appropriate surrogate end points
and bio-markers need to be
identified and adopted. Also, for the
homoeopathic trials, Biomarkers
might be used not to test individual
drug action, but to test the
felt that the bio-markers identified
sensitivity for the disease(s) under
consideration, so that the end results
of the studies with identified
biomarkers would be more
meaningful and would have greater
The need of identifying the biomarkers
The following officers of the
Council were also present:
1. Dr. Anil Khurana, Assistant
Director, CCRH
2. Dr. Divya Taneja,
Consultant (H), CCRH
3. Dr. Mukta, Consultant (H),
CCRH
After Dr. Khurana had
introduced the experts to the WHO
Project, Dr. Taneja apprised the
members of the background of the
WHO project and Dr. Mukta
elaborated on the database format
conceived by the Council. Following
an extensive discussion on the utility,
format and layout of the database,
following decisions were undertaken:
1. Since the work of preparation of
database of homoeopathic
publication is extensive and a
continuous work, it may be done
phasewise. Phase I of the
database preparation work may
be done in 3 months to be
submitted to the WHO. The
work to be done in subsequent
phases may be taken up by the
Council in long term. In first
phase, ‘Bibliographical
The work of preparation of
database of homoeopathic
publication will be done
phasewise.
24 Vol.No. 47 July - September, 2008
Database’ may be prepared.
Initially, all the volumes of the
following homoeopathic journals
available in the Council’s library
are to be indexed:
a. CCRH Quarterly Bulletin
b. Indian Journal for Research
in Homoeopathy
c. Homoeopathy (previously
known as British
Homoeopathic Journal)
d. National Journal of
Homoeopathy
e. Homeo Links
2. There are well-defined rules,
format and standards, which
need to be followed from the
very beginning of the database
preparation. This is needed to
handover the work to specific
database agencies, if required, or
when some data is to be
imported from any agency.
Thus, to improve operability and
encourage information
exchange, internationally
accepted policy issues of
database are to be followed.
3. Internationally-accepted
medical database, ‘Medline’,
should be picked up as the
standard reference source and
applied to the proposed
Homoeopathic Database. Future
takeover or carry over of task
and information exchange would
be possible only on the basis of
the standard followed.
Standards must be adopted in all
aspects, for example, Journal
Name, Author Name and
Information, Keywords,
Indexing, Formats etc.
4. Software ‘WINISIS’ from
UNESCO may be used as the
computer programme for
database formation.
5. For preparation of keywords, the
following terms should be used:
a. MESH for basic medical and
scientific terms.
b. Homoeopathy thesaurus
from European Commission
for Homoeopathy for
homoeopathic terms.
6. Simultaneously, the Council
should draft the policy
documents of database
presentation identifying the
following:
a. Standards to be followed
b. Sources to be identified
c. Criteria for selection of
sources
d. Material acquisition policy
e. Presentation formats to be
made available
f. Offline and online
presentation
g. Creation of institutional
repository
h. Creation of author
repository
i. Creation of Database
Editing Committee and Web
Management Committee.
7. NIC may be requested to provide
policy document adopted by
them for preparation of Indian
Medical Database ‘IndMed’.
8. In the database, ample scope is
to be kept for expansion, in
terms of number of entries and
also for indexed data, including
addition of abstracts, citations,
full text and reviews at later
stages.
9. In the second phase, all
Journals, Technical Reports,
Seminar Proceedings and Theses
available at CCRH library are to
be included.
Council has also received the
technical manual of the IndMED
database from the National
Informatics Centre, Delhi. A
technical manual for preparation of
Homoeopathic Database is under
progress, which will help to create a
database of homoeopathic
publications.

physicians at the Primary Health
Centres and in various dispensaries
would find this Handbook useful. It
can also be used for CME
programme for the homoeopathic
physicians and ROTP for teachers of
homoeopathic colleges.
Dr. Radha Maheshwari discussed the
strategies of collaboration and the
studies which could be taken up in
future. The topics like various
aspects of homoeopathic research,
particularly the fundamental and
basic research, animal research
models and immunological and
genomic research were also
discussed extensively. Dr. Radha
Maheshwari suggested the reverse
the drugs with clinical efficacy are
tested on animal disease models
under controlled settings. The
assessment of clinical responses in
animals is then followed by
assessment of histological response,
and further analysed by molecular
responses through immunological
and genomic studies at cellular level.
This, he opined, would result in
evidence-based research on clinical
efficacy of homoeopathic medicines.
It was also suggested that in-vitro
studies may not be taken in the first
stage for undetectable level of
molecules in the ultra high
homoeopathic potencies. The group
decided to take up intra-mural
research studies initially. The
proposed future research areas like
Malaria, Depression, Wound
Healing, Impaired Wound Healing,
Neuropathic Pain, Brain Concussion,
Stroke, Diabetes Mellitus, Trauma,
