, showed great interest in
these handouts and complimented
that these are valuable to educate and
motivate the common man for taking
homoeopathic treatment for these
conditions. Some delegates wanted to
develop their own hand bills keeping
these as the model.
The overall projection of the
Council was much appreciated at
LIGA and many professionals from
the other parts of the world wished
to collaborate with CCRH for taking
up research projects.

Overseas homoeopaths who
came to India to participate
in LIGA visited Central Research
Institute (CRI) (H), Noida on 30th November’11. The foreign delegation
was welcomed to the Institute with
flower bouquets and Dr. Sunil Kumar,
Deputy Director (P), Officer Incharge,
CRI, Noida gave brief introduction
about the Institute and its ongoing
research activities and future
projects. The discussions were held
on different subjects and suggestions
were made by the delegates for the
overall promotion and development
of homoeopathic system of medicine.
Most of the delegates put forth some
queries, pertaining to Homoeopathic
Pharmacopoeia, Quality Control
Standardisation of Homoeopathic
drugs and how Homoeopathy is
being practised in India. Technical

programs under taken at the Institute.
The OPD, IPD facilities, ongoing
Drug Standardisation programme
and medicinal plant garden were
appreciated by the delegates. Most of
the delegates expressed their interest
to work in collaboration with CRI (H),

Dr. Diwan Harish Chand,
A Pillar of Homoeopathy, Passes Away
Dr. Diwan Harish Chand
(07.03.1924-13.12.2011)
Dr. Diwan Harish Chand, legendary
homoeopath, a great teacher, a
visionary and a great author passed
away on 13th December’11 at the age
of 87. Dr. Diwan Harish Chand was
guiding lamp to the Council’s activities
since inception. His sudden demise
was a great loss for the Council and
the void will always be a pinch in the
memories of the homoeopaths.
Dr. Diwan Harish Chand was born
on 7th March 1924 in Lahore, Punjab.
He graduated in Medicine in 1945.
He enriched his experience under
late Dr. Diwan Jai Chand, who was
a true Hahnemanian homoeopath.
He worked as a Consultant at Royal
London Homoeopathic Hospital and
Women’s Homoeopathic Hospital,
Philadelphia (U.S.A). He worked with
Dr. Pierre Schmidt, an internationally
acclaimed homoeopath.
Dr. Diwan Harish Chand was
Hony. Physician to the Presidents
of India from 1969 to 1997. He also
served as Vice President of Central
Council of Homoeopathy (CCH) from
1977-91. During this period he laid a
strong foundation of homoeopathic
curriculum in India.
His long association with Central
Council for Research in Homoeopathy
(CCRH) as member of Governing
Body, Chairman of Scientific
Advisory Committee, Special
Committee on Clinical Research,
Drug Proving Committee, Project
Evaluation Committee for Extra Mural
Research Scheme and Homoeopathic
Pharmacopoeia Committee will
always be cherished.
A recipient of more than 20
national and international awards
and numerous honorary diplomas
and fellowships, he became the first
homoeopath to receive the most
prestigious award in medicine – ‘The
Dhanwantari Award’, having been
judged the most outstanding medical
man.
Dr. Diwan Harish Chand
was the first Asian President of
Liga Medicorum Homoeopathica
Internationalis (LMHI) and was
awarded ‘President of Honor’ a
rare title. He was awarded with
Honorary Diploma by LMHI which
was presented by Shri Ghulam Nabi
Azad, Hon’ble Minister of Health
and Family Welfare, Govt. of India at
66 th LMHI Congress at New Delhi in
December’11.
He was Hony. Professor of
Repertory and History of Medicine at
Nehru Homoeopathic Medical College
and Hospital, New Delhi. Considering
his contribution to Homoeopathy
‘Homoeopathic Rattan award’ was
conferred on him by Dr. A.K. Walia,
Hon’ble Minister of Health and
Family Welfare, Govt. of Delhi on 24 th
April’11.
He wrote many books on
Homoeopathy namely, ‘A compendium
of Lectures on Homoeopathy’, Micro
doses Mega results’ (Clinical case
Vol. 1 & Vol. 2), ‘Homoeopathy in
Geriatrics’. He co-edited the books
‘Kent’s Final General Repertory’,
‘Iconography of Hahnemann’,
‘History of Homoeopathy in India in
the 19 th century’, ‘Sir John Weir: a
legend in Homoeopathy’ and ‘History
of Medicine and Contribution of
Hahnemann’.
His contributions to the
development of research in
Homoeopathy through stewardship
of several organizations will remain
unparalleled. His demise is an
irreparable loss not only to the
homoeopathic fraternity but to the
scientific community world over.
He will always be remembered for
his vast contribution in the history,
education, research and future
advances in Homoeopathy.

AContinuing Medical Education
Programme (CME) was organized
by Clinical Research Unit (H),
Agartala from 21st to 22nd October’11
at Pragna Bhawan, Agartala.
Dr. M.S. Ghosh, Asstt. Director (H)
CRU (H), welcomed the dignitaries
and participants to the inaugural
function. The CME was inaugurated
by Sh. Samarjit Bhowmik, I.A.S.,

Health Mission (NRHM), Agartala.
He expressed his willingness to
work in tandem for development of
Homoeopathic system of medicine
in the state of Tripura. The special

The primary objective of the study
was to determine the effectiveness
of homeopathic medicines in the
management of deplorable symptoms
during menopausal period in women.
During this period the variation
in the levels of follicle-stimulating
hormone (FSH) and lipid profile is
measured as secondary objective of
the study. The study was designed
as an open, multicentric, prospective,
observational study to ascertain the
usefulness of homeopathic treatment
in Distress During Climacteric Years
(DDCY). The patients for the study
were enrolled from the outpatient
department of the six Institutes/Units
of Central Council for Research in
Homoeopathy (CCRH). The uniform
questionnaire for assessing major
predefined symptoms of menopause
was adopted, with assessment of
symptoms such as hot flushes,
night sweats, anxiety, palpitation,
depression, insomnia, and so on.
During the one year follow up
of the study, the levels of serum FSH
and lipid profile were monitored
at baseline and at 12th month. The
symptoms of menopause along with

patient to arrive at a similimum, were
repertorized using CARA software.
Each case enrolled in the study was
treated with a single dose as per
the homeopathic principles. The
statistical assessment of the results
was done by Wilcoxon signed rank
test on Statistical Package for Social
Sciences (SPSS). The comparison
of symptom score at entry and
completion of one year of treatment
was assessed and t test was done for
analyzing improvement in laboratory
findings.
The disturbing symptoms like
hot flushes, night sweats, anxiety,
palpitation, depression etc. got
relieved with homeopathic therapy
but there was no significant influence
on serum levels of FSH, high
density lipoprotein and low density
lipoprotein. On the other hand it was
found that serum levels of cholesterol,
triglycerides and very-low-density
lipoprotein decreased significantly.

The feasibility study was done to
detect the effects of two polycrest
homeopathic remedies on human body
by administering through olfactory
route through objective bookmakers
like electroencephalography (EEG).
The volunteers were students from
an introductory Psychology course in
age group of 18-30 years, both sexes.
They were screened for good health
and relatively elevated Sulphur or
Pulsatilla symptom scores on the
Homeopathic Constitutional Type
Questionnaire (CTQ). This study
was double–blind and volunteers
repeatedly sniffed the remedy as
per CTQ type and solvent controls
three times in once-weekly sessions.
Homeopathic remedy was randomly
given in potency – 6C, 12C and 30
C, one potency per week. The sniff
test solutions were diluted just prior
to laboratory sessions (0.5 ml test
solution in 150 ml distilled water).
During each session, remedies and
control solvents were administered
via 2-s sniffs (8 sniffs of each of
4 different succussion levels for
the potency in randomized order).

Primary outcome variable was relative
EEG power (alpha 1 8-10 Hz; alpha 2
10-12 Hz) averaged over 19 electrode
sites, including all succussions for a
given potency. For both alpha bands
gender, baseline resting EEG, alpha
and solvent were controlled and

for Research in Indian Medicine and
Homoeopathy. Initially he was posted
at Delhi, and in 1974 he was posted
at Regional Research Institute (RRI)
(H), Kottayam where he strengthened
it to Central Research Institute (CRI)
(H) Kottayam. As AD (Admn.), CCRH
he took an upper hand in completing
the mission of constructing infrastructure
for CRI (H), Kottayam, CRI
(H), Noida, RRI (H), Puri and RRI
